Chianti Rufina: The 2009 Vino D'Annata, the 2008 Riserva &... Burgundy

The 2010 chianti Rufina presentation began with what many might consider a risky comparison: six 2007 Chianti Rufina wines (5 Riserva, and one not), and six 2007 Burgundies. Six good Burgundies, and those who say that a good Burgundy is the finest wine in the world would likely have expected the comparison to be rather pointless, a "best and the rest" sort of situation. But it wasn't; rather, we enjoyed a view of two very different areas with very different winemaking traditions.

Burgundy has always been sought after by the nobility, who over the centuries went to extreme lengths to get hold of the region's wine, and from early on took steps to promote quality and differentiate from place to place within the region.

Chianti Rufina, on the other hand, was recognized as a wine producing region of quality by Cosimo III de'Medici in the early 1700s, but was never the subject of systematic attempts to improve the wines, and one of the ways that the differences between the two appellations shows most strongly is vineyard age: The wines from Burgundy that we tasted were from vineyards that were at least 40 years old, and in some cases much older, up to 80.

The Montesodi vineyard, which yields the Frescoobaldi Cru that was among the Rufina wines, was instead planted a mere 15 years ago because the last time the vineyard had been replanted before then it had been planted to lower densities, with vines that produced more quantity than quality. The situation is similar over much of Rufina; the wines are almost all from relatively young vineyards planted to rectify poor decisions of the past, and this neatly reveals the primary viticultural difference between the two regions: Burgundy has been farmed for quality for centuries, whereas Rufina (like much of the rest of Italy) has only recently begun to emphasize quality over quantity. In short, the Italians are playing catch-up. But doing so very well, as the tasting showed.

The other obvious difference the tasting revealed was in varietals; Burgundy is exclusively Pinot Noir and is universally considered to provide the finest expression of Pinot Noir bar none. Rufina is instead home to the classic Tuscan Sangiovese blend, which revolves around Sangiovese (a varietal that does display some tannic affinities with Pinot Noir) with uve complementari, or supporting varietals that include the autochthonous Canaiolo and Colorino, and also can include international varietals, especially the Cabernets and Merlot.

How do they compare? Not particularly well. Pinot Noir, especially in its Burgundy expression, revolves primarily around finesse; it's an essential wine that would be too much were one to add a jot, and not enough were one to remove one. In other words, it's a balancing act, suspended high above the ground. Sangiovese and its allies in Rufina work in a different direction, displaying finesse, but also power, and playing off a balance between fruit, acidity and tannin that is very different from what Pinot does, but not necessarily inferior. If one were to borrow from the musical world, Burgundy grabs an instrument and plays a solo (for some reason the clarinet comes to mind), whereas Rufina gathers a group of instruments and plays a concerto. Very different expressions, but both can be sublime.

A couple of words on the vintage:
For Chianti Rufina 2007 was good, though unusual at the outset, with an early spring followed by a long, hot, but not too dry summer. I found the resulting wines to be rather nervous upon release, but they have developed quite nicely, with rich fruit supported by lively acidities and tannins, and think they have nice aging potentials as well.

In Burgundy, we were told, things didn't go as well: the spring came early, but the summer was cool and rather damp, and the resulting vintage was "difficult;" a fellow taster with much more experience with Burgundy than I have said it was a vintage of comparatively low acidity, adding that higher acidity vintages are better. Of course difficult is not disastrous and indeed the vintage offered, we were told, an opportunity for top winemakers to draw the most from their lands, and achieve the sort of deftness and finesse that don't come in richer vintages. In other words, difficult can be good (even with lower acidities), and indeed the Burgundies we tasted were very good.

As were the Chianti Rufinas. We began with them:

Tenuta Bossi - Marchesi Gondi Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
Deep black almandine ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and flinty, on the outset, with cherry notes and some jammy accents and some mineral acidity that emerge with time, and also hints of smoke. Quite mineral, and rather distant; it's not closed but not welcoming either. Keeps its distance and displays considerable reserve. On the palate it's ample, with fairly bright cherry fruit supported by lively acidity and by distinct minerality, and is supported by tannins that have a fairly intense burr, and flow into a rather bitter finish with soft cherry underpinning and fair acidity. It's a bit awkward, fresh from the bottle, but as it opens in the glass develops nicely in a decidedly traditional key, with acidity carrying nicely. It impressed me, considerably, because though my first impression was so-so, when I resipped it it made me open my eyes and take notice
2 stars

Frascole Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
This is from the highest vineyard in Rufina, at 500 m ASL. Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim with hints of almandine as well. The bouquet is powerful, and rather dusky, with red berry fruit supported by considerable underbrush and some spice, and also savory balsamic notes and sea salt, and hints of petroleum that are a little unusual in a red wine but work well. On the palate it's full and rich, with powerful brambly cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and a fair amount of warmth, and by steely greenish tannins that are still quite young, but have begun to smooth, and flow into a long decidedly bitter finish. It's very young, and needs time, and the bitterness plays a fundamental role in the wine; it will always be there, and if you like bitterness in a wine you will like the wine. If you prefer wines that are more welcoming and fruity -- the bitterness is standoffish -- it will work less well for you. It will in any case be quite long lived, and really isn't ready to be drunk yet -- I would give it another 2-3 years before opening it.
2 stars

I Veroni Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
Lively black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and quite mineral, with brambly accents and bitterness more than fruit; it has a certain distance to it at first swish, though with more swishing some berry fruit and wet tree bark emerge. Quite young. On the palate it's bright, and tightly woven, with fairly rich very mineral berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that are clean and bitter, with pencil shaving and graphite overtones, and flow into a clean rather bitter finish. Pleasant, in a decidedly mineral key, and if you like the style, which is well removed from the fruity fullness of a ripe Merlot, you will enjoy it considerably. A pleasant discovery, and it will drink very well with grilled or roasted meats.
88-90

Lavacchio Cedro Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections. The b is young and quite oaky, with considerable sweetish cedar overlying cherry ft; the combination is harmonious, but not as well defined as it might have been with less oak. On the palate it's ample and fairly rich, with cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that have a sweet vanilla laced burr and flow into a clean rather bitter finish in which vanilla again emerges rather strongly. It's heavily oaked, and is quite good in that style, but you have to like it. I found the oak a bit much for my tastes.
2 stars

Marchesi De' Frescobaldi Montesodi Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and quite ripe, with savory notes mingled with slightly stewed berry fruit that has some prune overlay, and some minerality and some wet leather as well. It gives an impression of being in mid stride. On the palate it's further along and quite rich, with powerful ripe cherry prune fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that are quite smooth, though they have a slight burr to them, and flow into a clean fairly rich cherry finish. It's quite pleasant and eminently approachable, with deft acidity keeping it light on its toes, and it will drink very well with roasts or stews now, and also age nicely for quite some time. Very pleasant, and if you like the style, which is middle-of-the-road in an approachable key, you will enjoy it. It doesn't quite give a come-hither look, but almost.
2 stars

Selvapiana Bucerchiale Chianti Rufina Riserva 2007
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is elegant, with rich cherry fruit supported by some minerality and deft floral accents. Very pleasant, and displays great finesse. On the palate it's rich, with clean mineral-laced cherry fruit supported by slightly brambly mineral acidity and by tannins that are quite smooth and flow into a clean bright berry fruit finish with tannic underpinning. Quite harmonious, and though it's quick to write there's a lot going on. It's quite young, but drinkable, and will work nicely with grilled meats or roasts if you lack the patience to give it time. If you do, it will richly reward you. Expect it to age 10-15 years at least.

Burgundy:

Givry Domaine de la Ferté 2007 baron Thenard/Domaines Deviliard
Pale almandine with hints of orange in the rim. The bouquet is elegant, and quite rich, with powerful floral notes, with strawberry and cherry fruit supported by a certain sweetness - almost pastry shop - and spice. Quite graceful in a rich and rather voluptuous key. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour strawberry cherry fruit supported by lively acidity and a degree of sweetness, and by graceful, deft tannins that flow into a clean fairly tart finish that continues at length. It's quite fresh, and quite young, and will also age nicely though one could certainly drink it now.
2 stars

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuéès 2007 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
Pale almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up slightly candied fruit and some jammy accents with a fair amount of greenish spice. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly bright sour cherry fruit supported by lively berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are delicate and savory, with a slight burr, and flow into a clean fairly bright tannic finish. Pleasant, and quite deft; it's also quite young, and the nose is somewhat behind the palate, while the tannins are fairly strong, and emerge over the fruit. It's a wine that comes across as slightly thin, but I would expect it to do very interesting things with time because its minerality and acidity are both quite nice. .
2 stars

Volnay 1er Cru La Carelle Sous La Chapelle 2007 Jean-Marc Boillot
Slightly darker pale almandine ruby. The nose is powerful, and by comparison with the first two a bit rustic, with intense balsamic notes, sea salt and lathered horse, and also savory warmth. A lot going on in what I would call a traditional key were it Italian, and pleasant if you like the style. On the palate it's rich, with powerful cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and tannins that are quite young and rather glancing--steely even, flowing into a decidedly mineral finish with some brambly accents and underlying bitter acidity. Quite pleasant, and very fresh, and if you like the style you will enjoy it very much; it's a deft wine that has a willowy quality to it, and will do interesting things as it ages.
90

Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollières 2007 Jean-Marc Boillot
Cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with decidedly savory berry fruit laced with some minerality, balsamic accents, and wet leaves, with hints of scalded milk as well. On the palate it's medium bodied and graceful, with bright sour cherry fruit supported by strawberry acidity and tannins that have a deft burr and flow into a clean bright sour berry fruit finish with lasting warmth and savory notes. Quite fresh, and will drink very well with red meats.
88-90

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cherbandes 2007 Domaine Louis Boillot & Fils
Fairly pale cherry ruby with black reflections and hints of almandine in the rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cherry strawberry fruit supported by sweetish balsamic accents, and by some leather as well; it takes longer to open than some of the others, but displays considerable finesse with time. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by bitterness and spice, and considerable minerality; it flows into a clean rather savory finish with some spicy berry fruit underpinning. It needs, perhaps more than the others, more time to develop.
2 stars

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru aux Perdrix 2007 Domaine des Perdix
Fairly rich cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is elegant, with rich violets and floral accents, and by red berry fruit, and some brambly notes as well. Very pleasant to sniff, and quite harmonious. On the palate it's ample, with rich cherry fruit laced with strawberry notes and supported by deft acidity and minerality, while the tannins are quite smooth and flow into a clean slightly bitter berry fruit laced finish. Though young the wine is quite approachable and very pleasant to drink. Very nice and though one could drink it now it will reward those who have the patience to give it time. It will age beautifully for many, many years.

The next day we moved to the seat of the Chianti Rufina Consorzio in Villa Poggio Reale, an elegant Renaissance villa overlooking the town of Rufina, and tasted through the current vintages, both the 2009 Vino D'Annata and the 2008 Riserva. I confess I am still getting a feel for the 2009; it strikes me as being a bit inconsistent, with some very fine wines and others that don't quite reach the same heights, and is a wine in which the hand of the winemaker plays an important role. Climate did play a role in this, because July was quite hot, and in some areas stressed the vines.

2008? Last year I said it was good but slightly inferior to 2007, and I still have that impression; it's a solid vintage, and one that yielded some excellent wines. I would rather not say much more yet, because the wines we tasted were very young -- in bottle, but not released -- and though I did score them in many cases I felt like I was judging toddlers.

As was the case last year the wines were presented palese, or uncovered, and I have listed them in the order in which they appear in the Consorzio's catalog.

Colognole

Colognole Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. Fresh bouquet, with lively brambly berry fruit supported by fairly bright cherry acidity and some graphite shaving bitterness. Quite fresh. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that have a brambly burr and flow into a fairly long bitter finish. Quite approachable in a food oriented key; the tannins are a little too dry for one to drink it by the glass, but it will work very well with simple grilled meats or light roasts. A food wine.
2 stars

Colognole Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Black almandine ruby with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with berry fruit supported by some greenish accents and moderate spice with hints of cedar as well. Fairly direct. On the palate it's ample, with moderately intense sour cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that are warm and rather splintery. It's very young, and still coming together; it needs at least a year and perhaps more. Judging it now is like judging an unhappy toddler.

Frascole

Frascole Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively pale ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is rich, with powerful cherry and forest berry fruit supported by pleasing vegetal accents and deft sour berry fruit acidity; it's quite fresh and quite refreshing, a wine that invites repeated sniffs. On the palate it's rich, and medium bodied, with full powerful cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fresh berry fruit finish with slight bitter underpinning. Graceful, and will drink very well with foods, will also age nicely for 5-8 years or more. Worth seeking out.

Frascole Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black almandine ruby. The bouquet is quite elegant, with deft minerality and berry fruit mingled with bitter accents and some intriguing vegetal notes. Great finesse. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with rich cherry plum fruit supported by mineral acidity and smooth sweet tannins that have some graphite shaving bitterness and a tantalizing languidity to them, and flow into a clean deft cherry plum finish. Quite pleasant, though young, and revolves more around finesse than power, though it has that too. Worth seeking out to drink with a roast (rare roast beef thickly sliced would be nice) or stew, and will also age nicely for a decade or more.
88-90

Azienda Agricola Il Prato

Azienda Agricola Il Prato Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with some cherry fruit and spice mingled with slight peppery accents and hints of vanilla. On the palate it's medium bodied, with moderately intense rather sour fruit supported by tannins that have a warm burr, and flow into a rather dusky finish. It's fairly direct, and is the sort of wine one sets out on the table and drinks while enjoying the food; it will support what it's served -- simple grilled meats, light stews, meat-based pasta dishes, beany dishes -- with but doesn't demand the limelight.

Villa Travignoli

Villa Travignoli Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fresh, with fairly rich cherry fruit that has slight candied accents supported by violets and some acidity, with vegetal accents too. Bracing in a very youthful key. On the palate it's fresh, and fairly light, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and by tannins that gain depth from a slight burr, and flow into a clean fresh berry fruit finish. A pleasant food wine that will do a very fine job accompanying hearty soups such as ribollita, rich dishes such as fagioli all'uccelletto (or a meaty lasagna) and also quickly grilled meats. Expect it to go quickly.
2 stars

Travignoli Tegolaia Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Livley black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cedar and some brambly vegetal notes, but not much in the way of fruit, and it gives an impression of dryness. On the palate it's medium bodied with moderately intense cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that have a brambly glancing burr and flow into a clean rather savory finish. It's approachable, and direct, and will drink well with foods, in particular simple grilled meats. It's just that I would expect a little more richness and direction of a Riserva.
1 star

Azienda Agricola Le Coste

Azienda Agricola Le Coste Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Deep pyrope ruby with cherry ruby rim; it's almost poured ink. The bouquet is fairly intense, with a vegetal laced spice supporting moderate cherry plum fruit with hints of butterscotch as well. The palate is defter than I expected, and rather light, with fairly sweet, bright cherry plum fruit supported by moderate mineral acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a savory finish with some graphite shaving bitterness. It's quite direct, but has a pleasant cheekiness to it, and will drink well with red sauced pasta dishes, simple grilled meats, and similar. You may wonder where the bottle went.
1 star

Le Coste Grati Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet powerful and decidedly green; it brings to mind a cut pumpkin, and there is also some warmth and alcohol. On the palate it's ample, with moderately intense sour cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit and savory accents, and by fairly smooth tannins that flow into a rather dry tart finish. It's quite particular, especially the nose, and is therefore a wine you should only consider if you like the style.
1 star

Montulico - Cantina Sociale VI.C.A.S.

Montulico Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Deep cherry ruby with black reflections and purple rim. The bouquet is quite fresh, with rather voluptuous dusky cherry fruit supported by some smoky notes and jammy acidity, with a slight vegetal underpinning. A cheeky wine. On the palate it's a touch sweeter than I expected and very fresh, with clean rich sour cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fresh cherry finish that gains depth from acidity and slight peppery accents from the tannins. Quite pleasant in a young, smooth, cheeky fruit driven key, and also quite direct; it's very approachable and if you like fruity lively wines -- there's nothing studied or polished about it, rather it brings to mind a kid twirling on a meadow -- you will enjoy it, and it will work quite well with simple grilled meats or light stews and such. Worth seeking out. If you like the style.
2 stars

Dreolino

Dreolino Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Deep pigeon blood ruby with black reflections and purple rim. The bouquet is closed, with some mineral accents and some savory notes, coupled with hints of sour cherry that I would have liked stronger. On the palate it's fairly bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by sour mineral acidity and by tannins that are rather brambly and become dry in the finish, which also has sour cherries and some savory accents. To be frank, I would have liked more, especially on the nose, which has a stunted feel to it, and I think I would give it a year more in the hopes that the nose will evolve. The score reflects the present.
1 star

Fattoria Di Basciano

Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cherry fruit supported by considerable savory cedar and some spice; it's a bit disjointed and coming together, in a fairly promising international key. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly bright slightly greenish cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have a warm savory burr, and a bitter underpinning as well that flows into a savory tannic finish. It's a bit disjointed, with the tannic structure feeling larger than the fruit it was built to surround, and as a consequence there is a degree of emptiness to it; I would have liked more fruit.
1 star

Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep pyrope ruby with purple rim. The bouquet is intense, with berry fruit laced with a fair amount of savory cedar and some spice; it's quite young, and needs another year to come together. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich prune fruit supported by moderate mineral acidity and by tannins that start out quite smooth, but then reveal a splintery cedar-laced burr that continues into a fairly dry finish with a slight bitter underpinning. It's still quite young and rather out of sorts; it needs a year for the tannins to begin to smooth, and then will be approachable in a ripe fruit driven fairly international key. If you like the style you will enjoy it, but if you instead prefer more traditional, tarter, more aggressive Sangiovese, you will find it soft.
1 star

Fattoria di Grignano

Fattoria di Grignano Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections.. The bouquet is fairly rich, with cherry fruit supported by brambles and some vegetal accents; it's a bit green. On the palate it's rather aggressive, with greenish berry fruit supported by greenish acidity and by tannins that have a peppery burr and flow into a fairly bright peppery finish. It's a bit on the angry side, and if you like this rather aggressive style you will like it, but you have to like more aggressive wines. In terms of accompaniments, it will work well with succulent grilled meats or roasts, including fattier fare such as spare ribs or leg of lamb. Particular, and you will either like it or not.
1 star

Fattoria di Grignano Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry with black reflections. the bouquet is powerful, with a great deal of cedar that overshadows fruit and most everything else. Oak in a glass. On the palate it's brighter than one might have expected on the outset, with berry fruit that has an unexpected sour component that manages to emerge, before being pulled back under by a cedary hand that continues into a decidedly cedar laced finish. A great lot of oak, and it's a pity, because there is fruit under it. Just that it doesn't manage to emerge.

Fattoria I Veroni

Fattoria I Veroni Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and rather smoky, with some balsamic notes as well mingled into berry fruit. It's a bit rustic and not quite as clean as I might have liked. On the palate it's quite direct, with moderately intense cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do display a slight peppery burr. It will drink well with foods, not distracting from what it's served with, and because of the tannic burr will be best with more succulent quikly grilled meats or light stews.
1 star

Fattoria I Veroni Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep pyrope with cherry rim -- close to being impenetrable. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit laced with a fair amount of cedar and some savory accents as well and a fair amount of alcoholic warmth. Fairly young, and still digesting the oak it went through, though as it opens fruit gains in intensity. On the palate it's fairly full, with moderately rich berry fruit supported by moderate sour berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that have a warm cedary burr and flow into a fairly hot, rather dry finish. There's a lot of oak, and the wine is trying to digest it but hasn't yet. Because of the peppery aggressiveness of the tannins, it will drink well with fattier roasts or stews. It needs time, a year at least, and isn't showing as well as it will.
1 star

Fattoria il Capitano - Azienda Agricola Balbi

Fattoria il Capitano Chianti Rufina DOCG 2008
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is a bit rustic, with savory balsamic notes and hints of wet horse, supported by some bramble and slight acidity, with mineral and underbrush undertones. On the palate it's moderately intense, with fairly bright sour cherry fruit supported by brambly acidity and very dry tannins that flow into a decidedly tannic finish that is rather dry. It's a bit dry, and a bit tannic, and also quite aggressive; if you like the style it will work quite well with fatty grilled meats, or mixed fried meats and vegetables, but you have to like the style. If you prefer smoother softer wines it won't work for you at all.
1 star

Fattoria il Capitano Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with sour cherry fruit supported by some dried orange peel acidity and some spice, though not too much. On the palate it's light, with bright cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, and flow into a sour cherry finish with tannic underpinning. Pleasant in a light, rather cheeky -- saucy, even -- sort of way; it will drink well with quickly grilled meats, red sauced pasta dishes, and also has the acidity necessary to work well with fried meats and vegetables. If you like more studied concentrated wines it won't work for you, but if you like the style it is pleasant and will go quickly.
2 stars

Fattoria il Lago

Fattoria il Lago Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fresh, with lively cherry fruit supported by violets and some sour berry cherry jam acidity that gains depth from slight vegetal accents. Bracing and fresh. On the palate it's light, with less acidity than I expected; the fruit is fresh sour cherry while the acidity is moderate, and the tannins are fairly smooth, with bitter undertones that carry into the finish. It's quite direct, and will accompany what it's served with without getting in the way.
1 star

Fattoria il Lago Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is dusky, with cherry fruit supported by cedar and some leathery accents, and also by some iodine and as it opens plum fruit as well, with underlying mint and spice. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins and moderately intense acidity, while there is also quite a bit of alcohol, which contributes to the sweetness that emerges on the palate, while the finish is fairly long, with cherry plum fruit. It's pleasant though very young, and needs another couple of years to get its bearings; at present it's a toddler stumbling, but it shows promise.
1 star

Fattoria Lavacchio

Fattoria Lavacchio Cedro Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is a bit disjointed, with smoky balsamic accents mingled with red berry fruit and savory notes that gain in intensity as it opens; it also becomes more harmonious. On the palate it's medium bodied, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by minerality more than acidity, and by tannins that have a distinctly bitter component to them. It's more settled than I might have liked because it's lacking in acidity.
1 star

Fattoria Lavacchio Cedro Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Impenetrable pyrope with black cherry rim. Poured ink. The bouquet is charged, with a tremendous rush of hardwood ash and cedar with some savory accents and spice, but not much fruit -- it is likely there, but is completely overshadowed by the oak. The palate reflects the nose; it's quite powerful, with bitter savory oak that overshadows most everything else at the outset, and flows into a somewhat sweeter vanilla laced cedary finish in the end, more oak that continues to emerge. In its defense the wine is very, very young, but it still has a lot of oak it needs to digest. One judges what one has in front of one.

Fattoria Selvapiana

Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Pale cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with dusky berry fruit supported by savory notes and sea salt, and by pleasant herbal notes, while there is also a fair amount of alcohol. On the palate it's fresh, and deft, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that a warm savory burr and flow into a clean rather mineral finish. It's very young, and needs another year to get its bearings, but is quite pleasant, and will be worth waiting for.

Marchesi Gondi - Tenuta Bossi

Marchesi Gondi San Giuliano Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is rich and fresh in a rather haunting way, with powerful jammy cherry fruit supported by dusky cherry acidity and a fair amount of alcohol; for some reason the bouquet makes me think of a voluptuous femme fatale. The palate is rich, but not as turgid as I might have hoped; there's fairly rich cherry fruit whose sweetness is tempered by savory notes, and there are pleasant smooth tannins, but there isn't quite as much acidity as I might have liked, and this makes it a tad settled. It will work quite well with foods, however, supporting what it's served with, without hogging the limelight.
2 stars

Marchesi Gondi Pian dei Sorbi Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
impenetrable pigeon blood ruby with cherry rim. Poured ink. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some spice mingled with berry fruit and slight cedar with some menthol and warmth, and quite a bit of alcohol as well. It's in mid stride and moving. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity that confers brightness, and is balanced by dusky bitterness from the tannins that are smooth, fading into a fruit finish that gradually settles into black coffee bitterness. It's going in several directions at once, and though the aggregate total is quite promising the pieces are still circling each other warily and wondering how they'll all fit in. I would give it 2-3 years to get its act together, and expect it to age well for a decade at least. It will improve with respect to the present.

Podere Il Pozzo - Cantine F.lli Bellini

Il Pozzo Chianti Rufina DOCG 2009
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with sour leathery berry fruit notes and some vegetal accents, it gives an impression of tartness. On the palate it's ample, with moderately intense sour berry fruit supported by tannins that have a peppery burr to them, and by moderately intense sour cherry acidity. It's a bit rustic, and rather particular, and you'll only like it if you like this style. If you prefer smoother more fruit driven wines, it won't work as well for you.
1 star

Podere il Pozzo Il Pozzo Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep pyrope ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some cedar and fairly deft spice, supported by moderate spicy berry fruit. On the palate it's brighter than the nose would suggest, with fairly rich tart cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a dusky graphite shaving burr and considerable warmth, and flow into a tart decidedly tannic -- almost tongue-curling -- finish. It's in the throws of youth, and will be there for a couple of years, after which it will be pleasant in a fairly international key -- I think, because it does need time, both for the nose to catch up to the palate and match stride with it, and for the palate to develop. At present it's a work in progress.

Cantine F.lli Bellini Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by some bitter graphite shavings. Pleasant to sniff, and still quite young. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly bright cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean slightly greenish finish. Pleasant in a rather cheeky way, and will drink nicely with stews or roasts now, and also age well for a decade at least.
2 stars

Castello di Nipozzano - Marchesi De'Frescobaldi

Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is powerful, with a fair amount of cedar mingled with cherry fruit and some spice; it's deft, but also quite young, and a work in progress; at present the oak overshadows fruit to a degree. On the palate it's ample, and rather dusky, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and rather dusky tannins; it has a slightly dilute feel to it that I didn't expect, and the fruit seems to run away in all directions, like rivulets, and this is because of a certain shortness that resolves into bitter splintery tannins. It's a work in progress caught in a bad moment, and to give it the score now would be like grading a toddler in the throws of a temper tantrum.

Vigneto Montesodi Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cherry fruit supported by a fair amount of cedar and some berry fruit acidity; it's nicely balanced in a fairly rich rather international key. On the palate it's ample, with rich rather dusky cherry fruit supported by deft dusky berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, but do have a dusky cedar-laced burr, and flow into a clean rather bitter finish. It's still very young, and needs another year to digest the oak, but promises well; it will work well with grilled meats or roasts, and also age nicely for a decade at least. But do give it time.
2 stars

Castello del Trebbio

Castello del Trebbio Lastricato Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2008
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is deft, with elegant red berry - prune fruit supported by violets and slight alcohol with pleasant spice as well. On the palate it's full, with rich cherry plum fruit that gains depth from savory duskiness and tantalizing plum acidity that gradually emerges, and continues into the finish, while the tannins are quite smooth and quite deft. A very pleasant wine that will drink well with roasts or stews, and may also distract you from matters at hand; it's like a pretty girl who dresses simply and is quiet, but attracts attention simplyt by being there.

Ribolla Gialla: A Quick Overview

Ribolla Gialla has long been grown in Friuli Venezia Giulia -- documents dating to the XII century mention Ribolla del Collio, and Vitigni Italiani quotes one scholar who suspects it may in fact be Avola, a varietal introduced to the region by the Romans. It was (and is) widely planted in the Colli Orientali and Collio areas of the Province of Udine, as well as around Gorizia and into Slovenia, and in the 1800s, when Friuli Venezia Giulia was a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sweet wines made from Ribolla Gialla were in great demand at Court.

I didn't encounter any sweet wines made with Ribolla when I tasted through Ribolla at Vinitaly this year -- the wines were all dry, and almost universally pleasingly fresh, which is a characteristic of the grape that leads to its being used in blends with both Tocai Friulano (now Friulano) and Malvasia, as well as in purezza. What I did encounter, in addition to still wines, was sparkling Ribolla, which can be quite pleasant, in a softer, less acidic key than one encounters with sparkling wines made from Chardonnay or the Pinots.

The wines, in the order tasted:

Paolo Venturini

Paolo Venturini Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy white. The bouquet is fresh, with rich floral accents mingled with honeydew melon and hints of pungency. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderate slightly greenish apricot fruit laced with honeydew melon and supported by moderate acidity. It's fairly direct, and will drink nicely as an aperitif, with simple fish or cheese based antipasti, and also with simple white meats or light fish dishes.
1 star

Humar

Humar Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Brassy yellow with slight greenish highlights. The bouquet is moderately intense, with white berry fruit and some floral accents supported by moderate pungency. On the palate it's ample and rather soft, with honeydew melon supported by moderate loquat acidity that flows into a delicate sweetish honeydew melon finish. It's simple and straight forward in a soft rather languid key, and will drink nicely as an aperitif.
1 star

Borgo Conventi

Borgo Conventi Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with white rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brought up some minerality and hints of honeydew melon . On the palate it's a bit more mineral, and with more acidity; it has mineral-laced apricot - honeydew melon fruit supported by warm acidity that flows into a clean fairly tart savory acidic finish. Pleasant and when the nose catches up to the palate (fall 2010) it will be enjoyable; by comparison with many it has more direction and acidity, and will drink better with foods, e.g. fish-based risotto or pasta dishes.
2 stars

Blazic

Blazic Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Brassy white with brassy reflections. The bouquet is fairly tart, with minerality and some green apricot mingled with slight heather and sage. On the palate it's ample and softer than I expected from the nose, with minerality supported by languid glycerin and slight acidity that flow into a clean soft finish. It will work nicely as an aperitif or with delicately flavored fish.
1 star

Pighin

Pighin Ribolla Gialla Collio 2009
Pale brassy yellow iw brilliant brassy reflections. Pleasant bouquet with delicate floral accents mingled with some savory notes and light spice, On the palate it's bright, with fresh lemony loquat fruit supported by clean citric acidity that flows into a fairly long citric-mineral finish with hints of sage. Pleasant, and though light is agile and blessed with good direction. It will drink well as an aperitif with fish, or cheese, or cold cuts, and will also be nice with risotti, vegetable or fish pasta sauces, and stewed or grilled fish. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Muzic

Muzic Ribolla Gialla DOC 2008
Brassy gold with brassy reflections. the bouquet is fairly intense, with gunflint and bitter accents mingled with spice and some alcohol. Clearly more mature than the other wines, and this is due to its greater age. On the palate it's fairly rich, in a languid key with warm slightly savory loquat fruit supported by loquat acidity that flows into a fairly long loquat finish with a sweetish underpinning. Pleasant, and will work nicely as an aperitif or with cheese or egg based antipasti, simple fish, and because of the sweetish underpinning, with moderately spiced Chinese dishes, say of the Cantonese school.
2 stars

Gradnik

Gradnik Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2007
Pale brassy gold with slightly greenish highlights. The bouquet is fairly intense, with considerable pungency and white pear; the pungency brings wet ash to mind and is rather pleasant, On the palate it's ample and soft, with fairly intense minerality that gains zest from white pepper and a degree of languidity from slight sweetness, and flows into a clean mineral finish in which sweetness gradually steps aside for bitterness. It's fairly direct, and will drink well as an aperitif, though the minerality and bitter final accents will go nicely with fish too. As it opens the pungency and ash fade, giving way to honeydew melon, while the palate becomes more languid. It's a softer expression, and this is in part its age.
2 stars

Primosic

Primosic Ribolla di Oslavia Riserva Collio DOC 2007
Lively brassy gold with brilliant greenish brassy highlights and white rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with some caramel and butterscotch mingled with minerality and some honeydew melon. On the palate it's ample and languid, with moderately intense minerality supported by slight honeysuckle and warm delicate loquat warmth more than acidity, which flows into a fairly long warm mineral finish. The delicate loquat warmth is intriguing, and invites reflection; it grew upon me and I would be tempted to serve it as an aperitif or with delicate fish dishes. Or cold cuts, in particular cooked hams.
2 stars

Colli di Poianis

Colli di Poianis Vigna dei Zuccoli Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2009

Pale brassy yellow with brassy greenish reflections. The bouquet is intense and herbal, with sage mingled with loquat and fairly rich mineral acidity. Pleasant. On the palate it's full and more languid than I had expected from the nose, with ample languid loquat fruit laced with honeysuckle that flows into a soft honeysuckle-laced finish. Pleasant in a fairly rich, delicate key, and will drink nicely as an aperitif, or, because of its relative sweetness (it is in any case dry), with oriental dishes in which the spicing will play off the hints of sweetness.
2 stars

Le Vigne di Zamò

Le Vigne di Zamò Rosazzo Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2009

Pale brassy white with brassy reflections. The bouquet is muted; swishing brings up some minerality but it is clearly under bottle shock. On the palate it's ample and soft with green loquats supported by some savory accents. Direct and up front, and when the nose catches up with the palate it be a nice, simple aperitif, or accompany simple fish dishes.
1 star

La Magnolia

La Magnolia Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with smoky minerality, some savory accents, and hints of loquat. Nice depth, and both loquats and savory accents increase as it opens. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich mineral-laced loquat fruit supported by mineral acidity that flows into a long warm mineral finish. Graceful, and will be quite nice as an aperitif, or with crustaceans, rich fish, and also fish or vegetable risotti and pasta dishes, green pasta sauces, and delicate oriental dishes. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Borgo delle Betulle

Borgo delle Betulle Vigna Cedronella Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2008
Brassy yellowish white with brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with minerality and pungent white pear mingled with some spice and fairly rich cool airiness. On the palate it's ample and quite mineral with languid minerality and smooth mineral acidity that flows into a long mineral finish; it's granitic, and delicate, with sufficient acidity to follow a course but far from tart, and if you like the style, which is quite smooth and unaggressive, you will like it.
2 stars

Scarabolo

Scarbolo Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2009
Brassy white with brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is clean and fresh, with some loquat and honeydew melon supported by hints of sweetness that confer a languid feel. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich minerality supported by loquat fruit and some bitter mineral acidity that flow into a clean rather languid mineral finish. Direct, but pleasant, and will work well as an aperitif or with simple fish, while the soft sweetish underpinning will make it a good bet with oriental dishes too.
1 star

Il Roncal

Il Roncal Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections. The bouquet is elegant, with floral accents and spice mingled with loquat and white pear, with underlying minerality. Nice balance and fairly rich. On the palate it's ample with fairly rich minerality that starts slow but is mouthfilling in a soft key with some citric accents as well, and flows into a clean soft savory mineral finish. Graceful, in a fairly soft key, and will drink nicely with fish or as an aperitif, with mildly flavored antipasti, as it is a delicate wine.
2 stars

Cadibon

Cadibon Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2008
Brassy white with brilliant greenish highlights. The bouquet is moderately intense, with pungent white pear mingled with fresh spice and some savory notes and citrus minerality. On the palate it's fairly rich, with languid loquat berry fruit supported by clean bright mineral acidity that flows into a clean savory finish. Delicate, and will work nicely as an aperitif or with simple mildly flavored fish dishes. It will be perfect in the proper setting.
2 stars

Eugenio Collavini

Eugenio Collavini Ribolla Gialla Vino Spumante di Qualità Brut 2006
Brassy white with brilliant brassy reflections and fine white perlage. The bouquet is elegant with dusky sour lemon/loquat supported by savory acidity and some greenish sage and herbal accents. Pleasant. On the palate it's ample and fairly creamy, with loquat-laced minerality supported by some butterscotch sweetness that tempers the savory notes and gives greater fullness, while flowing into a fairly long peppery finish. It's pleasant and will work quite well as aperitif, though you have to like softer sparkling wines that aren't driven by acidity, because it doesn't have the acidity one finds in, for example, many Pinot Noir based sparkling wines. But it does display a pleasing freshness, and if you like the style is enjoyable.
2 stars

Eugenio Collavini Torian Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2008
Brilliant brassy gold with golden reflections. The bouquet is fairly rich, with loquat fruit supported by clean minerality and some airy spice. Pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's ample, with soft sweet loquat fruit supported by clean savory accents and moderate acidity, which flow into a clean savory loquat finish. It has more acidity than some Ribollas, which provides more direction, but remains a delicate wine that will drink well with mildly flavored grilled or roasted fish, delicate risotti and pasta dishes, and also will be a bet with more mildly flavored oriental dishes.
2 stars

Livon

Livon Solarco Collio Bianco DOC 2009
This is a blend of Friulano and Ribolla Gialla; it's straw yellow and has a fairly rich bouquet with honeydew melon and loquat supported by clean bright greenish acidity and delicate floral accents that emerge with force, bringing honey with them. Quite nice, with quite a bit to say. On the palate it's ample and fairly rich, with languid honeydew melon fruit supported by loquat acidity and some minerality that flows into a fairly long loquat finish. It's pleasant, and will work nicely as an aperitif or with cheese or green vegetable-based pasta dishes and risotti, or with creamy fish, and, thanks to the sweetness of the fruit in the finish I'd also be tempted to serve it with mildly spiced oriental dishes.
2 stars

Note: Solarco derives from Sole and Arco, sun and arch, after a house with an arch one can see the vineyards through. This is the second vintage in which Solarco is a blend. In the past Collio Bianco also had Malvasia Istriana, and this harkens back to that tradition.

Livon Tenuta Roncalto Ribolla Gialla 2008
The vineyard is at the top of the Collina di Ruttazzi, with a southerly exposure that guarantees sun all day long. The wine, which is aged 80% in steel and 20% in tonneaux, is a lively brassy greenish yellow with white rim, and has a delicate bouquet with slight loquat acidity and some pungency mingled with honeydew melon, some minerality, and very slight butterscotch. Opens nicely and is pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's ample and soft with honey-laced loquat fruit supported by acacia and deft acidity that's more fruit driven than mineral, and flows into a clean mineral finish. Pleasant, and will work quite well with simple antipasti, steamed fish, and green vegetable pasta or risotto dishes; I would also be tempted to swerve it with moderately spiced Oriental dishes. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Livon Braide Alte delle Venezie IGT 2007
This is a bend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Picolit and Moscato Giallo that is barrel fermented and aged. It's a vineyard wine; the term Braide means an agricultural terrain adjacent to a canalone or gully, and is just below the hilltop that yields the Ribolla Gialla. The vineyard is planted to 7000 vines/hectare, and yields about 50 quintali per hectare. The wine is classified IGT because Collio doesn't contemplate the blend. Brassy gold with green reflections and white rim. The bouquet is powerful, with deft greenish accents and butterscotch with honey and greenish vegetal accents, as well as acacia, brambles, and bitterness, a combination that brings to mind bright sun on a crisp day. A lot going on, and young too. On the palate it's rich, with languid butterscotch-laced white berry fruit that combines loquat and gooseberry with a degree of languidity and is supported by smooth delicate acidity and tannins from wood that flow into a fairly long clean greenish gooseberry finish with savory underpinning. Pleasant, in a rich fairly international key, and will work well with a variety of dishes, ranging from roast fish through creamy white meats, and also with such things as asparagus risotto or chicken pot pie; because of the sweetness in the finish it will also be nice with oriental dishes, and I would expect it to be long-lived. Give it a year or two -- or more -- to develop. Worth seeking out.

Gradis'ciutta

Gradis'ciutta Collio Ribolla Gialla 2009
Tank sample from steel.
Brilliant brassy white with bright brassy reflections. The bouquet is fairly intense with delicate minerality supported by hints of banana, which are fruit-yeast interaction, and acacia and hoiney as well. Pleasant and has quite a bit to say in a graceful key. On the palate it's full and rich, with clean bright acacia and loquat fruit laced with minerality and underlying sweetness. Graceful, in a fairly sweet key, and will work quite well as an aperitif or with simple, not too flavorful egg, white meat, or fish dishes. Since it's unbottled no score, but it will be quite pleasant upon release.

Furlan Gianfranco

Furlan Castelcosa Ribolla Gialla Collio 2009
Brassy yellow with pale white rim and brassy reflections. The bouquet is fairly intense, and more mineral than many, with iodine and some sea salt more than acacia. Not as clean as some. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich savory minerality supported by delicate loquat acidity and by smooth deft tannins from grapes, as well as savory accents. The nose is up in the air, in a more pungent, old-style key than many. In short, it's in mid-stride.
2 stars

A tank sample of the wine is more pungent, with savory accents, bitter spice, and leesy notes, what in Italian is called feccioso. On the palate it's bright, and fairly mineral, flowing into a languid, delicate acacia blossom finish. Interesting, and gives an idea of what the bottled wine will be when it has recovered from having been bottled -- much improved with respect to now.

Toblâr

Toblâr Ribolla Gialla IGT Delle Venezie 2009
This is produced by a bottler who buys wines. It's brassy gold with brilliant reflections, and has a closed bouquet, though swishing did bring up some leafy accents and spice. On the palate it's richer than some, with acacia honey-laced loquat fruit that's fairly sweet supported by clean loquat acidity that flows into a clean bright loquat finish. Pleasant in a fairly direct key, and when the nose catches up with the palate will be a good food wine.
1 star

Toblâr Specogna Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2009
Tank sample.

Toblâr Ribolla Gialla Vino Spumante Extra Dry
Non-vintage. Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is spicy, with hints of wood smoke and some creamy acacia blossoms mingled with mineral accents. On the palate it's ample and soft, with fairly bright berry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by sparkle that's more peppery than creamy, and flows into a semi-sweet peppery finish. Quite direct, and will work well as an apritif; it's not dry but does have lively acidity.
1 star

Perusini

Perusini Ronchi di Gramogliano Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brilliant brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some honeysuckle and slight spice, with hints of loquat with time. On the palate it's fairly rich, with clean bright loquat and acacia fruit supported by some honey and deft mineral acidity that's fairly delicate, and flows into a pleasantly delicate finish. Quite nice, and will work well as an aperitif or with simple fish dishes or similar. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Perussini Ronchi di Gramogliano Brut Vino Spumante
Non-vintage; this is a blend of Ribolla Gialla and Chardonnay, and is the fourth vintage -- they say they are still refining their aim. Pale brassy gold with fine perlage that bubbles up lazily. The bouquet is dusky, with greenish accents and dried apples mingling with spice and savory notes, and a certain airiness. On the palate it's full and fairly rich, with dried apple fruit supported by apple sweetness and creamy sparkle that flow into a peppery finish. It's not bone dry, and while it does have the acidity necessary for direction, it's not really bracing. It will work nicely as an aperitif or with foods, and si something to consider if you find Champagne to be too acidic.
2 stars

Visintini

Visintini Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections. The bouquet is fairly rich, with acacia and loquat fruit supported by some dusky mineral acidity and a degree of sweetness too. On the palate it's ample and fairly rich, with loquat acacia fruit supported by honey sweetness and fairly languid acidity that flows into a clean delicate loquat finish. Graceful, and will be pleasant as an aperitif or with simple fish, and will also age nicely for a couple of years. Worth seeking out.

Vini La Delizia

Vini La Delizia Vignal Ribolla Gialla Vino Spumante Brut
This is a new wine, in its first (non-vintage) edition. Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and white rim; the perlage is fine. The bouquet is airy, with acacia blossoms and some sage supported by minerality and hints of loquat. On the palate it's ample and soft, with creamy sparkle and delicate honey-laced acacia and minerality that flow into a clean mineral finish. Graceful in a direct, rather up-front key, and will drink well as an aperitif; its competition would be Prosecco, and it meets the challenge quite well.
2 stars

Ronchi di San Giuseppe

Ronchi di San Giuseppe Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2009
Pale brassy yellow with brassy reflections and pale white rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with acacia blossoms and minerality laced with some sweetness and greenish accents; nice depth and though still developing is pleasant. On the palate it's ample with delicate loquat fruit laced with hiney overtones and supported by bright loquat acidity that flows into a clean fresh loquat finish. Pleasant and will be quite nice as an aperitif; it will also drink well with simple risotti -- greens based -- or pasta dishes, and with cold cuts. Worth seeking out.

Valentino Butussi

Valentino Butussi Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2008
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections. The bouquet is moderately intense, with some berry fruit and bitter accents mingled with acacia. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright loquat fruit supported by greenish loquat acidity that flows into a fairly tart loquat-laced finish. Pleasant, and more of a food wine than something to serve as an aperitif; it will work quite well with fish or green-vegetable based risotti or pasta dishes, and also has the acidity necessary for flavorful grilled, or even fried fish. Expect it to go quickly.
2 stars

Puiatti

Puiatti Ruttars Single Vineyard Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brilliant brassy reflections. the bouquet is moderately intense, with honey, acacia and minerality mingled with some deft savory accents. Puiatti Ribolla Gialla Extra Brut Metodo Classico
Non-Vintage
Pale brassy white with fine perlage. The bouquet is intense, with bitter accents and gunflint mingled with sea salt; nice depth. On the palate it's full and though not bone dry fairly dry with languid minerality supported by creamy peppery sparkle and some sweet mineral accents that flow into a clean mineral finish. It's more complex than the other sparkling Ribolla Gialla wines I tasted, and is a wine that will be a nice bet if you want sparkle but want something softer than the bracing acidity of a dry Champagne or Franciacorta.
2 stars

Forchir

Forchir Ribolla Gialla Vino Spumante Brut
Non-vintage
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is spicy, with some sweetish accents and hints of sage. Nice balance. On the palate it's soft and moderately rich, with clean fresh loquat fruit supported by smooth white berry fruit and slight acidity, while the sparkle provides a certain creaminess, and it all flows into a clean fairly bitter finish. Pleasant and a nice alternative to Prosecco; it will drink well at poolside or as an aperitif.
1 star

Forchir Ribolla Gialla delle Venezie IGT 2009
This is an IGT because they are in Grave del Friuli, whose appellations don't contemplate Ribolla. The must spends a night cryomacerating on the skins to enhance its aromas, and is lively brassy gold with bright greenish reflections. The bouquet is fairly intense, with elegant loquat supported by acacia and some honey mingled with clean heather, sage, and bright spice. On the palate it's ample and soft, with pleasant honey-laced loquat fruit supported by acacia and soft loquat acidity that flows into a clean smooth fairly soft loquat finish. Pleasant, and will be a nice aperitif with delicate cheese or vegetable antipasti. It grew upon me.
2 stars

Collutta

Collutta Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2009
This was late harvested, when the grapes were very ripe, and is a tank sample. It's brassy yellow with brilliant brassy reflections, and has a pleasant bouquet with bitter honey, savory accents, and some acacia . Nice balance and promising. On the palate it's ample and soft with fairly bright white berry fruit supported by more savory minerality than present in many, and this is a result of the time spent on the lees. Promising, and will have nice depth and balance, and be richer and brighter, with livelier acidity, than is the norm for Ribolla Gialla.
2 stars

Ronco dei Tassi

Ronco dei Tassi Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy yellow with brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is quite young, and a bit unsettled -- it had been just bottled -- though spice, acacia, and minerality do emerge. On the palate it's fairly rich, with soft mineral-laced sweet loquat fruit supported by dusky bitterness that flows into a clean rather bitter finish with some sweetness and underlying softness. Pleasant, and when it has come together (fall 2010) will drink nicely as an aperitif or with fish that are not too fatty; I could also see it working well with sushi. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Ronco dei Tassi Columello La Grotta Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
This is from a new vineyard about 15 km from the Ronco dei Tassi, and is pale brassy yellow with brassy greenish reflections and white rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with spice and some greenish accents underlain by alcohol. Still developing. On the palate it's ample and soft, with fairly bright loquat fruit supported by peppery acidity that flows into a clean loquat finish. It's quite direct and up front, and the simplicity is in part due to the youth of the vineyard. It will work nicely with flavorful not too fatty fish, including sushi, and similar.

Matteo Braidot

Matteo Braidot Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Tank sample.
Brassy white with brassy rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with some gooseberry that's a bit atypical, laced with warmth, loquat and hay. On the palate it's fairly rich, with smooth sweetish loquat fruit that has distinct gooseberry accents, some peppery spice, and is supported by smooth mineral acidity that flows into a clean soft finish. Pleasant, and will work nicely as an aperitif or with fish, and because of its relative sweetness and smooth fruit-laced softness, will be a good bet with Oriental dishes, in particular sushi.

Anselmi Giuseppe & Luigi

Anselmi Ribolla Gialla Spumante Extra Dry
Non-vintage, but 2008
Pale brassy gold with brilliant golden reflections and fine white perlage. The bouquet is airy, with some dusky bitterness and sparkle supported by hints of acacia and savory notes. On the palate it's full and quite soft, with pleasant very creamy sparkle that flows into a fairly long clean soft acacia and loquat finish. Pleasant, and will be an excellent alternative to Prosecco, and also a good bet if you don't like the bracing acidity of a Champagne. It's best as an aperitif, or for toasting, because it's a bit too soft for foods.
2 stars

Anselmi Ribolla Gialla Delle Venezie IGT 2009

On the palate it's full and quite soft with fairly intense loquat and acacia fruit supported by smooth deft loquat acidity and a degree of sweetness, which flows into a clean sweetish finish. Fairly direct, but this is in part youth. Pleasant and will drink nicely with fish, in particular sushi.

Anselmi La Reguta Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Brilliant brassy gold with lively brassy highlights. The bouquet is very young, with white berry fruit supported by some sea salt, peppery spice, and some citric accents and sage; there is also some loquat, though the citric notes are more apparent. On the palate it's full, with elegant honey-laced loquat fruit supported by considerable soft warmth that flows into a warm loquat finish. It's a bit more intense than the IGT, with slightly brighter acidity and more body, and displays greater depth and elegance. A fine wine for fish, and in particular sushi.

Brassy yellow with greenish brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and very young, with savory notes mingled with acacia blossoms and some spice. On the palate it's ample and fairly rich, with moderately intense loquat fruit supported by considerable languidity and smooth savory accents that flow into a clean fairly direct savory finish. A pleasant, albeit direct interpretation of Ribolla Gialla; I'd have liked a little more airy sweetness.

La Rajade

La Rajade Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy white with brilliant reflections. The bouquet is mineral, with some spice; it's also very young and needs time. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich loquat fruit supported by dusky acidity and flows into a clean rather savory finish with underlying bitter heather. It's in mid stride to the point that a score will be misleading; if the nose develops to meet the palate it will be pleasant.

Conte D'Attemis - Maniago

Conte D'Attemis - Maniago Ribolla Gialla COF 2004
Pale greenish brassy white with brilliant greenish reflections. The bouquet is fairly rich, with honeydew melon and some spice mingled with loquat and slight greenish minerality. On the palate it's ample, and soft, with fairly intense loquat fruit that's languid at the outset, and then develops qarm loquat acidity that flows into a clean fresh loquat finish with considerable warmth. A powerful expression of Ribolla better suited to foods than as an aperitif, and in addition to the standard fish/cold cut pairings, will be nice with oriental dishes, including those from more flavorful schools. It has a story to tell.

Conte D'Attemis - Manziago Ribula Brut Vino Spumante Brut
Non-vintage.
Brassy white with greenish highlights and ifne perlage. The bouquet is mineral, with some hints of breadcrumbs supported by dusky spice. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with more minerality than fruit, while the sparkle confers a pleasant creaminess, while, in the finish, warm loquat acidity that gains definition from savory accents emerges from the sparkle. Pleasant, though a touch more richness of fruit would have been nice; it's a good aperitif if you like sparkling wines that aren't as biting as Pinot Noir can be. It grew upon me.

Canus

Canus Ribolla Gialla Brut

Non-vintage
Brilliant brassy gold with brassy reflections and white rim, and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with honeydew melon and some spice mingled with acacia and slight airiness. On the palate it's full and fresh with clean mineral laced acacia supported by minerality and some sweetness that flow into a fresh, slightly sweet finish. Quite pleasant, and will drink very well as an aperitif; it's a good alternative to a high-end Prosecco.
2 stars

Canus Ribolla Gialla COF DOC 2008
Brassy white with brilliant brassy reflections, and some greenish notes. The bouquet is fresh, with elegant pear fruit laced with acacia and dried leaves, supported by slight spice and underbrush. On the palate it's ample and rather smoky, with fruit that's fairly soft loquat supported by smoky bitter acidity that flows into a clean bitter finish. It's drier than some, and even allowing for an addition year of age, is harder and duskier, while the finish is decidedly savory. A more intense and mineral interpretation of the varietal.
2 stars

Canus Ribuèle Blàncie COF Doc 2005
This spends 6 months on its lees, and is then racked onto the lees of the basic Ribolla, and is also aged in tonneaux. It's lively brassy gold with lively greenish brassy reflections, and has a powerful bouquet with a fair amount of cedar and also yeasty aromas, some spice, and brandied butterscotch. Very different from a young Ribolla. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth with clean fresh minerality and warmth that flow into a clean mineral finish. Pleasant in a richer, more powerful key; it is quite different on the palate too with respect to a young Ribolla, with considerably more depth, power and acidity, and though there is a certain languor to it, the languor is mineral, not sweet. It will work well with creamy cheeses, stewed fish, and is quite pleasant, but a step above and beyond most Ribolla.

Isodoro Polencic

Isodoro Plencic Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2009
Pale brassy gold with brilliant brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with acacia and clean minerality mingled with leaves and spice. Nice balance. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich minerality supported by warmth and some spice, which flow into a clean mineral finish. Fairly graceful in a light, decidedly mineral key, and will work well as an aperitif or with egg or fish-based dishes, including shellfish (mollusks in particular). A nice expression of Ribolla in a mineral key.

Emeran Reya

Emeran Reya Goriska Brda Rebula
This is Slovenian, and was tasted at La Bellanotte's booth; it's brassy gold with brilliant golden reflections and has a fairly intense bouquet with rather pungent sour lemony white berry fruit supported by spice and some greenish accents, and also some petroleum. On the palate it's ample and soft with bright lemony fruit supported by languid acidity that flows into a clean tart finish. Quite direct, but pleasant in a slightly more rustic key, and will drink well with flavorful fish or creamy meats.

Ronco di Zegla

Ronco di Zegla Ribolla Gialla Collio DOC 2005
This is a late harvested wine, whose grapes were golden when picked, and that spent 8 days on the skins before fermenting, followed by 18 months in new tonneaux. The wine is amber with brilliant golden reflections, and has a rich bouquet with candied white berry fruit -- almost toffee -- supported by oaky accents and a fair amount of spice. Over the top but harmonious, and it does have a story to tell. On the palate it's ample and dry with considerable leafy minerality supported by mineral acidity and warmth that flow into a warm mineral finish. Pleasant though very different from the average Ribolla, to the point that the two can't be easily compared. It will drink well with cheesy dishes, and cold cuts, and could work as an aperitif. It takes things to extremes, and it works.

Stanig

Stanig Ribollicine Millesimato Extra Dry 2009
This is a Metodo Charmat, and is white with fine intense perlage. The bouquet is fresh with some herbal accents and spice mingled with minerality and dried leaves. On the palate it's ample and soft, with rich honeydew melon and loquat fruit supported by creamy sparkle and warm loquat acidity that fade into lasting warmth. Quite pleasant, and will work well as an aperitif or with simple antipasti, and will also be nice in the hotter months.

Chianti Colli Fiorentini: The 2010 Vintage Presentation

To Begin, Some Background:

In 1924 the Chianti Classico Appellation came into being, when a group of 33 producers banded together and established the Consorzio del Gallo Nero, whose symbol was a black rooster: Only those whose vineyards fell within the area could join, and only if they met rigorous standards (first of which, the wine had to be red). Members of the Consorzio del Gallo Nero (now Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico) were allowed to call their wines Chianti Classico, while the word Chianti came to mean everything else, and was represented by a Consorzio called Chianti Putto, which was established in 1927.

The Chianti Putto zone was huge, and with time a number of more restricted Appellations were also established: the Chianti Colli Fiorentini Appellation, which dates to 1994 -- as one might expect -- surrounds Florence. It's fairly large, resembling an upside-down horseshoe, and also quite variable, with parts bordering Chianti Classico, and others either extending into the Val D'Arno or up into the mountains behind Fiesole (see the map at http://www.chianti-collifiorentini.it/territorio.php).

In terms of composition and production, the Chianti Colli Fiorentini Disciplinare allows producers considerable latitude: the wine must be at least 75% Sangiovese. They can use more Sangiovese, up to 100% if they want, but can also add autochthonous red varietals such as Colorino or Canaiolo (max 10% of the latter), up to 10% white varietals such as Trebbiano or Malvasia Bianca (this is a break with Chainti Classico, which has banned them), and up to 20% of the international varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah (10% of a given varietal). Wood use is also up to the producer and varies considerably; some use small wood, others large, and still others cement vats or steel tanks.

One important difference between Chianti tout court and Chianti Colli Fiorentini is the release date: whereas Chianti can be released on the first day of March, just a few months after the harvest, Chianti Colli Fiorentini must be held until September 1. The additional aging brings considerably greater maturity and complexity to the wines.

Of the 40 wineries belonging to the Consorzio Chianti Colli Fiorentini 28 bottle their wines, and of these 28 13 presented their wines at the vintage presentation held in Palazzo Pitti's Limonaia this fall. The tasting was conducted by Franco Ziliani, who arranged the Vini D'Annata in order from lightest and most suited to quaffing to most substantial, which makes good sense if one thinks about it, and after we finished with the Vini D'Annata I tasted through the Riserve too. It was a pleasant morning, and I found a number of wines I enjoyed.

As I noted last year, Good Chianti Colli Fiorentini (the volume of which increases yearly) is quite nice. It also represents an excellent value for money because, as a general rule, Chianti Colli Fiorentini is less expensive than some of the other better known central Tuscan appellations.

The Wines

Azienda Agricola Lanciola

Azienda Agricola Lanciola Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This has some Cabernet and Merlot added to the Sangiovese, which is 90%; aged in botti and steel. Pale cherry ruby with some orange in it. Quite light. The bouquet is fairly intense, and greenish, with vegetal notes and powerful sour cherry with slight underbrush. Quite clean, and pleasant savory sea salt too; a fellow taster finds iris blossoms. On the palate it's medium bodied, with bright slightly greenish cherry fruit supported by clean brambly mineral acidity and by tannins that have a warm greenish burr; it's a little more powerful on the palate than the nose suggested, but nicely balanced, and flow into a clean brambly finish with pleasant mineral undertones. It's a food wine, which will work very well with meat based pasta dishes, grilled meats, and light stews.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Lanciola Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva DOCG 2006
Pale almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit supported by some cedar and deft slightly balsamic acidity, and by some brambly accents. On the palate it's medium bodied, and light on its toes, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by lively acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a fairly tart finish. Pleasant, and quite approachable in a food-driven key -- it will work well with roasts or light stews, though it's less suited to being drunk by the glass, and -- unless you are a great fan of Tuscan wines -- won't work as well for you far from the table.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Lanciola Riccionero Pinot Nero IGT Toscana 2006
Pale almandine ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is moderately intense, with hot iron mingled with red berry fruit and some sour vegetal accents. It's rather willowy, and one can almost hear the breezes ruffling the leaves. On the palate it's fairly light, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by brish sour berry fruit acidity that has some brambly accents, and by tannins that are delicate and have a warm burr, and flow into a clean sour cherry finish. It's pleasant, though clearly from a clime that's a little too hot for Pinot, and will drink well with simple grilled meats or light stews.
1 star

Azienda Agricola Lanciola Antiche Terre dei Ricci Terricci Toscana IGT 2006
This is 80% Sangiovese, with the remainder Cabernet, both Franc and Sauvignon. It's cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with berry fruit laced with green pepper and vegetal accents, including some artichoke stem, and clean spice as well, with hints of cedar. A wine that is more international in style. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly bright sour berry fruit supported by greenish vegetal accents and fairly intense minerality, while the tannins are distinctly vegetal and clearly owe some of their substance to the cabernet. It's pleasant, and will drink quite well with grilled meats or light roasts.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Le Torri di Campiglioni

Azienda Agricola Le Torri di Campiglioni Chianti Colli Fiorentini Le Torri DOCG 2008
This is 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the remainder Colorino, Merlot and Canaiolo. Aged in a mixture of tank and barriques. It's dusky cherry ruby with some almandine. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up berry fruit and some bell peppers, with underlying spice and hints of cedar. The Cabernet does make its influence felt. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with cherry fruit supported by haunting greenish accents and deft greenish acidity supported by tannins that have slight greenish accents and flow into a clean slightly green fruit laced finish. It's pleasant and nicely balanced, with an element of Cabernet that does distinguish it from the other wines; it is a bit of a step back into the past when Cabernet was more popular in Tuscany (people now add less than they used to) and as such brings back memories. Pleasant memories (of when I was younger!), and it will drink well with grilled meats or light stews.
2 stars

Castello di Poppiano - Guicciardini

Castello di Poppiano Il Cortile Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This has all the permissible Cabernet and Merlot -- 15% with Cigliegiolo too, and Sangiovese, and is thus the richest wine from an ampelographic standpoint. Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections. the bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up berry fruit laced with India ink bitterness and some vegetal accents, almost artichoke stems, and delicate spice. Pleasant enough but needs time because it's still developing. On the palate it's direct, with clean fresh berry fruit supported by savory notes and smooth slightly bitter tannins, while the acidity is sufficient to provide direction, but not too intense, and flows into a clean rather bitter finish. It's a food wine that will work well with simple roasts or grilled meats, and also with meat-based pasta dishes. Very simple, and despite the international varietals classic old style, the sort of wine one sets out on the table and drinks with the foods. It's not a wine to sip by the glass. If you seek depth and complexity this isn't it, but at the table the speed with which people drink it may surprise you.
1 star

Castello di Poppiano - Guicciardini Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva DOCG 2007
Deep pigeon blood ruby -- almost poured ink, with cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with brambly vegetal accents supported by berry fruit and graphite shavings, and fairly intense minerality. On the palate it's fresh, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by brambly minerality and deft mineral acidity that flow into a clean fresh rather brambly finish that does have some dusky overtones. Pleasant in a fairly direct key, and though it's not a wine that will stand out at a tasting, if you set it out with friends who have simply come to enjoy a hearty meal, you'll have to replace the bottle more than once. This isn't necessarily what wine lovers look for, but it is what wine is all about.
2 stars

Castello di Poppiano Tricorno IGT Toscana 2007
This is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, aged in barriques. It's deep pigeon blood ruby, close to poured ink, and honeysuckle a cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with plum cherry fruit supported by stony minerality and spice, and by moderate alcohol; it also gives an impression of youth. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cassis blackberry fruit with an underpinning of cherry, and considerable minerality supported by graphite shaving bitterness and some iodine that flow into a clean fresh mineral finish. It will work nicely with roasts, stews, and other hearty winter dishes.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Castelvecchio

Azienda Agricola Castelvecchio il Castelvecchio Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, aged in year-old barriques. Pale cherry ruby with black reflections and some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some berry fruit mingled with slight greenish accents, and hints of acidity that provide direction. On the palate it's fairly full and quite smooth, with fairly rich slightly greenish berry fruit supported by cedar-laced spice that flows into a clean slightly greenish finish; it's slightly lacking in depth and doesn't have as much acidity as I would have liked, but is quite approachable and very easy to drink. If you're traditionally minded like me you may find it less exciting than others, but it is eminently drinkable.
2 stars

Fattoria di Bagnolo - Marchesi Bartolini Baldelli

Fattoria di Bagnolo Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
Sangiovese, Colorino and Merlot, which was added to increase smoothness. They only make Chianti Colli Fiorentini -- no Chianti tout court. The wine ages in a mix of year-old barriques and a botte. Deeper cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim tending towards brick. The bouquet is fairly intense, and quite approachable, ruffiano in Italian, with ripe rather sweet cherry fruit supported by India ink bitterness and dusky accents that bring dappled shade to mind. On the palate it's fairly rich, with cherry fruit supported by decidedly smooth tannins that have a degree of India ink bitterness to them, and some licorice root, and by moderate acidity -- a little less than I might have liked, though it is quite drinkable, and is a wine that will work well by the glass far from the meal as well as with foods; it will drink well with less fatty meats, for example roast beef, as opposed to grilled ribs.
2 stars

Fattoria di Bagnolo Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2007
Deep cherry ruby with black reflections and deep cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with dusky cherry fruit supported by graphite shaving bitterness and brambly notes; it's lively and rather nervous. On the palate it's medium bodied and quite smooth, with rich cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity, a fair amount of graphite shaving bitterness, and smooth sweet tannins that flow into a fairly long, fairly rich bitter graphite finish. It's quite approachable, and will drink nicely with grilled meats or roasts, and also has the capacity to age nicely for 5-8 years.
2 stars

Fattoria di Bagnolo Capro Rosso Colli della Toscana Gentrale IGT 2007
This is 80% Sangiovese, 10% Colorino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in a mixture of barriques and tonneaux, a significant percentage of which is new. The wine is deep pyrope, close to poured ink, and has a lively cherry rim, while the bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some berry fruit supported by cedar; it needs another year to come into its own. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with rich cherry fruit supported by dusky bitter accents and moderate brambly acidity that flow into a clean rather dusky finish with underlying graphite shavings that continue at length. It's pleasant, in an approachable, well-polished quite international key, and if you like the style you will enjoy it. If you prefer more aggressive, traditional wines, it won't work as well for you. In terms of accompaniments, it will work well with drier roasts, e.g. pork loin or turkey breast, and also will with time be pleasant to drink by the glass.
2 stars

Fattoria di Fiano

Fattoria di Fiano Ugo Bing Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This also has some Merlot. Fermented in a mix of steel and cement. Lively black cherry ruby with black reflections and white rim. The bouquet is intense, and more animal than some, with berry fruit supported by underbrush and some animal tang, hints of wet stable straw and an abundance of sea salt, and slight cedar as well. It's in mid-stride, but in a rustic key. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with rich sour cherry fruit supported by slightly pungent minerality and by considerable India ink bitterness that emerges powerfully in the finish, while the tannins are smooth and savory; it's well polished, with minerality and bitterness carrying more than acidity, and pleasant to drink. If you like the style you will enjoy it, and it will work well with grilled or roasted red meats.
2 stars

Fattoria San Michele a Torri

Fattoria San Michele a Torri San Michele a Torri Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This ages in part in botti, and in part in cement. It's pale ruby with black reflections and rim paling to white. The bouquet is bright, with sour berry fruit supported by some underbrush and savory notes; it's a touch wilder than some, and there are also savory notes. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by brambly berry fruit acidity, and by powerful tannins that have a warm slightly greenish Sangiovese burr and flow into a clean fairly bitter finish. A pleasant food wine that will work quite well with grilled meats, including fattier meats such as sausages, ribs, or chicken with its skin, and also with light stews; it will also work well with rich legume-based dishes such as fagioli all'uccelletto. It will go quickly.
2 stars

Fattoria San Michele a Torri San Giovanni Novantasette Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva DOCG 2006
This is Sangiovese, and ages for a time in botte before spending several months in older barriques. It's deep almandine laced ruby with almandine rim, and has a fairly intense bouquet with warm cherry fruit laced with balsamic warmth and spice, with some cedar as well. Quite young and still coming together, though it does bring to mind the countryside on a hot summer day in Central Tuscany. On the palate it's ample and rich, with warm cedar-laced berry fruit supported by sweetness that is likely alcohol related, and by clean bitterness; there isn't much acidity, and this is the vintage, which was quite warm, while the tannins are slightly vegetal and almost brambly. It's quite alcoholic, and you have to like that; if you don't you will find it too strong for you. If you do, it will work well with roasts or stews. But it is a fairly particular wine.

Fattoria Torre a Cona

Fattoria Torre a Cona Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
Ages in part in steel, and in part in large oak. The vineyards are new, planted in 2002-2004. Pale slightly orange cherry ruby with almandine in the rim. The bouquet is bright and brambly, with sour cherry fruit supported by greenish spice and deft greenish acidity. Young vines, but they display pleasing life. On the palate it's medium bodied, with bright sour cherry fruit supported by lively brambly acidity with some greenish mineral accents, and by light tannins that have a fresh burr, and flow into a clean slightly greenish finish. Light, fresh, and zesty; it will drink quite well with simple grilled meats or meat-based pasta dishes, and also has sufficient acidity to work well with fried meats -- including lamb chops -- and vegetables. Expect the bottle to go quickly, and it will be perfect in the proper setting.

Fattorie Giannozzi

Fattorie Giannozzi Villa Marcialla Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This is a tank sample, 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, aged in steel with slight microoxygenation. Steel because they decided to work with steel when they set up the cellars, and are happy with the result. The wine is pale lively ruby with black reflections and some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish accents mingled with berry fruit and some bramble, and underlying black berry and currants. It's still developing, but promises well. On the palate it's fresh, with lively slightly sour cherry fruit supported by clean brambly acidity, and by tannins that are a bit more aggressive than I would have expected from a wine with Merlot; they have a warm brambly burr, and flow into a clean sour finish. I had expected greater depth and richness; it's light and agile, and very much a food wine with quite a bit of acidity that will work well with grilled meats -- sausages, ribs and chicken with the skin, or with fried meats and vegetables. In short, a fresh zesty summer wine that will also be a good bet at a cookout. Particular and if you like the style, which is traditional you will like it.

La Colombaia Ville di Bagnolo

La Colombaia Ville di Bagnolo Terre delle Fornaci Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
Large wood; this is a cask sample bottled for the presentation -- they generally bottle late, and decided to give the 2008 even more time than usual. Deep cherry ruby with black reflections and some garnet in the rim. The bouquet is muted, and a bit unsettled,; the first aroma is bouillon supported by savory spice and berry fruit. Still up in the air. The palate is also odd, with berry fruit laced with cola on first sip, and spice, and supported by smoother sweeter tannins that have sweetish cocoa notes, and -- says a fellow taster -- licorice. It's a wine that tries very hard, and comes across as having been forced into being more than it might have wanted to be. A fellow taster says it's pushed, and more cellar than vineyard.
1 star

Azienda Agricola La Querce

Azienda Agricola La Querce La Torretta Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This ages in 2 and 3-year old barriques; is primarily Sangiovese with a little Merlot and Canaiolo. Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, and fairly sweet, with cherry fruit supported by cedar, some spice, and aromatic herbs; it's quite young, and displays nice depth in a fairly international key. On the palate it's medium bodied and quite smooth, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by quite a bit of cedar, which flows into a fairly long bitter finish that has smoky cedar underpinning. The oak is fairly apparent, especially in the finish, and it needs another year to come together; it's quite approachable and will drink well with simple meat dishes, while a fellow taster suggests an Antipasto Toscano with prosciutto and salame.
1 star

La Querce IGT Toscana 2007
Sangiovese and 10% Colorino; it's deep cherry ruby with cherry reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cedar laced with some ripe berry fruit and some hints of balsam that are from oak, also nice spice. Quite approachable though it needs another year to come together, and the oak is apparent and always will be. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with fairly rich cherry fruit that gains definition from savory herbal --rosemary and sage -- notes and is also supported by tannins that have a warm savory cedar laced burr, and flow into a clean fairly bitter finish. Pleasant in a 70s-80s style, with more oak more evident than seems to be the current fashion; if you like the style it is enjoyable and will work well with grilled red meats.
2 stars

La Querce M IGT Toscana 2007
This is their first vintage of a Merlot in purezza, from a vineyard planted in 2003. It's deep pigeon blood ruby, and has a fairly intense savory bouquet with quite a bit of cedar and some cassis; it's clearly oaky but this is also the wood stepping in for young vines. On the palate it's ample, with rich jammy cassis fruit supported by cedary accents that confer a degree of grace, moderate acidity that's enough to keep the wine in line, and very smooth tannins that flow into a cedar laced finish. It's a nice first vintage, and it will be worth waiting to see what emerges as the vineyard matures.

Malenchini

Malenchini Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is fairly rich, with bright slightly brambly sour cherry fruit supported by tart sour cherry acidity, some minerality, also hints of India ink with moderate floral accents too; there are also hints of tree bark. On the palate it's bright, with zesty sour cherry fruit supported by rich brambly acidity and by tannins that have a warm zesty Sangiovese burr, and flow into a clean bright bitter finish. Quite up front, and a classic old style Chianti, a wine that will work very well with foods, in particular grilled meats and light stews, but also ribollita and other hearty Tuscan soups. It's not a wine to drink far form the table, but will bring considerable joy to the table. If you like the style, which is quite traditional, you will enjoy it very much. If you prefer smoother softer wines it won't work as well for you. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Malenchini Chanti DOCG 2009
Pale cherry with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fresh, with cherry and raspberry fruit supported by violets and some greenish notes mingled with apricot fuzz and sweetness. Bright, in an appealing fruity key. On the palate it's fresh and light, with rich ripe cherry and forest berry fruit supported by moderate brambly acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a slightly greenish finish. Quite direct and up front, a cookout or picnic wine that will also work well with simple first course dishes and light meats, and go quite quickly. Drink it now to enjoy its freshness, and a second bottle will come in handy.
1 star

Malenchini Bruzzico Toscana IGT 2006
This is a blend of Cabernet and Sangiovese; it's deep cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with cherry fruit supported by vegetal accents and slight green pepper, Cabernet's contribution, and by some iodine and leaf tobacco mingled with dusky pencil shavings and graphite. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by dusky mineral bitterness and graphite shavings, and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fresh slightly bitter finish. Pleasant, though it's a little more staid than the Chianti Colli Fiorentini; there isn't quite as much acidity and this is in part the vintage, which was hotter and consequently riper and less acidic. It is in any case quite approachable, and will drink well with grilled red meats or hearty stews, including game such as boar or venison.
2 stars

Petreto

Petreto Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG 2008
This is from a cooler part of the appellation and at 400 MASL, with considerable temperature excursions, and is a tank sample. It's primarily Sangiovese -- 85-90% with Merlot, and ages primarily in steel, with some cement and botti for 30%. It's deep pyrope ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is intense, and bright, with jammy accents and a degree of acidity that brings sunshine to mind at first sniff, supported by cassis, blackberry, and some underlying spice. The overall impression is chewy. On the palate it's medium bodied and quite smooth, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit that has pleasant cassis overtones and is supported by slightly greenish jammy acidity, and is supported by smooth sweet tannins that have a slight savory underpinning, and flow into a clean fresh slightly greenish finish. It's fresh, fruity, and quite approachable, and will drink nicely with hearty drier roasts -- roast beef cooked rare and sliced thick, or pork loin for example. If you like the style, which is fairly international, you will enjoy it very much.
2 stars

Petreto Podere Sassaie IGT Toscana 2007
The only white of the day, this is 45-45 Semillon and Sauvignon, with the remainder Chardonnay, fermented in steel, and spends 5 months on the lees. It's brassy yellow with greenish reflections and white rim, and has a fairly intense, decidedly mineral bouquet with iodine and brambly greenish notes mingled with alcohol, some vegetal accents at the outset, and gooseberry that gains in intensity with time. Gives an impression of tartness. On the palate it's much more savory than I would have expected from the nose, with warm salty tropical fruit -- gooseberry - pineapple -- supported by greenish accents from grape that bring cedar to mind, and flow into a warm savory finish. Pleasant, and will drink nicely as an aperitif with cheese or fish based antipasti, and also has power enough to drink well with creamy fish or white meats; I might even be tempted to think about Welsh rabbit.
2 stars

Petreto Bicciolé IGT Toscana 2007
This is a Merlot, and is deep cherry ruby with black reflections. the bouquet is fairly intense, with considerable graphite shaving bitterness mingled with iodine and cherry fruit laced with cassis, and some blackberry sweetness. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with fairly rich cherry currant fruit that gains definition from dusky graphite shaving bitterness, and is supported by smooth sweet tannins that have a slight youthful burr, and flow into a clean fairly rich berry fruit finish with underlying bitterness. It has a pleasing dusky richness to it, and will drink well with succulent, not to fatty red meats, for example roast beef slicked thick. If you like the style, which is more controlled than one finds in traditional Chianti, you will enjoy it.
