Sparkling Wines To Celebrate Valentine's Day With (Or To Simply Enjoy)

This fall I went to a presentation of sparkling wines in Viareggio, on the Tuscan coast. It was interesting, because rather than focus on a particular kind of wine, there was everything from light, spritzy Prosecco through much more serious, well aged Franciacorta and Champagne. I had a great time, and for New Year's I presented a selection of the wines that impressed me most, limiting myself to one wine per winery.

Most of the wineries presented more than one wine, however, and many of the other wines were almost as impressive as what I selected. So here are the rest of my notes, just in time to help you decide what to break out for Valentine's Day. Or anything else in the coming months that will benefit from Bubbly Bollicine.

The wines, in (roughly) the order I tasted them:

Casale Falchini Metodo Classico Millesimato 2003
Pale greenish brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. Elegant bouquet with breadcrumbs and minerality mingled with dappled shade and tropical fruit that adds richness. On the palate full, rich, with bright mineral-laced fruit that gives way to a long mineral finish with savory accents that gains depth from peppery sparkle. Quite pleasant in a slightly decadent key, and will work well with rich risotti, creamy fish, or white meats.

Negro Angelo e Figli
Negro Angelo e Figli Metodo Classico Millesimato 2004
This is a blend of pinot nero and chardonnay; it's pale brassy yellow with brassy reflections and fine perlage, and has a delicate bouquet with clean slightly greenish minerality and hardwood ash mingled with some savory notes. On the palate it's clean, and delicate, with deft mineral laced white berry fruit that's supported by fine creamy sparkle and gains direction from savory accents. It will be pleasant as an aperitif or with delicate fish or cheese based dishes.

Giovanni Negro Roero Arneis Extra Brut 2004
Lively gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is clean, with deft floral accents and some bitter almond; the overall impression is welcoming. On the palate it's full, and rich, with lively white berry fruit supported by clean acidity and an underlying savory bitterness that is characteristic of Arneis, and flows into a clean bitter finish brightened by minerality. Pleasant, and willdrink well with foods, for example creamy risotti -- shrimp and asparagus both come to mind -- or with fish or white meats.

Carpené Malvolti
Carpené Malvolti Kerner Brut
Carpené is known for Prosecco, but also makes this from a grape in the Alto Adige. Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and fine perlage. Rich, elegant bouquet with honeysuckle, citric acidity, and underlying sweetness. On p full and soft, with pleasant slightly bitter gooseberry fruit supported by citric acidity that flows into a clean bitter finish, while the sparkle contributes pleasing softness. Quite welcoming, and will be nice as an aperitif or with delicate vegetable or mild cheese dishes.

Carpené Malvolti Promotico Brut
Promotico is an autochthonous grape from the highlands between the Abruzzo and the Marche, in the south, which Carpené Malvolti has recently begun to work with. The wine is pale brassy yellow with fine perlage, and has a fairly rich bouquet with greenish citric accents and some vegetal overtones. Pleasant, and quite lively. On the palate it's clean and rich, with fairly intense chewy citric fruit that gains depth from greenish accents and fullness from sparkle, and flows into a clean citric finish. Elegant, and with respect to Kerner has more backbone; it will drink well with creamy first course dishes for example pasta with flavorful green vegetable sauces (artichokes come to mind given the season), or with savory grilled fish.

Carpené Malvolti Prosecco di Conegliano
This is the Carpené wine one most commonly sees; it's pale brassy white with fine perlage, and has a delicate bouquet with floral accents and clean white fruit, a combination of apples and pears that gains depth from savory accents. Welcoming. On the palate it's full, with clean white pear that gains direction from savory minerality and peppery sparkle, and flows into a clean fruit laced finish. Pleasant and fresh, and will drink well as an aperitif or far from the table -- I'd have liked a little more acidity to serve it with foods.

Carpené Malvolti Rosé
This is a blend of Pinot Nero and Raboso that is partially dried; it's pale pink with fine pink reflections and bright perlage, and has a fairly rich bouquet with red berry fruit supported by raspberry acidity and hints of bread crumbs, with underlying marzipan that's from the partial drying of the Raboso. Deft. On the palate it's clean, with fairly bright berry fruit supported by sparkle and minerality that flow into a clean berry fruit finish with mineral acidity. Pleasant in a very fresh way, and will drink well as an aperitif, or with fish or creamy white meats; chicken with mushrooms comes to mind.

Carpené Malvolti Metodo Classico Brut Millesimato 2004
Disgorged in 2007; This is a Pinot Nero. It's pale brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage,and has a deft nose, with fairly rich minerality mingling with wet bread crumbs and underlying acidity with slight greenish accents. On the palate it's clean and bright, with deft minerality supported by clean savory accents that flow into a clean, fairly long slightly bitter finish. Quite pleasant, and will drink very well with foods, ranging from flavorful, not too fatty grilled or roasted fish through creamy white meats.

Il Calepino
Il Calepino Brut Metodo Classico
This is a Chardonnay, and spent 36 months on the lees. Lively gold with brassy reflections, and has a fairly rich bouquet with gunflint minerality laced with vegetal accents and some butterscotch. Nice balance. On the palate it's bright, with lively minerality supported by the sparkle, which confers a salty feel, and flows into a clean savory finish with gunflint bitterness. Quite approachable, combining complexity with a brightness that will make you sip and sip again.

Valcalepino Fra Ambrogio 2001
This is a Chardonnay-Pino Nero blend that spent 5 years on the lees; it's lively gold with fine perlage, and has a rich, powerful bouquet with bread crumbs and minerality laced with marzipan and bitter almonds, with all held together by slightly greenish gunflint. Nice balance, but brooding. On the palate it's full and rich, with powerful white berry fruit supported by ample savory minerality from pinot nero, with clean acidity and the zest of the sparkle to hold it up. It's elegant but particular, and you have to like the more mature style of sparkling wine to enjoy it. If you do, it is quite nice.

Tenuta Bonomi Castellini
Tenuta Bonomi Castellini Franciacorta Brut
Pale brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine intense perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with clean citric acidity and hints of marzipan supported by some gunflint. Nice balance and has quite a bit to say. On the palate it's clean, with bright minerality and crisp apple fruit supported by clean mineral acidity that flows into a clean finish. Quite nice, and will drink well with foods, especially creamy risotti, or white meats. Very pleasant, and quite approachable.

Tenuta Bonomi Castellini Franciacorta Satèn
Non-vintage. Pale brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish accents and butterscotch mingled with slight bread crumbs and underlying green apple. Elegant. On the palate it's ample and soft, with clean fairly rich minerality and citric acidity supported by the sparkle, which flows into a clean slightly bitter finish. Quite approachable, but doesn't have the depth of the brut. This is not a defect, because Satèn is supposed to be simpler and more approachable than Brut; it will be nice either before or during the meal.

La Scolca

La Scolca Metodo Classico Brut
Pale brassy yellow with fine perlage and brassy highlights. The nose is clean, with fairly rich bread crumbs mingled with lemon fruit and powerful gunflint. Considerable depth. On the palate it's clean, and rich, with powerful acidity supporting greenish lemon fruit, while the sparkle adds considerable peppery spice, and it all flows into a clean bitter finish. Bracing and quite pleasant; it will drink very well with white meats, be they from the sea or the land.

La Scolca D'Antan 1995
Pale brassy gold with brassy highlights and fine perlage. The bouquet is rich and complex, with smoke and bitterness mingled with balsamic notes, hints of petroleum, and pleasing acidity. Great depth. On the palate it's rich and full with bright acidity and an abundance of bread crumbs supported by marzipan and toasted bread crust, while the sparkle is soft and welcoming. It's a wine one could have a long conversation with, and Well worth seeking out.

La Scolca Gavi Metodo Classico Brut 2000
Pale greenish gold with brassy greenish reflections, and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with bread crumbs mingling with crushed almonds and hints of marzipan sweetness, together with dried figs and hints of hardwood ash. Considerable depth. On the palate it's full and rich, with fairly bright minerality supported by lively peppery spice from the sparkle -- August 200 was scorching; there isn't as much acidity as there would be in a cooler year, and as a result the wine is more an interplay of bitterness and minerality than acidity and minerality, and comes across as a bit flatter than usual. In short, pleasant, but suffers the vintage; because of its power and bitter pepperiness I would think about serving it with oysters, perhaps.

Guido Berlucchi
Guido Berlucchi Cellarius Brut 2004
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections, slight greenish highlights, and fairly fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with gunflint and minerality mingled with some crushed almonds and green apple; the combination brings to mind dappled shade. On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly bright crisp apple fruit supported by lively green apple acidity and sparkle that finishes up quickly, making the wine seem short as well, though the apple acidity does carry on past it. Because of the way the sparkle fades and because it is quite palate cleansing, I would drink it with foods, rather than by itself. In the proper setting it will be quite nice.

Guido Berlucchi Cellarius Rosé 2003
Pale onion skin with fine intense perlage. The bouquet is bright, with rich acidity and some raspberry fruit supported by sparkle and bread crumbs, with intriguing hints of mint as well. On the palate it's full, with delicate raspberry fruit that gains depth from bitter mineral acidity and is also supported by sparkle that confers peppery spice, leading into a clean savory raspberry finish. Pleasing, and will drink nicely as an aperitif or with succulent white meats.

Berlucchi Cuvée Storica Franciacorta Brut
Pale papery white with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, and vinous, with bread crumbs and butterscotch with minerality and buttered toast, with hints of brown sugar and some greenish accents. Complex. On the palate it's full, and bright, with clean somewhat sour white berry fruit supported by greenish accents and peppery sparkle that flow into a clean finish. It's pleasant enough, though a touch settled and not as light on its feet as Berlucchi's other wines.

Fratelli Berlucchi
Fratelli Berlucchi Franciacorta Brut 2003
Pale brassy yellow with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with butterscotch and hints of winter squash supported by airy minerality and slight gunflint. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich bitter minerality and underlying very ripe sour melon supported by clean sparkle, and some bitterness that flows into a clean mineral finish. It's softer than one would expect of a Franciacorta Brut, and this is an effect of the hot 2003 summer, which drove down acidities.

Fratelli Berlucchi Ftanciacorta Satèn 2003
Pale brassy yellow with fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with greenish accents and vegetal notes laced with savory minerality and bread crumbs, and underlying hardwood ash. On the palate it's full, soft, and bright, with citric ct supported by clean fairly sweet mineral acidity that flows into a long clean finish. Pleasant, and though it does display the overripeness typical of the 2003 vintage, it has dealt with it well, and will drink well as an aperitif or perhaps with a cheesy risotto, because the bitterness that emerges in the finish gives nice definition.

Fratelli Berlucchi Franciacorta Pas Dosé 2003
Lively brassy gold with brassy greenish reflections, gold highlights, and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with butterscotch and clean winter squash and some underlying vegetal acidity. On the palate it's full and dry, with moderately intense minerality that gains support from sparkle and some acidity; to be frank I'd have liked more, because it isn't as tight as it could have been.

Astoria
Astoria Prosecco di Valdobbiadene 2006
Pale greenish white with brassy highlights and reflections, and fairly fine perlage. The bouquet is fresh, with green apples and lively acidity; the effect is direct and pleasant. On the palate it's equally fresh, with rich green apple supported by acidity and sparkle that confers peppery spice, and flows into a clean crisp apple finish. Pleasant, and will drink well as an aperitif, with cold cuts, or with first course dishes.

Astoria 20° Anniversario Prosecco di Conegliano 2006
This is a one-time label for the wine, which is pale golden green with greenish highlights and fairly fine perlage. The bouquet is powerful and fresh, with crisp green apples and some greenish vegetal accents. Quite nice. On the palate it's bright, with lively apple fruit that gains depth from apple acidity that has slight bitter accents, and flows into a clean apple finish. Quite refreshing, and will drink nicely as an aperitif or with foods --it's not quite a tutto pasto, an Italian expression meaning it will go with anything, but will work very well with cheese based antipasti, cold cuts, and cheese sauces in general. Worth seeking out.

Astoria Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore Di Cartizze 2006
Pale brassy gold with greenish reflections and fine perlage. Deft bouquet with clean crisp apple fruit supported by hints of chalk and some minty herbal spice that adds considerable depth. On palate full and bright with crisp apple fruit supported by clean mineral acidity that flows into a clean bracing apple finish. Nice as an aperitif, and it will also be nice at a cookout with grilled fish or vegetables.

Azienda Agricola Caseo
Azienda Agricola Caseo Gioia Oltrepò Pavese 2003
This is a 70-30 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero and is lively gold with greenish reflections, and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with greenish vegetal accents mingled with winter squash and gunflint minerality that confers bitterness. Fairly rich on the palate, and though brut not too dry; there's fairly rich bittersweet apple fruit shot with butterscotch and supported by soft peppery notes from sparkle. Very approachable, of the come-hither sort, and will work very well as an aperitif. It's an excellent choice if you're entertaining people who are new to sparkling wines.

Azienda Agricola Caseo Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Nero 2003
Onion skin rose with some salmon accents and fine perlage. The bouquet is bright, with wet bread crumbs and yeasts mingled with acidity and clean spice. Quite a bit going on in a harmonious way. On the palate it's bright, with lively dry blackberry fruit laced with bitter acidity, while the sparkle adds considerable depth and flows into a clean bitter savory finish. Pleasant, and though one could drink it as an aperitif it will work better with foods, ranging from creamy risotto through creamy, succulent white meats. Quite nice.

Azienda Agricola Caseo Gran Cuvée Pas Dosée 2001
Lively gold with brassy greenish reflections and fine perlage. Rich nose with elegant citric fruit shot with butterscotch and hints of winter squash that sound odd but work. Considerable depth. On palate full, with bright white berry fruit supported by minerality and some tropical fruit, with pleasing acidity, which flows into a clean butterscotch finish with greenish accents and peppery spice. Quite nice, and will drink very well with foods. The Oltrepo has great potential and here we see it.

Azienda Agricola Caseo Extra Dry Blanc De Blancs Oltrepò Pavese 2002
This is a barrel fermented Chardonnay that then spends 48 months on the lees, and is lively brassy gold with gold highlights and fine perlage. The nose is powerful, with petroleum and mineral accents mixed into intense greenish notes. Particular. On the palate it's full, and rich, with clean crisp apple fruit supported by warm apple acidity that gains depth from smoke and hits of petroleum, while the sparkle is fine and peppery, flowing into a clean tart finish with hardwood ash bitterness. It's interesting,and much better than one might expect given the reputation of 2002; if you like mature sparkling wines you will enjoy it.

Non-vintage, but a 2002
Pale brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with bright bitter apple mingled with gunflint and underlying bitterness and sea salt. On the palate it's bright, with lively lemony apple fruit supported by sparkle and clean bracing acidity that flow into a clean, almost citric finish. Pleasant in a food key -- I think it's too acidic to work as an aperitif -- and will drink well with succulent grilled fish, or even fried fish.

Lively brassy gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly intense, with bitter petroleum-laced minerality mingled with citric acidity and gunflint. Graceful. On the palate it's full and bright, with lively citric fruit supported by minerality and tart apple skin that flows into a clean tart finish with some vegetal accents. Quite pleasant, in a graceful key; it has quite a bit to say and invites one to sit and chat for a spell.

Cantine Scuropasso Pinot Nero Brut Oltrepò Pavese
Non-Vintage; it's pale brassy yellow with brassy highlights, and has a fairly rich bouquet with greenish vegetal accents mingled with winter squash, overripe lemon, and warm mineral acidity. On the palate it's medium bodied and crisp, with clean bright apple fruit supported by minerality and clean acidity, while the sparkle adds fullness and peppery spicy accents, and it all flows into a clean mineral finish with lasting bitterness. Pleasant, and will drink nicely as an aperitif or with grilled fish or creamy white meats, from the land or the sea. In other words, versatile.

Andreola Orsola Extra Dry Valdobbiadene Prosecco
Pale greenish brassy yellow with fine perlage. The bouquet is rich, with apple fruit mingled with floral accents and hints of honeysuckle. Inviting. On the palate it's bright, with rich apple fruit that's not as sweet as the nose suggests supported by renette apple acidity that flows into a clean fresh apple finish, while the sparkle, which is smooth, adds acidity and tart accents. Pleasant in a direct way and will be nice at table with simple white foods, fish or meat, and as an aperitif. It will go quickly.

Pale gold with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with apples and floral accents and overlying coolness; the overall impression is quite fresh. On the palate it's clean, and bright, with lively apple fruit supported by dry apple minerality that flows into a clean finish that gains depth from peppery sparkle. Pleasant, and will work nicely as an aperitif or with simple richly flavored foods, ranging from pasta with vegetable sauces through white meats, from either sea or land.

Pale brassy yellow with brassy reflections. Rich bouquet with deft crisp apple fruit supported by floral accents, and though it's quick to say there's great depth. On palate full, with bright apple fruit that's crisp but not acidic, gaining depth from the sparkle, which adds volume and flows into clean apple finish. Quite pleasant and will be very nice as an aperitif or at poolside. Carefree pleasure in a glass.

Pale brassy yellow withfine perlage. The bouquet is rich, with apple and floral accents laced with hints of mint; it's quite inviting and very fresh. On the palate it's full and bright, with pleasant crisp apple fruit supported by clean bright acidity that flows into a clean crisp finish with (again) apple overtones. Quite pleasant, and will drink nicely as an aperitif though I'd be tempted to open it with friends far from the table.

Le Bertole
Le Bertole Prosecco Valdobbiadene Extra Dry
Pale brassy yellow with brassy highlights and fairly fine perlage. The bouquet is fairly rich, with bright apple fruit interlaced with dried apples and supported by minerality and some cut flowers. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright apple fruit supported by clean crisp golden delicious acidity of the sort one finds in just-ripe apples, and by smooth sweet sparkle. Pleasant, and will drink quite well as an aperitif. Worth seeking out.

Villa
Villa Diamant Franciacorta Pas Dosé 2002
Brassy gold with fine intense perlage. Rich bouquet with butterscotch and some minerality with hints green apple. Great depth, and very tight. On palate bright, with clean rich minerality supported by sparkle and savory accents with mineral-citric acidity that flows into a clean savory finish with underlying bitterness. It demands and holds one's attention. Wow!

Anteo
Anteo Martinotti
This wine is named after Federico Martinotti, a researcher at the Istituto Sperimentale di Enologia in Asti, who, in 1895, devised a technique for adding sparkle to large volumes of wine by inducing the secondary fermentation in tanks capable of withstanding the pressure, and then keeping the wine under pressure through the bottling (the idea was patented in 1907 by a Frenchman, Charmat). Anteo is in the Oltrepò Pavese, where Pinot Nero was first planted in Italy, and this is an 85-15% blend of Pinot Nero and Chardonnay that spends a year in autoclave; it's pale brassy white with brassy reflections and fairly fine perlage, and has a fairly rich bouquet with ripe apple fruit mingled with some marzipan and hints of brown sugar sweetness. On the palate it's light, and deft, with fairly bright bitter minerality supported by moderate acidity and clean sparkle that flows intoa clean, slightly bitter finish. Quite direct, in a pleasing way, and will drink nicely as an aperitif or with simple egg or cheese-based dishes.

Anteo Brut Metodo Classico
This is an 85-15 Pinot Nero Chardonnay blend, and spends 36 months on the lees. It's pale brassy gold with greenish highlights and fine perlage. The bouquet is deft, mi mineral and savory accents mingled with slight hints of mint and chalk. On the palate it's fresh and direct, with clean crisp apple and white berry fruit supported by sparkle and moderate mineral acidity that gains depth from crisp apple. It will drink nicely as an aperitif or with foods that aren't too rich.

Anteo Rosé
This is a Pinot Nero, and is pale onion skin pink with onion skin reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is moderately intense, revealing red berry fruit, some acidity, and a fair amount of alcohol; it had been disgorged recently when I tasted it and I would expect it to be more intense now. On the palate it's fairly full, and direct, with clean red berry fruit supported by smooth sparkle and deft acidity. It will drink well with foods.

Anteo Metodo Classico Nature
This is a Pinot Nero pas dosé, and is pale brassy white with brassy reflections; the perlage is fine. Clean bouquet with minerality and some greenish vegetal notes mingled with acidity and some gunflint. On palate clean and deft, with bright minerality supported by sparkle and clean bitter accents. Quite nice, and will drink well with foods, from fish to creamy white meats. Lots to say in a crisp mineral key.

Vazart Coquart
Vazart Coquart Spécial Foie Gras Champagne
This is called foie gras because they think it's a good match. It's pale brassy gold with fine perlage, and has an elegant nose with gunflint and butterscotch mingled with marzipan and some dried fruit. On palate it's full and rich, with honeysuckle and candied fruit supported by peppery sparkle and clean mineral acidity that flows into a fairly sweet finish. Quite elegant, and more delicate than vibrant, with an intriguing decadence to it as well. Not Brut (their Brut is good too), but very nice.

Conte Vistarino
Conte Vistarino Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Brut
Pale brassy yellow with fine perlage; the bouquet is clean and bright with some bitter gunflint accents; the overall impression is pleasant. On the palate it's clean, and again bright, with pleasant minerality and mineral acidity that flows into a fairly bitter finish. It will drink nicely as an aperitif or with crustaceans.

Conte Vistarino Cuvée della Rocca Pinot Nero Brut Oltrepò Pavese
Pale brassy white with brassy reflections and fine perlage. The bouquet is bright, and mineral with clean acidity mingled with gunflint and bread crumbs. Nice balance. On the palate it's clean and bright, with lively mineral acidity and clean citric notes that flow into a clean bitter finish, while the sparkle adds depth. Elegant, and will drink well as an aperitif or with succulent fish, or creamy white meats.

Conte Vistarino Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Nero Millesimato Metodo Classico Brut 2003
Brassy gold with fine perlage; the bouquet is rich, with bread crumbs and hints of damp toast mingled with warmth and gunflint that brings to mind a hammer striking granite, with underlying mineral acidity. On the palate it's full and dry with bright gunflint minerality and considerable body derived from both acidity and sparkle, which flows into a clean fairly bitter finish. Pleasant, and though it does seem a little softer than it might in a cooler vintage, it displays considerable depth, and is quite pleasant.

Dolcetto and Dolcetto 2007

Winemakers tend to be a sociable lot, and if you visit a winery at (roughly) lunchtime, you may well find yourself invited to stick around for a bite, especially if it's a family-run operation. The wine will of course be from the cellar, but you shouldn't expect the flagship wine. Rather, what people dink every day, and if you're in Piemonte's Langhe (home to Barolo and Barbaresco, among others), chances are you'll be drinking Dolcetto.

Despite the name, which translates as little sweet one, Dolcetto is a dry red wine, with characteristic bitter almond and berry fruit aromas on the nose, and rich lively fruit on the palate; by comparison with many other Italian red wines, especially Barbera, it is low in acidity, and were it not for its lively tannic bitterness it would be rather flat.

But there is that bitterness, and the end result can be quite graceful in a medium bodied sort of way -- the perfect wine to complement all sorts of foods, from carne cruda all'albese, the chopped raw beef that's Piemonte's answer to steak tartare, to pasta with the drippings of a roast or a red sauce (or even agnolotti, the classic Piemontese stuffed pasta with a meat filling) through simple grilled meats or light stews. Small wonder then that Dolcetto is Piemonte's preferred vino a tutto pasto, or mealtime wine.

The Dolcetto grape is now primarily grown in a broad swath of southern Piemonte, from Dogliani, which is west of and reaches higher elevations than the Barolo production zone, through Diano and Alba, and on east though Asti, Langhe Monregalesi, Acqui, and finally Ovada, in the Alessandrino. According to Nicolas Belfrage, the grape, which he calls "characterful," originated in the Acqui-Ovada area sometime before 1800 -- it's mentioned in a permit dating to 1799 -- and spread west with time. It's also grown western Liguria, where it's called Ormeasco, and is rare.

From an administrative standpoint, Piemonte's Dolcetto can be divided into seven major appellations: Dolcetto di Dogliani, Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba, Dolcetto D'Alba, Dolcetto D'Asti, Dolcetto Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto D'Acqui, and Dolcetto di Ovada. There is also a new entity, Dogliani DOCG, which takes the place of the old Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore.

Though one might expect the appellations in which Dolcetto is a the primary red wine produced in the area (all except Asti and Alba) to produce the best wines because the winemakers don't have other reds to distract them, this isn't the case: Some of the finest Dolcetti are from around Alba. What one does note is a tendency to aim for greater power in some of the other appellations, especially Dogliani, which has gone so far as to rename its Dolcetto Superiore di Dogliani DOC Dogliani DOCG. I have mixed feelings about this, in part because people unfamiliar with Dolcetto appellations -- the majority, I would venture to say -- will probably not make the Dogliani-Dolcetto connection when they see wines simply labeled Dogliani, and therefore not know what they are (I have the same reservations about the Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba Appellation, which doesn't require its producers to include the word Dolcetto on their labels).

The other thing that bothers me about Dogliani is this aim for power and desire to bulk up the wines; when I visited the area a few years ago a number of producers told me that their wines had more dry extract than Barolo, that they were therefore Important Wines worthy of aging. While it's true that dry extract gives a quick-and-dirty estimate of concentration and structure, a concentrated Dolcetto is still a Dolcetto, whose hallmark (for me) is lively freshness of bouquet and sassy freshness on the palate. A Dolcetto that spends several years in bottle will loose that freshness, and, to be brutal, bring to mind a 40-year old who was beautiful in pictures taken 20 years ago, but has since sagged noticeably.

Bottom line: Dolcetto is a wine to enjoy when it's young and fresh. It will hold 3-4 years, but I would be leery of one that's much older.

And this brings us to production: Dolcetto the wine is a monovitigno, or single-vine wine made just from Dolcetto grapes; yields range some from Appellation to appellation, with Acqui setting a maximum yield of 9.5 metric tons per hectare for the base wine, to Dogliani setting a maximum of 7 tons/hectare. These are maximums, and many producers will be harvesting significantly less to increase concentration. Fermentation is generally in steel, with minimum alcohol level ranging from about 11% for base wines, and up to 13 for Superiore and Dogliani. Dolcetto base can be released in the spring/summer following the harvest, while Dolcetto Superiore and Dogliani must be held longer, until November for Dogliani and until the January following the harvest, e.g. January 2006 for a 2005 vintage wine, for many of the Superiori.

Winding down, a couple of words about the vintages presented and some quick general impressions. The vino d'annata, or vintage wine, is 2006, which was a very nice vintage, with rich bouquets and lively zesty flavors. Many of the Superiori are 2005s, which are a bit more problematic. 2005 saw quite a bit of rain, and cooler temperatures, so the grapes didn't ripen quite as well, and consequently some of the wines display less fruit, falling back upon tannic bitterness for structure.

Also, a couple of thoughts on Dogliani DOCG as opposed to Dolcetto di Dogliani and the other Dolcetti. I found the Dogliani DOCG wines taken as a group to quite alcoholic, and very dependent upon the characteristics of the vintage. Those from 2005 were concentrated but lacking in fruit and freshness, and a fellow taster said the more he swished the less he found because the alcohol covered everything up. The 2006 Dogliani DOCG was a distinct step up, with much brighter fruit coupled with more body and more acidity; I felt the wines had considerably more character than the 2005s, and also than the 2006 Dolcetto di Dogliani. However, I found in some of them a conscious effort to smooth the tannins that left the wines overbuffed, and to be frank cut them off at the knees. The bottom line is that Dogliani DOCG has yet to determine what it really is. Some is quite nice, displaying greater richness in the traditional mold of Dolcetto, while some is attempting, with considerably less success, to be Important. I obviously prefer the former.

This said, the wines, tasted the week of September 3 2007. They're divided (roughly) by appellation.

On the palate it's full, and fruit driven, with slightly jammy cherry fruit that has a sweet undercurrent to it supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have a warm bitter bite to them and flow into a clean slightly greenish bitter tannic finish. It's direct, in an up-front sort of way, and will drink well with quickly grilled meats or light stews. A pity about the sulfurous pungency, because otherwise it would have been a good option if you like wines that have a slightly sweeter cast to them.

It's direct, and simple, and will drink well with simple red meats.

They also make a Rosato from Dolcetto, which is labeled vino da tavola, by racking the must off the skins. It's pale salmon with pink reflections, and has a bright bouquet with lively raspberry fruit; it's quite fresh and one wouldn't necessarily guess it to be Dolcetto. On the palate it's full, smooth, and soft, with pleasant cherry laced raspberry fruit with clean red currant acidity that flows into a fairly long finish. A refreshing wine for cold cuts, hearty soups, lighter grilled meats (or fish), and picnics.

If you like this rather rustic style it shows polish, but you have to like this style, in which fruit is giving way to tertiary aromas and flavors. It will drink well with red meats.

On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich decidedly sour fruit that one wouldn't have expected from the nose, supported by fairly smooth tannins that flow into a clean sour finish. It's brash and direct, and will drink well with fattier meats of the grill, or also with fried meats and vegetables because of its acidity.

It's clearly much older than one would expect a Dolcetto to be, but has held up very well and it is nice, though something of an enological curiosity; if you like a rather earthy mature style it is quite nice, and eye-opening proof of Dolcetto's ability to age when from a good vintage and properly stored. But you do have to like the style.

They also make a Vino Spumante Brut Rosato, which is a Brachetto fermented to dryness, and is labeled as a Vino da Tavola. It's pale salmon in color and has an intriguing bouquet with bright raspberry fruit supported by raspberry acidity and an impression of sweetness. Pleasant. On the palate it's dry, but not too dry, with bright raspberry fruit that gains direction from acidity and greenish notes, while fullness comes from the sparkle too. Pleasant, and will be quite nice as an aperitif or with creamy dishes. Curious about the wine? It's a return to the past of sorts: They used to make a Brachetto Rosé, and decided to add bubbles to it. The result is quite drinkable.

It's a touch tired, but will work well with simple meats or light stews, and because of its acidity, also with fried foods.

This said, if you come across it alone, it is pleasant and will drink well with simple grilled meats or light stews.

It's a pleasant food wine, of the sort that's but will drink well at table, complementing what it's served with rather than demanding the limelight. What with? Simple grilled meats or light stews.

When properly oxygenated, it's quite pleasant, in a rather robust slightly rustic way, and will drink well with grilled meats or light stews. Expect it to go quickly, and you may want a second bottle.

On the palate it's ample and again fairly sweet at the outset, with moderate cherry plum fruit supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have a bitter greenish burr whose intensity gains into the finish, which is frankly tannic, though apricots gradually emerge as the tannins fade. Quite odd, and it's one of those wines you will either like or not. It's not what I look for in Dolcetto.

On the palate it's ample and fairly sweet, with smooth soft cherry plum fruit that again has some apricot overtones, and is supported by graphite bitterness that flows into a clean rather bitter finish. It's unusual for a Dolcetto, and a bit soft, but if you like this sort of wine it will work well with succulent red meats, including spicier dishes that would clash with a more tannic wine. It's not what one would expect of a Dolcetto, and some fellow tasters were muttering about Moscato, which I understand, though I didn't think of the descriptor.

It's a very modern expression of Dolcetto, especially the bouquet, and quite pleasant too; it will drink well with a wide variety of foods, and you may find yourself wanting a second bottle.

It plods in an angry way, rather than step gracefully, and because of the tannins will drink best with fattier foods or rich stews that profit from a wine that clears the palate between bites. A fellow taster finds high acetic acid.

On the palate it's fairly full, with bright berry fruit supported and to a degree overshadowed by peppery tannic oak leaf bitterness that flows into an angry peppery finish. This is not a wine to sip by the glass, but because of its aggressive peppery accents it will work well with succulent to fatty foods, and be perfect with, say, a well seasoned grilled chicken with its skin on. In short, it's a wine that demands the proper setting, and when given it, will shine.

On the palate it's full, with rather languid red berry fruit supported by a mixture of sour berry fruit acidity and angry peppery tannins that flow into a peppery fruit laced finish with underlying bitterness. If you like this sort of rustic wine you will enjoy it, but you have to like the style.

On the palate it's medium bodied and bright, with lively sour cherry and blackberry fruit supported that gains direction from deft sour berry fruit acidity, and is supported by clean greenish bitter tannins that flow into a clean rather bitter finish. Graceful, in a tannic key, and is one of those wines that you'll be drinking happily at a meal, thinking how good everything is, and suddenly realize how much the wine is contributing. In terms of accompaniments, it's versatile, and will work well with meat or vegetable-based first course dishes, simple grilled meats, and light stews.

It's pleasant in a fairly direct, up front key, and is a classic food wine that will complement what it's served with -- grilled meats and light stews, but also fried meats and vegetables --without hogging the limelight. Expect the bottle to go quickly.

On the palate it's full and dusty, with fairly rich sour berry fruit supported by moderate acidity and ample bitter tannins that again have quinine bitter notes and flow into a tannic finish. Unusual.

It's unusual for a Dolcetto both because of its size and because of the aromas; if you like this sort of exotic registry, you may find it interesting but it is atypical. Because of its relative sweetness it will work well with succulent, spicier fare, for example barbecued meats. But you have to like the style.

It has a pleasing feel too it, though it is also obviously past its peak; the tannins have begun to fold in over much, and the nose is settling, and in doing so shedding some of the fresh elements that make Dolcetto the pleasant quaffing wine it is at its best. Should you happen upon a bottle, it will drink nicely now with grilled meats or light roasts, though I wouldn't hold it for any length of time.

This said, it will drink nicely with a roast or stew, but you have to like somewhat older and more staid wines.

This would have been quite nice in 2005, and though I as a fanatical wine lover still find it nice now, most wine drinkers would want more on the nose.

On the palate it's medium bodied, with brisk slightly sour cherry and forest berry fruit supported by tannins that have a bitter greenish burr and flow into a clean bitter tannic finish. It's quite direct, but I found it growing upon me, and it will drink well with grilled meats or light stews, and also has the verve necessary to work with fried meats and vegetables. In short, it's versatile, and a food wine.

On the palate it's medium bodied, with fairly intense sour cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a greenish burr and flow into a moderately long tannic finish with some bitter almond notes that add depth. It's direct, and will drink well with the foods it's served with, without trying to attract attention to itself. In short, a wine to set out and drink.

On the palate it's medium bodied, with moderate fruit supported by bitter accents and sour acidity, while the tannins are smoother than I would have expected in a young Dolcetto, and flow into a clean bitter finish. Its direct, and I'd have liked more richness on both nose and palate than I found. It will drink well with simple grilled meats and such.

I'd have liked more depth, though there is considerable alcohol (which is one of the reasons for the sweetness) it doesn't have much verve and comes across as a bit too soft, at least for me. Because of this softness it will drink well with drier meats.

On the palate it's medium bodied with moderate frankly generic fruit that gains direction from sour plum acidity and is supported by ample tannins that are smoother than I might have expected from a young Dolcetto, and flow into a clean bitter finish with some warm savory balsamic accents, while the tannins do reveal a slight bite. I hate to say this because I have liked the wine in the past, but I found it lacking in grace and flat this time.

Pleasant, in a rather charged key, and will drink well with succulent grilled meats, including fattier cuts such as leg of lamb, and will also do nicely with stews or roasts.

It's pleasant in a fairly rich key, and will drink well with succulent red meats or light stews. But I would decant the bottle.

Because of this smoothness it will work well with drier meats, but I found myself wishing for more verve and liveliness, because the wine is fairly settled.

I found it a bit softer than I might have liked; because of this it will work better with drier meats than with more succulent dishes.

It's charged, and not quite as clean as it might be, though the underbrush does fade

On the palate it's full, and fairly sweet, with ripe plum fruit that gains direction from moderate sour plum acidity, and is supported by smooth sweet tannins that are quite polished, and flow into a clean fairly sweet plum finish with a slight greenish tannic burr that keeps it from settling. It's pleasant is a smooth, soft rather overripe fruit driven key, but this isn't really what I associate with Dolcetto, which should (I think) have some bite to it, and also freshness. But if you like the style, it will work well with drier roasted meats.

I'd have liked greater intensity to the fruit than I found. This said, because of the tannins it will drink well with succulent meats off the grill.

It's direct in a cheeky sort of way, and will drink quite well with simple grilled meats or light stews; it will also be a nice wine to serve at a cookout. Expect it to go quickly in the proper setting.

On the palate it's ample and smooth, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by clean cherry acidity, and by sweet tannins that are quite smooth for a young Dolcetto, and flow into a clean finish that combines tart plums with a degree of sweetness. As it oxygenates the wildness fades, though not completely, revealing plum fruit in addition to the balsamic notes, while the tang resolves into warm acidity. In other words, it's a wine that will benefit from being decanted, and will drink nicely with drier meats, either roasted red meats cooked medium, or white meats. If you like this slightly rustic style you will enjoy it.

On the palate it's ample and soft, with smooth plum fruit supported by moderate plum acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean plum laced finish with bitter tannic overtones. It's overripe, for me, but by comparison with a number of other 2005 Dogliani wines has more of a tannic bite, and as a result will perhaps work better with foods -- still drier roasts and pot roasts, but the tannins will help balance the richness of the sauce or gravy the meat is served with. If you like this big, soft, fruit driven style you will enjoy it.

If wines are about fruit and the interaction between it, tannins, and acidity, this is on the fringes.

It's a big fruity wine, and fairly soft, and if you like this style you will enjoy it, though I wouldn't suggest it for those who prefer tighter wines. Because of its softness it will drink well with drier meats.

The color is less charged than some of the Dogliani wines, but the nose is more in line with the others, revealing cooked plum fruit laced with metallic notes, some spice, and alcohol strong enough to confer a degree of sweetness. It's tired. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderately intense plum fruit supported by moderate acidity and by ample tannins that have a lax feel to them, like a person whose arms hang after a long day moving boxes, and flow into a tired plum finish. There's no verve and precious little life to it, and this is a pity, because I remember this wine when it was a Dolcetto di Dogliani as having a body and drive that it doesn't display now. A pity, and I'd be happy to see a change in direction here.

Quite refreshing, and very pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's rich, with powerful cherry fruit supported by almost raspberry acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that have bitter almond overtones and flow into a clean berry fruit finish that gains depth from bitter accents. It's quite pleasant, and will contribute mightily to a meal built around a steak or lamb chops, or to tasty stews, and for some reason as I sipped a had a vision of a steaming chicken pot pie. Hunger perhaps, but the wine would be very nice with it. In short, a versatile food wine that will contribute beautifully to what it's served with. Worth seeking out.

The bouquet is fairly intense, with plum cherry fruit supported by underbrush and some balsamic accents that gain depth from mentholated overtones and greenish spice; as it oxygenates the fruit becomes fresher, shifting some towards berry fruit from plum. On the palate it's full and soft, with ample cherry plum fruit supported by clean smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean tannic finish. It's overripe after the fashion of most of the 2005 Doglianis, but has greater control and depth than most, and is also a little less overripe; the fruit, though plum, has some berry fruit accents, and feels fresher. Because of its smooth softness it will work well with drier meats, and will be a good choice if you like this ample soft fruit driven style. As was the case with Aldo Marenco's wine, however, the 1997 Bricco Botti I tasted a few years ago was harvested much less ripe than this, and therefore the fruit register was more towards berry fruit than plum, and when I tasted it I remember finding it much more interesting than I am finding this now.

I found it overmuch and over soft; because of its softness it will drink well with drier meats, but I found myself wishing for more backbone and verve.

It's big, and soft, and if you like this rather overripe style it will go well with drier roasts or pot roasts, but you have to like the style.

Because of these tannic accents it will work better to balance the sauces one might serve with drier meats, though it is still a wine you should only consider if you like soft overripe wines. If you prefer more verve, it won't work for you.

It's pleasant enough, displaying greater freshness than most of the Dogliani wines, and is one of the few I might think to serve with succulent grilled or roasted red meats. It's not something to set aside, but will be nice now.

On the palate it's fairly bright, with cherry plum fruit supported by fairly intense cherry plum acidity and by decidedly bitter tannins that lay a graphite shaving trail over the tongue and flow into a distinctly bitter finish. As it oxygenates the balsamic notes fade, while berry fruit with slight greenish almond accents comes more to the fore. In other words, it will benefit from decanting, and in terms of accompaniments will drink nicely with succulent red meats off the grill or light stews, and you may find yourself wanting a second bottle.

Poured pyrope ink one could use to fill an ink well with. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cherry plum fruit supported by underbrush and some wood smoke, and some greenish accents as well. On the palate it's full and quite soft, with ample plum fruit that gains direction from delicate sour plum acidity, and is supported by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a dusky, unexpectedly tongue-drying tannic finish; though harvesting overripe grapes to obtain the desired polyphenolic ripeness has cut the acidity back substantially, Dolcetto's tannins still do emerge, more than in many of the other Dogliani wines, and I can't help but think of this as positive, though I'd have liked greater freshness overall. In terms of accompaniments, drier meats served with sauces or gravies.

Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is a bit on the wild side, with warm balsamic acidity and sea salt mingled with some underlying berry fruit and alcohol. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright sour cherry fruit supported by clean sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth, though they do have some astringent accents, and it all flows into a clean fairly bitter tannic finish. With more oxygenation, the wine opens, displaying elegant tart cherry fruit laced with some greenish accents and pleasant underlying spice. In other words, it's a wine that will benefit from decanting, and will drink well with succulent grilled meats or light stews.
