The 2007 Barolo: Serralunga, and then some 2005 Barolo Riserva

This year Nebbiolo Prima began with the 2008 Roero, followed by the 2008 Barbaresco and the 2007 Barolo; there were also a few Barbaresco Riservas, and on the last day a number of 2005 Barolo Riserva wines. The afternoons were structured somewhat differently, with Monday afternoon dedicated to the 2001 vintage, a retrospective if you will, Tuesday and Thursday dedicated to winery visits and tastings, Wednesday free (and I did take advantage of that), and Friday an optional visit to Diano and Dogliani to taste Dolcetto di Diano and Dolcetto di Dogliani/Dogliani.

A full week, but both pleasant and profitable, and I learned quite a bit during the afternoon sessions, while the mornings were profitable as always.

To begin, a couple of words on the vintage.

With Barolo we had the 2007 vintage, which is more approachable than the 2006 we tasted last year, with many of the wines richer, more opulent, and readier to drink. This said, as vintages go it's not as good as the 2006, and though the bottles will work better in the short term (3-5 years and perhaps a little longer) the 2006 has, I think, much better potential for long-term ageing. This is not a bad thing; I found many 2007 wines that will be quite pleasant with foods (not as much in the way of meditation wines), and vintages that mature sooner are necessary, because they give us something to enjoy while we await the vintages that need time.

Looking specifically at Serralunga, while it is the Comune known for producing the most powerful, long-lived Barolo, I have found it to be the most temperamental too, demanding perfect weather during the vintage, and if that is not forthcoming, being a bit more difficult than some of the other Comuni. 2007 did have its off moments, and they emerge in some -- certainly not all -- of the wines from Serralunga. But enough that you should choose with care.

A final practical point: I took a terrific volume of notes in the course of the five days of Nebbiolo Prima. To put everything up at once would be unthinkable, and putting up all of the Barolo notes together would be awkward. So I will be posting Roero, Barbaresco, and then Barolo by Comune, in the space of several posts. The wines are listed in the order they were poured, which within the Communes is by vineyard. Therefore if a winery has more than one vineyard, its wines will be separate.

Enough Talk! The Wines:

Pio Cesare Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with cedar laced sweetish berry fruit supported by spice and some peppery acidity. On the palate it's fairly direct, with full slightly sweet dusky berry fruit supported by tannins that have a savory splintery burr and by moderate rather bitter acidity that flows into a fairly bright tannic finish. It's quite approachable in a direct key, and will drink well with grilled meats or steaks.
1 star

Gemma Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with peppery spice and sea salt mingled with some cedar; it has an airiness to it, and not much fruit. On the palate it's fairly intense, with moderate tour cherry fruit supported by ample rather peppery tannins and moderate berry fruit acidity that flow into a fairly long sour cherry finish with greenish accents and a tannic underpinning. It's powerful in a fairly direct key, and the palate is ahead of the nose, which needs another year to come together.
2 stars

Fontanafredda Serralunga D'Alba Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is full, with moderately intense berry fruit that has some candied accents and is supported by mentholated spice and moderate acidity, Quite young. On the palate it's ample, with moderate fruit supported by dusky graphite laced bitterness and by tannins that are smooth and flow into a rather mineral finish with some graphite shaving bitterness. I'd have liked more richness to the fruit on the palate, which fades too quickly to the minerality of the finish. This is in part youth, because the wine is still developing, but it's also the wine.
1 star

Cascina Luisin Leon Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, with jammy berry fruit notes supported by peppery spice and some gum Arabic. On the palate it's bright, with warm sour berry fruit supported by dusky savory tannins and slight balsamic accents, which flow into a fairly long warm savory berry fruit finish. It's quite young, but shows a certain promise, and I would give it a year or two before I thought about drinking it, expecting it to age well for a decade thereafter. It grew upon me.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Nada Giuseppe Barolo DOCG 2007

Fairly deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense and mineral with some smoke, but not much fruit; there are hints of cocoa and cold coffee however. On the palate it's brighter than the nose suggests, though rather languid, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by sour cherry raspberry acidity, and by tannins that are smooth and rather dry, flowing into a clean dry tannic finish. There's a sinuosity to it -- soft richness of fruit and tannin -- which isn't standard for Barolo but is fairly typical of this vintage, and makes it quite approachable even in youth. It will drink well with grilled meats or roasts now, and will also age nicely for a decade or more.
2 stars

Villadoria S.A.S. Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with spice and cedar and some gum Arabic, but not much fruit. On the palate it's ample and rather languid, with again moderate fruit, and to a greater degree minerality supported by mineral acidity and some tannins. There's simply not much there; I'd have expected more fruit and more acidity but both are delinquent.
1 star

Giovanni Rosso Serralunga Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is powerful, with some jammy berry-plum fruit accents and quite a bit of cedar supported by intense alcohol and some nose tingling spice. On the palate it's ample and spicy, with moderately intense savory berry fruit supported by warm savory tannins that flow into a fairly long salty finish with lasting warmth. It's pleasant in a slightly understated key; I'd have liked a little more richness to the fruit, but it will drink well with grilled meats or roasts.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Guido Porro Vigna Santa Caterina Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is intense, with delicate rosa canina supported by savory notes, slight leaf tobacco, and deft berry fruit; it's quite young but has a graceful air of power to it. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by slight sweetness and peppery spice more than acidity, and by tannins that have a warm burr and flow into a fairly long tannic finish. It's more ahead on the nose than the palate, which needs a couple of years to settle and digest the tannins; it will be worth waiting for, I think.
2 stars

Fontanafredda Vigna La Rosa Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with wood smoke and peppery spice with some penetrating acidity, but not much fruit; rather there are hints of leaf tobacco. On the palate it's fairly rich and quite smooth, with moderately intense dusky sour berry fruit that has some graphite shaving bitterness to it, and is supported by moderate berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do display a slight savory burr, and flow into a clean savory berry fruit finish with lasting warmth. Pleasant in a middle of the road key; it needs a year to come together and will then age well for at least a decade, perhaps more.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Guido Porro Vigna Lazzairasco Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with spicy wet leaves and some smoke with underlying sea salt. Not much fruit. On the palate it's fairly bright, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by minerality and cedar-laced tannins that flow into a moderately long mineral finish with a strong tannic underpinning. I'd have liked greater richness to the fruit, which is too quick to surrender guidance to the tannins.
1 star

Rivetto Dal Comune di Serralunga D'Alba Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is elegant and rather ripe, with fairly rich slightly jammy cherry plum fruit supported by deft spice, and some hints of leaf tobacco, with slight cedar as well. On the palate it's pleasant, with rich cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense mineral acidity and by tannins that are smooth and sweet, with a slight cedary overlay that has yet to fold in. It's quite elegant in an international key, but needs another year at least for the tannins to smooth over and fold in. If you like the style you'll enjoy it.
2 stars

Azienda Vinicola Palladino Serralunga Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is decidedly old style, with warm balsamic accents and balsamic acidity laced with some sour berry fruit and underlying leaf tobacco and sea salt. On the palate it's bright, with lively slightly leathery cherry fruit supported by balsamic acidity and tannins that start smooth but become quite splintery in the finish. It's pleasant in a frankly traditional key, but needs at least a couple of years for the tannins to get their bearings and begin to fold in; it will likely always be fairly tannic, aging well for a great many years. If you like the style you will enjoy it, but you have to like the style.
2 stars

Cascina Cucco Cerrati Vigna Cucco Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some scalded milk and slight milky acidity; as it opens some cedar and dusky spicy notes also emerge as does slight tartness. On the palate it's ample, with jammy cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense plum acidity, and by tannins that have a peppery cedar laced burr and flow into a decidedly tannic finish. Considerable extraction, ripeness, and a lot of oak; it needs at least a year for the tannins to settle in, at which point it will be ample in a ripe key, and is a wine you should only consider if you like this style. If you prefer brighter wines with more acidity and tighter tannins it won't work for you.
1 star

Gemma Colarej Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly rich, with smoky balsamic accents and warmth mingled with some sea salt and a certain airiness. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a warm savory balsamic burr and flow into a fairly tannic finish. It's pleasant in a traditional key, but needs a couple of years to get its bearings; if you like the style you will enjoy it very much, and even if you are of more modernist tendencies, you will find things to think about as it ages. And it should age well, because it's quite vigorous.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with sour red berry fruit supported by some savory notes and slight greenish accents, and as it opens wet leaves and hints of leaf tobacco. On the palate it's full, with fairly powerful red berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that are powerful and have a graphite shaving bitter underpinning and flow into a fairly long peppery tannic finish. Quite powerful and quite young; it needs a couple of years to get its bearings, and will then age well for many years, revolving more about power than finesse, In short, it will be a good choice with a porterhouse steak, which may be more Tuscan in the Italian panorama (think of the bistecca alla fiorentina), but is still very nice.
2 stars

Ascheri Sorano Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is peppery, with quite a bit of spice and some underlying cedar, and also some fairly ripe berry fruit. On the palate it's full, with bright rather spicy sour cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and considerable warmth, while the tannins are fairly rich, and have a cedary burr that flows into a long sour cherry finish with a deft peppery tannic underpinning. The nose needs a year to catch up with the palate, which is also young, and it will develop nicely in time in a bright middle of the road key; I would expect it to age well for a decade or more.
2 stars

Ascheri Sorano Coste e Bricco Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is muted, of the lights out and shutters closed variety, swishing more brings up slight spice and some alcohol. On the palate it's full, with fairly bright decidedly mineral fruit that has some bitter graphite accents and is supported by tannins that display a considerable cedar laced burr, which carries through into the finish where some cold coffee also emerges. The structure is more powerful than the fruit, and overshadows it.
1 star

Azienda Agricola Brovia Cà Mia Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with quite a bit of alcohol and some spice, and also some underlying red berry fruit. Quite young and still coming together. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit supported by fairly bright berry fruit acidity and slightly greenish tannins that have a savory cedar laced overlay, and flow into a savory berry fruit laced finish. It's fairly direct, though this is in part youth, and also rather vigorous, and should clean up nicely in the space of a year or two, in a middle of the road key.
2 stars

Pio Cesare Ornato Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is quite oaky, with a great rush of greenish cedar and some spice mingled with scalded milk and alcohol. Squalling. On the palate it's equally oaky, with greenish cedar that completely blankets everything, and flows into a long cedar laced finish with tongue-tying tannins. A barrel stuffed into a bottle, and once it's in there that deep it won't come out.
1 star

Gigi Rosso Airone Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some graphite shaving bitterness and some penetrating mineral spice. On the palate it's considerably more along, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and some graphite shaving bitterness, and ample smooth tannins that flow into a fairly quick tannic finish. It's a touch short; the fruit is quicker than I might have liked about handing things over to the tannins, but they do stay with us. This said, it needs time, at least a year for the nose to develop, and has a long future thereafter. Expect it to do interesting things in a traditional key.
2 stars

Paolo Manzone Serralunga Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is intense and a bit odd, with warm sour berry fruit supported by, well, sweaty red head, with some sea salt as well. It's likely a phase, as I have never smelled this in a Barolo previously, and as the wine opens it does shift some towards leaf tobacco and leather. On the palate it's bright, with rich sour cherry fruit supported by savory minerality and tannins that are ample and sweet on the outset, but become dry in the finish, which is moderately long and settles into lasting warmth. It needs at least a year to develop, and two would be better, by which time it would be middle of the road in key, and age well for many years.
2 stars

Paolo Manzone Meirame Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is spicy with some peppery accents and fairly intense nose tingling acidity, but not much in the way of fruit. On the palate it's rather languid, with cherry plum fruit supported more by minerality than acidity, and by tannins that are ample and rather blocky, and flow into a dry slightly greenish tannic finish. It's very much up in the air, and frankly too young to judge, because it could come down several ways.

Germano Ettore Cerretta Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with moderate fruit laced with hardwood ash and penetrating acidity that at present overshadow the fruit, and by some minerality and alcohol. On the palate it's brighter than the nose suggested on the outset, with berry fruit that quickly surrenders to an angry rush of cedar laced tannins that become peppery in the finish, while there's more (slight) minerality than acidity to provide direction, and the finish has some warmth. Too much oak for me; it overshadows the fruit.
1 star

Giovanni Rosso Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with jammy berry fruit supported by sweetness and slight menthol, and by slight greenish cedar; it's very young, but has opened nicely. On the palate it's full and fairly rich on the outset, with bright cherry fruit that quickly gives way to considerable warmth and tannins that have a warm savory balsamic overlay and flow into a long warm tannic finish. It's very young in a fairly traditional key, and needs time, at least a couple of years, for the tannins to begin to fall into place, assuming they do, because they are rather hard. If they do it will be long lived in a fairly traditional key, and be a wine to drink more with hearty red meats, which will benefit from the palate cleaning action of the tannins, than by itself.
2 stars

Palladino Azienda Vinicola Parafada Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, in a traditional key, with warm balsamic acidity and some greenish savory accents. Quite intense. On the palate it's ample, with fairly bright sour berry fruit supported by balsamic acidity and savory tannins that flow into a long savory quite tannic finish. It's quite young, and needs a couple of years for the tannins to smooth and blend into the wine; if you are traditionally minded you will enjoy it, but if your tastes run more towards ripe fruit it won't work as well for you. Expect it to be quite long lived.
2 stars

Massolino Parafada Barolo DOCG 2007
Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense and greenish, with pleasant savory accents and some sour berry fruit with slight scalded milk; it's still coming together. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are splintery, and flow into a warm rather dry tannic finish. It's still very young, with the tannins in the angry squalling stage; it needs a couple of years, by which point it will be bright in a middle of the road key, and age well for a decade at least thereafter.
2 stars

Mirafiore Lazzarito Barolo DOCG 2007

A note: This is Fontanafredda's top-of-the-line.
Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and smoky, with a fair amount of alcohol as well, and bright berry fruit supported by considerable sea salt. On the palate it's ample, and a bit riper than I expected, with cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense mineral acidity and by tannins that are ample and rather splintery, and flow into a warm fairly rich sour berry fruit finish with a splintery tannic underpinning. It's a child, and needs another couple of years to come together and develop; it will be slightly towards the more modern key thanks to the ripeness of the fruit, and will age well for a decade or more.
2 stars

Vietti Lazzaritto Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflection sand almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and somewhat smoky, with hints of gum Arabic and quite a bit of alcohol too; there are also savory accents, but there's not much fruit. On the palate it's a bit riper than the nose suggests, with moderately intense rather mineral plum fruit supported more by minerality than acidity, and by tannins that flow into a rather mineral finish that gradually settles. I'd have liked more richness and acidity to the fruit, which is a bit too settled, and will only settle further with time.
1 star

Pira Luigi Margheria Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly closed, with some mineral accents and slight cedar with some alcohol as well, but not much fruit at present. On the palate it's full, and quite mineral, with minerality more than fruit supported by tannins that are rather splintery, and flow into a rather tannic mineral finish with a distinctly splintery burr. There's not as much fruit as I might like; minerality can be interesting, but as a supporting actor in Barolo, not a protagonist.
1 star

Caretto Bricco Rocche Prapò Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, and rather penetrating, with metallic notes that fade with swishing to reveal musty dried orange peel and some berry fruit with some underlying spice; the wood isn't quite as clean as it could have been. On the palate it's spicy, with moderately intense plum fruit supported by minerality and tannins that have a considerable peppery burr and flow into a fierily long plum laced finish with peppery tannic underpinning and some minerality. I'd have liked more cleanliness to the nose.
1 star

Germano Ettore Prapò Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with spicy berry fruit supported by some bell pepper jam and a certain sunniness; it's quite fresh and there are also savory accents that provide increased depth. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit that has slight plum accents and is supported by bright berry fruit acidity with some sea salt, and flows into a clean bright berry fruit finish with tannic underpinning that has some vegetal accents too. It's rather cheeky, the first Barolo of the day I might say that of; it will age nicely in a bright middle of the road key, and though one could drink it with a steak now I would give it at least a couple of years.
2 stars

We Finish up with a few 2005 Barolo Riserva wines: There were too many for me to taste them all in the time allotted, so I selected, skimming the list.

2005 was a vintage I didh't particularly like when it was released -- the vintage was cool and wet, with problems in ripening, and the basic Barolo reflected this -- but as is often the case with Riserva wines, the more careful selection in the vineyard had a quite positive impact upon the wines, in the order tasted:

Elvio Cogno Vigna Elena Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005 Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is elegant, with some sour berry fruit supported by savory notes and slight leaf tobacco, and hints of rosa canina as well; it's quite young but shows considerable depth and promise. On the palate it's again young, and full, with rich cherry fruit supported by fairly bright berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that have a warm peppery burr, and flow into a long rather savory finish with nice tannic underpinning and some sour berry fruit; I'm still typing and it's still continuing, fading into pepperiness. Beautiful, and just barely beginning to come into its own; one could drink it now with a roast or steak, but I would hold it another 3-5 years, and expect it to age well for perhaps 10 -- it's not the most ageworthy vintage, but this is a very fine expression of it, and if you like the style, which is fairly traditional, you will enjoy it very much. Even if you're modernist you'll find things to think about.
92-94

Castello di Verduno Monvigliero Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is intense, and quite fresh, with red berry fruit supported by barest hints of leaf tobacco and rosa canina, with some sour berry fruit acidity too, and moderate alcohol with greenish vegetal accents with hints of water-based tempera paints of the kind I used as a child. It seems younger than 2005. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by tannins that have a dusky burr and flow into a fairly dry tannic finish with some savory underpinning and moderately intense berry fruit acidity. It's younger and more vigorous than some, with tannins that are still quite precocious and spicy, and need more time -- 3-5 years at least -- to begin to settle and come into their own. Fortunately the fruit is also bright and young, so they should have this time. It's a wine that revolves more around vigor than subtlety, and short of very long aging, is better suited to being served with succulent meats than to being meditated over.
2 stars

Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, with red berry fruit supported by delicate cedar and some greenish vegetal notes, and as it opens some hints of berry fruit jam. Pleasing and graceful. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by minerality and graphite shaving bitterness more than acidity, and by warmth, while the tannins are ample and smooth with some peppery accents, and flow into a fairly long savory finish with sour berry fruit and tannic underpinning. Pleasant in a vigorous key, and a wine to be drunk with foods in the short term because there is a greenish cedar-laced warmth to the tannins that will match perfectly with rich red meats along the lines of roasted leg of lamb, while it should also smooth nicely with time, though I think the greenish vegetal notes (which can occur in Nebbiolo, especially in cooler vintages) will remain.
90-91

Cavallotto Tenuta Bricco Boschis Riserva Vignolo Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is powerful and quite young, with greenish cedary accents and a fair amount of chalk laced supported by quite a bit of alcohol; it's a colossus emerging from the glass, and gives an impression of being rather rough hewn as of yet -- the finishing touches haven't been affixed, and in particular the fruit is still working on coming together. As it opens, however, some leaf tobacco and slight leather with bitter accents do emerge. On the palate it's a bit further along, with powerful dusky sour berry fruit supported by minerality and some acidity, and by tannins that have a strong dusky greenish burr, and flow into a long sour berry fruit finish with greenish tannic underpinning. It's a big wine, like a weightlifter who also practices ballet, but is also really not quite ready yet; the fruit that stands proudly in the palate needs to work its way into the nose, and I would give it another 2-3 years to do that. If you must drink it now, however, it will work well with succulent roasts. Stinco, veal shank, comes to mind.
2 stars

Cascina del Monastero Bricco Riund Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful and enticing; you want more. Of red berry fruit supported by some leather and slight leaf tobacco that gains with intensity as the wine opens, and delicate spice with warmth and some alcohol, and hints of cedar as well. Quite fresh, though it is beginning to come into its own. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with rich cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have some leaf tobacco accents, and dusky overtones, and flow into a long warm slightly sour berry fruit finish. The palate isn't quite as rich as the nose, but displays pleasing grace and considerable subtlety that's destined to increase with time -- at present the tannin are still folding in, and have slight cedary notes that will fade; it doesn't have the vibrancy of some of the others but will I think do interesting things with time, and be a wine to converse with.
88-90

Azienda Agricola Giacomo Fenocchio Bussia Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to leathery orange. The bouquet is muted at first swish, though as it opens some berry fruit and minerality emerge and also greenish vegetal accents and some spice. It's like coaxing a cat from her hidey-hole; with more swishing the spice increases, while leaf tobacco mingled with green leather also emerge followed reluctantly by greenish accents and sea salt. Harmonious. On the palate it's full, with rich sour cherry and forest berry fruit supported by warm berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are ample and rather splintery, with some bitter accents, and flow into a clean greenish tannic finish that continues at length, gradually resolving into vegetal notes and some spice with tannic underpinning. It's very young, a toddler at best, and though you could drink it now with a roast or stew it will reward those who have patience because the potential is there in abundance; it will show considerably better in 3-5 years than it does now.
88-90

Massolino Vigna Rionda Barolo Riserva DOCG 2005

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with some leaf tobacco and green leather mingled with berry fruit and spice; it's not completely closed but brings to mind a child peeping from around a corner; more swishing brings up some savory accents and slight truffles with some underbrush followed by hints of wood smoke and bitterness. On the palate it's full, and rich, with fairly bright mineral-laced berry fruit supported by sour mineral acidity and smooth sweet tannins that flow into a fairly long mineral finish with deft tannic underpinning from grapes. Quite elegant but really not ready; it needs another couple of years for everything to come together and will age nicely for a decade at least thereafter. By comparison with some of the others it is more mineral, and this is the expression of the land in a cooler wetter vintage.

The 2007 Barolo: Wines from La Morra and Monforte

Looking specifically at La Morra and Monforte, overall I found the wines from La Morra to be better balanced and display greater elegance than those of Monforte, though as is always the case there is considerable variation and the style of the winemaker also comes into play.

Wines From La Morra Francone Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is bright, with lively vegetal accents and greenish spice supporting brambly sour berry fruit. On the palate it's rich, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by bright berry fruit acidity and tannins that are fairly rich and flow into a smooth slightly bitter tannic finish. Pleasant in a rich bracing key, with considerable power and considerable youth; it's drinkable but will also age very well.

Azienda Agricola Silvio Grasso Ciabot Manzoni Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is intense, with a fair amount of cedar supported by greenish bitter accents and spice, but not much fruit. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright cherry fruit supported by moderate berry fruit acidity that has a dusky cast, and by tannins that are cedar laced and flow into a fairly dry tannic finish. Pleasant in an international key, and very young; it needs another year for the nose to develop and the tannins to fold in; I would expect it to age well for a decade or more thereafter.

I Bastioni I Bastioni Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fresh, with rich floral accents, violets and rosa canina with some leaf tobacco and slight sea salt, and underlying berry fruit. Nice balance and rather graceful. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich red berry fruit supported by moderate sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a dusky leathery component, and flow into a dusky finish with berry fruit and alcohol laced with cedar. Pleasant in a young muscular key, and quite young; I would give the wine a couple of years for the tannins to fall into place.

Tenuta L'Illuminata Tebavio Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, with sour berry fruit supported by fairly bright sour berry fruit acidity and some leather, with slight cedary accents. Quite fresh, and a lot going on. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by fairly rich berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a slight burr and flow into a fairly long sour berry fruit finish with tannic underpinning. Very young, and with the brashness of youth, but will clean up nicely in the space of a couple of years, and age well for a decade or more thereafter.

Rambaldi Vladimiro Il Lauro Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly intense and greenish, with pronounced vegetal accents and supported by violets, spice, nutmeg in particular, and sour cherry fruit. Quite young, but displays pleasingly bracing vigor. On the palate it's a bit soften than I expected from the nose, with ample bright sour berry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth and somewhat blocky, with a youthful cedary burr (new large wood?) and flow into a long sour berry fruit finish. It's a bit behind, and needs a year for the tannins to smooth and fold in, at which point it will be pleasant in a middle of the road key.
2 stars

Aurelio Settimo Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is extreme, with balsamic acidity and savoriness that brings bouillon to mind supported by some sour berry fruit and some sea salt. On the palate it's languid, with tobacco laced sour cherry fruit supported by balsamic acidity and smooth sweet tannins that flow into a long balsam-laced sour berry fruit finish. It's particular, in a very traditional but not rustic key, and if you like the style you will enjoy it considerably. But you have to like the style; if you're of more modern persuasions it simply won't work for you. It speaks across time, and if you want to talk it's interesting.

Ciabot Berton Ciabot Berton Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with green leather and spice supporting leaf tobacco and berry fruit, and some dusky bitter accents and slight animal tang that adds depth, while there is also some black pepper. On the palate it's ample and smooth with moderately rich cherry plum fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that are rather blocky and a bit drier than I expected, laying a veneer over the tongue and flowing into a fairly dry tannic finish. It's a little flatter than I expected, with the fruit not quite as rich, while the tannins are still out of whack; it needs at least a year for them to settle in.

Vigneti Luigi Oddero e Figli Barolo DOCG 2007

Lively almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to leathery orange. The bouquet is powerful, and quite young, with spice and wet green leather mingled with greenish accents and spice, and also sea salt, while there is also some berry fruit. On the palate it's ample and languid, with moderately intense fairly generic plum berry fruit that has some sweetness related likely to alcohol, and is supported by mineral more than fruit driven acidity, and by tannins that are rather splintery and flow into a fairly bitter tannic finish with mineral underpinning. I'd have liked greater richness of fruit, which is a bit flat, while the tannins are at present strident. It needs at least a year for the tannins to fold in, but the fruit will never gain brightness nor acidity.
1 star

Azienda Agricola Mario Marengo Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some cedar and savory accents with some alcohol; not much fruit. On the palate it's brighter than the nose suggests on the outset, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity that gamely battles past cedar laced tannins to express itself, and though the tannins do manage to draw it back the acidity remains, and flows into a warm cedar-laced tannic finish with a sour berry fruit underpinning. It's pleasant though something of a work in progress, and will be nice in an international key when it has absorbed the tannins, in a year or two. If you like the style you will enjoy it, but give it time because at present it's unfinished.

Azienda Agricola Crissante Alessandria Galina Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with petroleum-laced berry fruit supported by spice and vegetal notes that have some hints of Sichuan preserved vegetable to them, with a fair amount of alcohol and some mineral acidity. On the palate it's full, with moderately intense berry fruit laced with leaf tobacco and mineral more than fruit driven acidity, and supported by tannins that have a dry splintery burr and flow into a dry tannic finish. It's heavily oaked, perhaps too heavily for the fruit, though time will tell; I would give it a couple of years for the tannins to fold in and smooth, because at present they're simply too strong.

Azienda Agricola Mario Gagliasso Torriglione Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to leathery orange. The bouquet is rich, with powerful sour cherry fruit supported by some greenish vegetal notes and fairly intense alcohol, and also some leaf tobacco and slight rosa canina. On the palate it's fairly bright, with rich rather dusky cherry fruit supported by moderate berry fruit acidity and some bitterness, and by tannins that are warm and have a greenish tinge to them, combined with alcoholic warmth and sweetness that carries into the finish, which also ahs slight cedar accents. It's powerful, and very young, a muscular wine that needs another couple of years to come together. If you're looking for finesse it's not here now, though what it does bring to the table will work very well with a steak.

San Biagio Rocchettevino Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is languid, with sweet mentholated plum fruit supported by greenish accents and wet leather with some Sichuan preserved vegetable as well. Enticing. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by alcoholic sweetness and moderate mineral acidity, while the tannins are broad and quite smooth, with slight savory accents, and flow into a clean savory finish with spicy savory more than tannic underpinning. It's riper than I expected, and also a bit flatter; more acidity would have been nice because its lack translates into a settled feel.

Eraldo Viberti Rocchettevino Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and fairly orange rim. Looks older than 2007. The bouquet is fairly rich, with savory notes and slightly jammy berry fruit supported by nutmeg and some rosa canina, with slight hints of jam as well. On the palate it's fairly rich on the outset, with bright slightly mineral sour cherry fruit supported by mineral acidity and by tannins that are smooth and massive, with some leaf tobacco and cedar overtones, and gradually eclipse the fruit, leading into a tannic finish with mineral acidity and some sweetness from alcohol. The nose was promising but I'd have liked more verve and depth from the palate, where the tannins run the show.

Renato Ratti Conca Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, with a mixture of greenish herbals accents notes and chalk that brings to mind the finger paints I had as a child, and peppery spice with savory overtones; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, and surprisingly minty with some other herbs as well -- a touch of oregano -- mingled with berry fruit and supported by moderate acidity and tannins that are quite smooth and flow into a fairly long warm finish. It's a bit unusual, but also quite young; the tannins need another year at least to smooth and come together.
2 stars

Cascina Ballarin Bricco Rocca Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense and vinous, with rich cherry fruit supported by balsam-laced spice and acidity that tingles the nose. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by savory cherry fruit acidity and tannins that are ample and have a slight burr, and flow into a clean fresh berry fruit finish. It's a touch light, though this is also youth, because the tannins have yet to integrate and support convincingly; but pleasant in a rather cheeky fruit driven key. I'd give it a year to get its bearings, and expect it to age well for 10-15 years thereafter.
2 stars

Ciabot Berton Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with plum berry fruit supported by rosa canina and wet leather, and pleasant savory spice with a warm balsamic underpinning as well. On the palate it's full, with fairly bright ripe cherry fruit supported by peppery spice and tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do display a slight savory burr, and flow into a clean bright berry fruit finish. Quite pleasant in a fairly traditional key; it's quite young, and needs at least a year to develop and for the tannins to smooth, but will be worth waiting for, I think, and will also continue to age well for a decade or more.
2 stars

Casetta F.lli Vigna Case Nere Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, in a rather balsamic key; it opens with a whiff of hazelnut that resolves into balsam-laced berry fruit with a savory underpinning that also has some cumin to it and a fair amount of spice, and as it opens further some mentholated accents. On the palate it's ample and riper than I expected, with plum cherry fruit supported by fairly bright mineral acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, and flow into a rather sweet plum laced finish. Pleasant in a riper key, and if you like the style you will enjoy it.
2 stars

Stroppiana Oreste Azienda Agricola Vigna san Giacomo Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense and greenish, with quite a bit of alcohol supporting menthol and savory notes mingled with shellac and almost artichoke stems. Angry, and not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit that has some plum accents, and is supported by tannins that are ample and rather blocky, flowing into a cedar laced finish with fairly long savory warmth and some plum accents. It's up in the air, and needs time; in terms of style it's quite ripe and quite international; it's also quite young, and needs at least a year -- two would be better for the tannins to fold in and meld with the fruit.
2 stars

Eugenio Bocchino La Serra Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and leathery orange rim. The bouquet is powerful and fairly sweet, with jammy fruit laced with hints of rock candy and peppery spice with an herbal underpinning. On the palate it's ample and ripe, with bright cherry plum fruit supported by deft acidity and by tannins that are sweet and have a slight cedar overlay to them, and flow into a warm plum laced tannic finish. Quite pleasant in an international key; it needs a year to get its bearings, but will then drink nicely with drier meats, ranging from roast beef cooked medium rare through roast rabbit stuffed with prunes. If you like the style you will enjoy it.
2 stars

Bosco Agostino La Serra Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit supported by spice and slight milky notes, and an underpinning of cedar and dusky accents that brings dappled shade do mind. Nice depth. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour berry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are heading towards smoothness though they're not there yet -- a distinctly youthful burr flows into a fairly long bright finish savory. Pleasant, but needs time, a year at least -- two would be better -- and will age beautifully for many more thereafter.

Massimo Penna Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling overtones orange. The bouquet is fairly rich, with leathery berry fruit supported by quite a bit of alcohol and some underlying leaf tobacco and peppery spice. Nice depth, though very young. On the palate it's full, and fairly sweet, with jammy cherry plum fruit supported by moderate spicy mineral acidity and by tannins that are warm and greenish, with a slight burr. It's middle of the road in key, though leaning to the international side of the aisle.
2 stars

Marcarini La Serra Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and orange rim. The bouquet is eye opening, with leather and raw beef that's been left in the sun at the outset, and quickly gives way to wood smoke with sweet peppery vegetal accents that almost bring relish to mind, and cumin-cardamom spice as well. Unusual. On the palate it's more noremal, with sour red berry fruit supported by moderately intense sour berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are fairly smooth and flow into a long warm tannic finish with sour berry fruit underpinning. The nose is like a person who is having "one of those days," and will likely clean up over the next year, at which point it will be elegant in a middle of the road key.
2 stars

Voerzio Alberto La Serra Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and spicy, with wet green leather supported by sea salt and peppery spice with some savory notes as well. Not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, with moderately intense sour berry fruit supported by mineral more than fruit driven acidity, and by tannins that are ample and have a cedary underpinning, flowing into a rather dry cedary finish. I'd have liked more depth and richness to the fruit, which is retiring with respect to the tannins and lets them carry the show.

Azienda Agricola Silvio Grasso Bricco Luciani Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep pyrope with black reflections and cherry rim. One of the darkest wines of the week. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit supported by vegetal accents and greenish spice with slight sweetish notes and black pepper that adds a certain zestiness. On the palate it's full and quite smooth in a very international style, with powerful plum cherry fruit supported by slightly greenish acidity and tannins that have a warm cedary burr and flow into a fairly long bright tannic finish with lively fairly sweet fruit underpinning and a degree of alcoholic warmth as well. It's elegant in a rich international key and very young; one could drink it now with a steak, but it will reward those who have the patience to give it a few more years.
2 stars

Cascina del Monastero Bricco Luciani Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, and spicy, with a strong greenish vegetal tang and quite a bit of alcohol; there's also some tartness but not much fruit. On the palate it's ample and somewhat sweet, with the sweetness deriving from alcohol, and with greenish plum cherry fruit that's rather ripe, and also rather short, dispensing with the assistance of acidity and settling quickly into a solid tannic finish. I'd have liked more length, though this may come with time. At present it's quite young.
1 star

Cordero di Montezemolo - Monfalletto Bricco Gattera Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and rather sweet, with berry fruit supported by cedar and some leaf tobacco with slight hints of shellac and sea salt as well. On the palate it's ample, with cherry plum fruit supported by some minerality and quite a bit of alcohol, which confers sweetness, and by tannins that have a peppery burr and flow into a fairly long finish with alcohol and some plum. The fruit is a touch shorter than I might have liked, giving way to warmth and tannins; there's also a lot of alcohol, which makes it rather extreme.

Azienda Agricola Gianfranco Bovio Gattera Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is intense, with wet leather mingled with vegetal notes -- towards artichoke stems -- and sea salt, and some petroleum as well. Not much fruit. On the palate it's ripe, with fairly rich plum fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are young and have a cedary burr, and flow into a fairly long plum laced tannic finish. The palate is further along than the nose, which is working though issues; assuming that when it does it follows the palate it will be pleasant in a fairly international and quite ripe key. But at present it's up in the air.

Michele Chiarlo Cerequio Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with alcohol and greenish spice mingled with berry fruit and some wet leather, cedar, and also slight scalded milk that is I think youthful wood-fruit interaction. On the palate it's brighter than I expected, with fairly lively sour cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that have an angry hot cedary burr and flow into a warm spicy finish with considerable black pepper. It's like someone who has bounced into the air and is flailing; it needs at least a year for the tannins to settle, and at that point will be towards the international side of the spectrum. If you like the style you will enjoy it, but give it the time it needs.

Mauro Veglio Vigneto Arborina Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to leathery orange. The bouquet is fairly rich, with greenish notes mingled with red berry fruit and some berry fruit acidity and some underlying spice with alcohol as well; it displays pleasing youthful vigor. On the palate it's bright, with cherry plum fruit supported by dusky graphite shaving bitterness and savory accents, and by tannins that are fairly smooth but do have a peppery burr, and flow into a clean rather bitter berry fruit finish with peppery tannic underpinning. It's very young, and needs at least a year to come together and settle, but will be pleasant in a powerful middle of the road key.

Azienda Agricola Bovio Gianfranco Arborina Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, and penetrating, with spicy notes and some wet leather; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's brighter than expected, with fairly rich cherry fruit that displays hints of plum, and is supported by fairly bright berry fruit acidity, while the tannins are smooth and flow into a fairly bright sour berry fruit finish. The nose needs a year but the palate promises well, and it should turn out nicely in a rather powerful middle of the road key, a wine to drink with a roast rather than meditate over, at least in the short term, though the future may reserve surprises.

Aurelio Settimo Rocche dell'Annunziata Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is powerful, and rather animal, with wet horse and some stable straw (mucked from the stable and sitting in the sun) laced with balsamic acidity and spice that has some savory accents. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth and flow into a clean peppery finish with underlying sea salt and berry fruit acidity that's fairly long. The nose is particular, and you will like it or not; though it will develop (considerably) with time its character is I think set. If you like the style it's fairly rich, and will drink well with grilled meats or roasts, and will also age nicely for a decade or more.

Renato Ratti Rocche Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with cherry plum fruit supported by dusky graphite shavings and some cedar with hints of gun Arabic, and slight sea salt and spice. On the palate it's ample and quite ripe, with plum fruit supported by mineral more than fruit driven acidity, and by tannins that are ample, and flow into a plum laced cedary tannic finish. It's quite ripe, and rather soft, with the tannins carrying more than the acidity, and this will likely continue throughout the wine's life; I would have liked greater richness of fruit, which is eclipsed by the tannins.

Rocche Costamagna Rocche dell'Annunziata Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is moderately intense, and penetrating, with peppery spice and some scalded milk and oak. On the palate it's decidedly tannic, with moderate fruit that gives way to bitterness and blocky tannins that coat the tongue, and flow into a fairly bright tannic finish with some berry fruit acidity. Too much wood and it overshadows the fruit, at least now.

Azienda Agricola Andrea Oberto Vigneto Rocche Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some plum fruit and a fair amount of cedar that has a greenish spicy overlay. On the palate it's full, with plum prune fruit that emerges at the outset, but is then overshadowed by the tannins, which are ample and cedar laced; direction comes from slight minerality, while there isn't much in the way of acidity, and this makes sense give the ripeness of the fruit. It needs at least a year to come together and develop, and will only work for you if you like big soft wines that are quite ripe, and low in acidity.

Azienda Agricola Mario Gagliasso Rocche dell'Annunziata Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, with sour berry fruit supported by greenish accents and some peppery spice and a fair amount of cedar. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry plum fruit supported by peppery tannins than considerable spice more than acidity, though there is some, and it flows into a fairly long peppery finish with tannic underpinning. It's pleasant in a ripe key though very young, and needs a year for the nose to develop and the tannins to settle; if you like the style you will enjoy it. If you prefer tighter wines with brighter acidities it will work less well for you.

Ceretto Bricco Rocche Brunate Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is smoky, with some penetrating spice and some sea salt. Not much fruit. On the palate it's a bit brighter than I expected, with moderately intense sour berry fruit that has some plum accents, and is supported by savory berry fruit acidity and tannins that have a warm cedary burr, and flow into a warm rather long greenish tannic finish with some peppery accents. It's quite young, and needs a year to come together; this said, it's strongly oaked but not overripe, and may do interesting things; though it soon to say; at present it's really not interested in anyone else.

Vietti Brunate Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense and decidedly green, with a fair amount of cedar and spice, with warmth, but not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, with plum fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that are ample and display a splintery burr and flow into a plum laced mineral tannic finish. It needs another couple of years to come together and for the tannins to smooth, at which point it will be quite ripe, though not that soft -- the tannins are powerful.

Damilano Brunate Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense and penetrating, with greenish accents and slight acidity supported by delicate red berry fruit acidity and some gum Arabic. On the palate it's fairly rich, with berry fruit supported by dusky sweet (sweetness form alcohol) tannins and some minerality that flow into a fairly mineral finish with spicy underpinning. There isn't as much fruit as I might have liked; it bows out quickly to allow the tannins and spice to carry the show, and this penalizes the wine.

Azienda Agricola Andrea Oberto Vigneto Brunate Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish accents mingled with cedar and some, though not too much berry plum fruit. On the palate it's full, with plum fruit supported by some mineral acidity, and by tannins that are smooth and flow into a plum laced finish. It's quite ripe, and still working through the tannins, that owe much of their essence to wood; this said it's not really soft, and if you like ample ripe wines you will enjoy it, though it does need another couple of years to get its bearings.

Wines from Monforte D'Alba Cascina Chicco Rocche di Castelletto Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and pale almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up slight cedar and greenish accents. Nobody home. On the palate it's fairly bright, with cherry fruit supported by moderately intense cherry acidity, and by tannins that have a warm splintery burr and flow into a fairly bright fresh sour cherry finish. Pleasant, though it needs a couple of years to come together and get its feet under it; when it does it will be fairly traditional in feel, and if you like the style you will enjoy it.

Silvano Bolmida Vigna dei Fantini Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is powerful, and rather animal, with savory balsamic accents and lathered horse mingled with warmth and some wet stable straw. On the palate it's ample and languid, with balsam-laced savory berry fruit supported by moderately intense balsamic acidity and by tannins that have a warm slightly greenish balsamic burr, and flow into a fairly long spicy finish. It's quite traditional in a moderately powerful, and if you like the style you will enjoy it, especially if you prefer wines that tend towards finesse. If you prefer wines that are more modern in style it won't work as well for you.

Pecchenino San Giuseppe Barolo DOCG 2007

Pale almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is delicate with leather and rosa canina mingled with some leaf tobacco and spice; it's young, but promising and harmonious. On the palate it's ample, and more mineral than fruit driven, with dry minerality supported by tannins that are decidedly blocky and flow into a very tannic finish with savory spicy notes. A bit of a disappointment; I'd have liked more fruit and acidity, neither of which is really sufficient.

Azienda Agricola Marziano Abbona Pressenda Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and pale almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with menthol and some spice supporting greenish vegetal accents; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's fairly bright, with a mineral attack that gives way to sour berry fruit and sour berry fruit acidity supported by tannins that are smooth and flow into a fairly long tannic finish with dusky butter underpinning. It's quite traditional, and if you prefer wines that are more fruit driven it won't work for you. However, if you like the style you will enjoy it, and it will do interesting things with time.

Elio Grasso Gavarini Chiniera Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. the bouquet is muted; swishing brings up some sea salt and spice, but not much else. On the palate it's fairly bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by warmth and sour berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are full and glancing, flowing into a warm tannic finish with slight cedar. It's very young and the nose needs at least a year to be presentable; as it stands it is wondering about having been bottled and gives an impression of a person curled up in a ball. If the nose follows the palate (and the palate calms down) it will be (quite) pleasant, but that's not today.

Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Vigna D'La Roul Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black am with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish accents and some vegetable notes whose interaction brings yellow peaches to mind, and also slight chalk and cedar. On the palate it's full and rather bitter, with moderately intense berry-plum fruit supported by minerality, slight sweetness from alcohol, and tannins that are decidedly oaky, and flow into a cedar laced finish. A lot of oak, and this coupled with the soft ripeness of the fruit and a relative lack of acidity makes for a fairly flat wine.

Monti Duemilasette Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense and fairly bright, with jammy berry fruit supported by greenish accents and some spicy notes. Rich in a vibrantly youthful key. On the palate it's bright, with sour cherry fruit supported by moderately intense sour cherry acidity and by tannins that have a cedary sweetish cast and flow into a fairly long slightly greenish berry fruit finish. It's young, in a rather muscular key, and needs at least a year to come together and for the tannins to smooth; it will work well with red meats and such and perhaps be better suited to foods than meditation.

Josetta Saffirio Persiera Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep pigeon blood ruby with black reflections and some almandine in the rim; it's quite dark. The bouquet is somewhat out of sorts, with some ripe berry fruit supported by some cedar, and also9 by musty dried orange peel, and some savory spice. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense plum fruit acidity, and by tannins that are fresh and fairly smooth, flowing into a greenish vegetal laced finish with tannic underpinning. It's middle of the road in key, tending slightly to ripeness, and needs another year at least for the tannins to smooth and come together.

Mauro Veglio Castelletto Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fresh and a bit disjointed, with ripe berry fruit supported by sweetish notes and cedar that combine to create something that brings crisp apples to mind. A bit unusual, and a feature of youth. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderately intense fruit supported by tannins that have a peppery spicy burr and flow into a fairly long peppery finish. I'd have liked greater intensity of fruit and brighter acidity, because it's a bit settled.

On the palate it's brighter than the nose suggests, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and tannins that have a warm thoughtful burr and flow into a fairly long tannic finish with sour berry fruit underpinning. The nose is behind the palate, which isn't that far along either; it needs another year or perhaps two to get its bearings and come together, at which point I would expect it to be more towards the traditional side of the scale, and age well for many years.

Podere Ruggeri Corsini San Pietro Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense and sweet, with dusky jammy berry fruit and some vegetal accents supported by a fair amount of alcohol and some cedar. On the palate it's ample and again fairly sweet -- more a touch of residual sugar than alcohol -- with jammy berry fruit supported by plum fruit sweetness and moderate plum acidity, and by tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do reveal a peppery burr, and flow into a fairly tannic finish with a greenish underpinning. It's young in an ample ripe but not overripe key, and if you like the style you will enjoy it, though it you prefer more tightly woven wines with brighter acidities you will find it a bit lax.

Diego Conterno Le Coste Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful and quite cedar-laced, with intense greenish cedary accents and very little else; it's like sniffing a barrel. On the palate it's full, with moderate minerality that fruit, which then gives way to terrific greenish cedar that carries through into a cedar laced finish. Lots of oak, and it covers most everything.
1 star

Pecchenino Le Coste Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with back reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, and fairly sweet, with jammy red berry and plum fruit supported by some mentholated accents and ripe squeezed yellow peaches, which can occur in young Nebbiolo, with slight underlying cedar. On the palate it's ample and fairly soft, with the softness coming from sweetness, with plum cherry fruit supported by bitter minerality more than acidity, and by tannins that flow into a fairly long rather bitter tannic finish. It's ample and ripe, but the tannins need another year to come together. If you like the style you will like it, but if you prefer tighter wines with richer acidities it won't work as well for you.

Manzone Giovanni Gramolere Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly intense, with sweetness mingled with cedar and some berry fruit and slight shellac. It gives an impression of a fair amount of oak. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with moderately intense red berry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fairly soft finish; there isn't much acidity, and therefore the tannins end up carrying the show, and though they make a good go of it, acidity is much more interesting.
1 star

Alessandria Fratelli Gramolere Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish notes mingled with red berry fruit and some leaf tobacco, and some sea salt as well. It has a certain airiness to it. On the palate it's ripe, with cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense plum acidity and tannins that have a peppery greenish burr and flow into a peppery tannic finish with a long greenish underpinning that gradually reveals sour berry fruit as well. It's fairly aggressive, thanks overtones the tannins, and needs another year to get its bearings; I would expect it to age nicely in a fairly direct middle of the road key,
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Oreste Stroppiana Gabutti Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and decidedly vegetal, with berry fruit and jammy accents mingled with hints of grilled sausage -- one writes what one perceives. On the palate it's fairly bright, with fresh cherry and forest berry fruit supported by some plum sweetness, and by tannins that are smooth and flow into a clean fresh berry fruit finish. It needs a year or two, and will drink well with roasts or stews. Direct in youth.
2 stars

Prunotto Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with greenish vegetal notes mingled with some red berry fruit and slight animal tang, and as it opens plum jam made with a piece of lemon rind. On the palate it's ample and soft, with cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense plum acidity, and by tannins that are smooth and savory, and flow into a fairly long savory finish. A big wine that's ripe but not overripe, and does have some acidity to provide direction; if you like the style you will like it, but if you prefer tighter wines with richer acidities it won't work as well for you.
2 stars

Podere Ruggeri Corsini Corsini Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly intense, and markedly vegetal, with greenish notes and spice and some sea salt, but not much fruit. On the palate it's quite ripe, with a touch of sweetness that comes with this degree of ripeness, and plum fruit supported by some plum acidity, and by tannins that are ample and smooth, and flow into a clean fairly bright plum finish with tannic underpinning. It's big but not settled, and if you like the style you will enjoy it. But you have to like the style; if you prefer tighter wines with richer acidities it won't work as well for you.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Franco Conterno Cascina Sciulun Bussia Munie Barolo DOCG 2007

Impenetrable pyrope with black reflections and almandine rim. Very dark. The bouquet is powerful and jammy with plum fruit supported by some acidity and some cedar; considerable concentration to it in a very ripe key. On the palate it's ample and very smooth, with rich plum fruit supported by savory notes and minerality more than acidity, and by tannins that are ample and a touch drier than I expected, flowing into a long rather dusky plum finish. Very ripe, in a big soft key, and if you like the style you will enjoy it. If you prefer tighter, brighter wines you won't.
1 star

Giacosa Fratelli Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007
Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with quite a bit of greenish cedar mingled with some spice and slight sweetness; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's full, with jammy plum fruit supported more by minerality than acidity, and by tannins that are ample and smooth, with some cedar to them. It's a big soft expression of Barolo and in this context is well made. If you prefer wines that are brighter and have more acidity and verve it won't work for you.
1 star

Poderi Colla Dardi le Rose Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with greenish cedar mingled with herbal notes and some spice, and also some scalded milk that is wood-fruit interaction. Not much fruit, though there are hints of plum. On the palate it's ample, with savory plum fruit supported by considerable graphite shaving bitterness and tannins that have a dusky bitter cast to them, and flow into a bitter tannic finish. Ample power, and ripe fruit, without much acidity; the result is big and soft, and if you like the style you will enjoy it. I found myself wanting less ripeness and more verve.
1 star

Silvano Bolmida Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and spicy, with berry fruit supported by greenish accents that somehow bring nettles to mind, and cedar and wood smoke as well. On the palate it's bright, with berry fruit that's much more sour than I expected, supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are tremendously oaky, and lay a veneer over the palate, thus leading into a long green finish. Too much oak for me, and while it will fold in with time I doubt it will ever fold in enough.
1 star

Barale Fratelli Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007
Impenetrable pyrope with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with spice and some cedar and slight savory notes, but not much fruit. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with rich plum cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do display a slight burr. The nose needs another year to come together, but it's pleasant in an ample fairly ripe key, with sufficient acidity to have direction, and fruit that is quite ripe but not overripe and soft. If you like the style you will enjoy it.
2 stars

Cascina Ballarin Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007
Impenetrable pyrope with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful -- it emerges form the glass without swishing -- and cedary with some plum prune fruit that manages to escape from under the blanket of oak, but not much. On the palate it's full, with rich fairly sweet plum fruit supported by moderately intense acidity (that I didn't expect) and by smooth cedar laced tannins that flow into a warm finish with some plum accents, and slight mineral acidity. It's big, very ripe, and very smooth, and if you like the style you will enjoy it. If you are more traditionally minded it won't work for you.
2 stars

Parusso Armando di Parusso F.lli Bussia Barolo DOCG 2007
Pyrope. Poured ink. The bouquet is powerful, with rich prune cherry fruit laced with fresh cut ripe peaches and cedar, mingled with menthol as well. Tremendous concentration and one could cut it with a fork. On the palate it's full and powerful, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have a very strong spicy burr and flow into a long spicy berry fruit finish. It's a big wine well polished and heavily oaked, and takes no quarter -- either you like the style or you don't. If you do, give the tannins a year to get their bearings, and drink it with drier meats.
2 stars

Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Vigna Cappella di Santo Stefano Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. Quite charged. The bouquet is intense, with greenish berry fruit that doesn't quite manage yellow peaches but is in that direction, and a fair amount of underlying cedar. On the palate it's ample and smooth, but brighter than I expected on the outset, with cherry plum fruit that emerges blinking owlishly and is then snatched back by angry splintery cedar laced tannins that carry into a long warm cedar laced finish. A lot of new wood here, and it overshadows the grapes at present, and will likely continue to do so in the future.
1 star

Parusso Armando di Parusso F.lli Le Coste Mosconi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is interesting, with slight berry fruit supported by savory cedar in a combination that brings to mind wet stable straw at the first swish, and then opens further to reveal vegetal accents and peppery spice. Quite charged, and the other elements come to overshadow the fruit. On the palate it's brighter than one might have expected though still in the ripe to overripe category, with smoky cherry plum fruit that emerges briefly, and is supported by tannins that are powerfully cedar laced and flow into a fairly long cedar laced finish with some plum fruit. Ample, with soft fruit and quite a bit of tannic support in large part from wood. If you like the style you will like it, but if you prefer tighter wines with richer acidities it won't work for you. It's a little too young to score.

The 2007 Barolo: Wines from Novello, Roddi, Verduno, Castiglione Falletto, and Barolo

Wines from Novello

Azienda Agricola Giribaldi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some berry fruit and slight rosa canina mingled with some balsamic notes and slight hints of sweetness. On the palate it's full and smooth, with fairly powerful slightly balsamic berry fruit supported by balsam laced acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a fairly long tannic finish with a balsamic underpinning and lasting warmth. I'd have liked a little more brightness to the acidity, which is a touch settled. This said, it is quite approachable and pleasingly smooth and rich.
2 stars

Piazzo Armando Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is quite young, with deft rosa canina mingled with spice and slight sweet accents, and also with pleasant greenish leaf tobacco accents. Nice depth, though it's very young. On the palate it's elegant, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and smooth steely tannins that flow into a fairly long rather tannic finish. It's elegant in an approachable key, and though I'm not sure how long lived it will be quite pleasant in the short term (less than a decade) and add considerably to a meal built around a steak or a roast.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Abbona Marziano Tario Ravera Barolo DOCG

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with balsam-laced rosa canina and spice mingled with Moroccan leather and some pungent spice. On the palate it's ample, with moderately intense rather mineral fruit supported by peppery spice and tannins that are rather peppery, and flow into a clean peppery finish. It's approachable, but a touch settled, and I found myself wishing for brighter acidity than it displays. This said, it's very young, and needs time to come together and develop.
2 stars

Rattalino Trentacinque35 Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, with berry fruit laced with balsamic notes and animal tang with a fair amount of alcohol as well; there's a dusky brooding quality to it that is in part youth. On the palate it's ample and rich, with powerful cherry fruit supported by moderately intense spicy berry fruit acidity that has some sweetness to it, and by tannins that are smooth, though they do have slight youthful peppery accents, and it flows into a fairly balsamic finish that's quite long. Traditional, and rather graceful in this key; if you like the style you will enjoy it considerably. I would give it a year to come together, and expect it to age well for at least a decade, perhaps longer.
2 stars

Grimaldi Giacomo Sotto Castello di Novello Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is intense, with ripe berry fruit laced with rosa canina and some leaf tobacco, and sweetish balsamic accents too that provide depth. On the palate it's full, and fairly sweet, with slightly jammy berry fruit supported by deft balsam-laced berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that have a certain warmth to them and flow into a fairly long clean balsam-laced plum cherry finish. It's quite young, and quite approachable, and will drink now with stews or roasts, though it also has the legs with which to age nicely for a decade or more, at least.
2 stars

Elvio Cogno Ravera Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with balsamic notes and spice supported by leaf tobacco and some berry fruit; it's very young, but displays pleasing complexity. On the palate it's full, with bright rich cherry fruit supported by deft slightly savory berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are warm and savory, with slight bitter graphite accents, and flow into a clean fresh tannic finish. Graceful, and though one could drink it now with a steak or roast, it will reward those who have the patience to give it 3-5 years, and are well for a decade more, at least.

Barolo made from Grapes from Various Comuni

Terre da Vino Paesi Tuoi Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with rosa canina and some leather supported by leaf tobacco and spice, and delicate underlying berry fruit, with mentholated spice as well. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and some underbrush, and by tannins that are warm and already fairly smooth, with a dusky burr, and flow into lasting warmth. Pleasant in a fairly direct key and quite approachable despite its youth, and will also age nicely.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Le Strette Le Strette Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep ruby with black reflections and slight orange in the rim. The bouquet is metallic, with dusky bitter notes and some spice, and also some underlying berry fruit supported by quite a bit of alcohol. On the palate it's straight forward, with ripe rich cherry fruit supported by brisk cherry and forest berry fruit acidity, and by muscular tannins that have a youthful burr, and flow into a fairly bright sour cherry finish. It's like a well-muscled teen athlete, up front and vigorous, and is pleasing in its directness. One doesn't usually say a Barolo is a wine to set out and drink, but that's what will happen if you set this out with a well-marbled porterhouse cut.
2 stars

Azienda Agricola Montaribaldi Borzoni Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by mentholated accents and spice, and some berry fruit jam as well, and underlying cedar and leaf tobacco. Vigorous. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright cherry and forest berry fruit supported by deft sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, and have slight savory notes to them; they're not velvety yet but could go that route. It's not tremendously complex, but is pleasant in a rather muscular key, and will age nicely for many years.
2 stars

Terre da Vino Essenze Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and spicy, with savory berry fruit and some cedar mingled with Moroccan leather and some mentholated accents. On the palate it's fairly direct and quite smooth, with moderately intense rather bitter berry fruit supported more by minerality than acidity, and by ample very smooth tannins that flow into a fairly quick savory finish. It lacks oomph and complexity, and to be honest I would expect more from a Barolo.
1 star

Terre del Barolo Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense and rather chemical at the outset, though this blows off to reveal spicy notes and green leather with some savory accents and underlying leaf tobacco. Not much fruit, but that's not uncommon in Nebbiolo. On the palate it's full, with leafy minerality supported by pleasant sour berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are rather splintery and flow into a fairly long mineral finish with underlying sour berry fruit acidity. Fairly direct, but will drink quite well with succulent red meats. I'd have liked a little more fruit to complement the minerality.
1 star

Famiglia Anselma Famiglia Anselma Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful and quite fresh, with mentholated jammy berry fruit with some fresh cut ripe yellow peach accents supported by pleasant spice; it's very young, and has a pleasant cheekiness to it, and as it opens the menthol increases and some leaf tobacco also emerges. On the palate it's rich, with bright berry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and graphite bitterness, and by tannins that are fairly smooth, and ample, though they do have bitter accents as well. It's fairly straightforward but has nice fruit and power, and will drink quite well with foods, and also age well for many years.
2 stars

Prunotto Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and some orange in the rim. The bouquet is smoky and penetrating, with hardwood ash supporting minerality and slight berry fruit, though what really comes though now is the penetrating smoke. On the palate it's ample, with moderate sour berry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and tannins that have a warm splintery burr, and flow into a rather splintery tannic finish. It's young, and needs a year to come together; this said it's fairly direct and I might have liked a little more complexity.
1 star

Gianni Gagliardo Serre Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine paling to orange in the rim. The bouquet is bright, with slightly jammy berry fruit supported by slight brambly spice, some white pepper, and as it opens chalk and cedar. On the palate it's full, with moderately intense rather liquid jammy plum cherry fruit supported more by minerality than acidity, and by tannins that are rather splintery and flow into a palate-drying tannic finish with some plum accents. The tannins may smooth in with time, but at present they are simply too dry for me.
1 star

Barolo from Roddi d'Alba

Bruna Grimaldi Bricco Ambrogio Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and orange rim; it looks a little older than it is. The bouquet is fairly intense with greenish vegetal accents and quite a bit of alcohol supported by nose tingling spice and green leather, and -- gradually and grudgingly -- some berry fruit. On the palate it's ample and languid, with fairly rich plum cherry fruit that has a degree of sweetness to it that's also due to alcohol, and is supported by some plum acidity and fairly smooth ample tannins. The palate is more ahead of the nose in a quite ripe key, and I would give it a couple of years at least a year. If you like ripe but not soft wines you'll enjoy it; if you prefer wines that are more towards cherry and berry fruit you'll like it less. But it does have a cheeky appeal.
2 stars

Eredi Lodali Lorena Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is muted, with some berry fruit and slight mentholated spice supported by slight acidity; it's still coming together. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry and forest berry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have hints of Moroccan leather and leaf tobacco to them, and flow into a dry tannic finish with quite a bit of alcohol to tingle the tongue. It needs another year to come together, at which point it will be pleasant in a fairly direct, up front key.
1 star

Wines From Verduno

Belcolle Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and pale rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with berry fruit supported by spice and slight cedar mingled with greenish vegetal notes and some leaf tobacco, and also a fair amount of alcohol. Very young and still going in several directions at once, but promising. On the palate it's full and smooth, with fairly powerful ripe cherry plum fruit supported by some jammy berry fruit accents and moderate mineral acidity that has a greenish cast, and tannins that are ample and have a certain dusky bitterness to them. Pleasant in a slightly voluptuous rather ripe key, and will drink well with succulent meats, including drier meats such as pot roasts, and will also age nicely for a decade or more.
2 stars

Bosco Agostino Neirane Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling overtones orange. The bouquet is fairly intense, with delicate rosa canina and leaf tobacco supported by some minerality and underlying berry fruit. Pleasing elegance in a fairly traditional key, and though it is quite young it has a lot to say. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with rich sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a smooth sweet burr, and flow into a fairly long sour cherry finish. It's quite young, but graceful, and will work very well with foods now, and also age well for a decade at least.
2 stars

Alessandria Fratelli Monvigliero Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with brownish black reflections and leathery orange in the rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with leather and leaf tobacco more than fruit, smoky bitterness, and as it opens greenish vegetal accents too. On the palate it's ample with moderate rather soft fruit -- mostly plum though it's fairly generic -- supported by minerality and tannins that while languid and broad also have a splintery burr, and flow into a fairly sweet cherry plum finish. It's a bit lax, with the tannins that are dry, and I'd have liked more acidity and better tannic definition.
1 star

Burlotto Comm. G. B. Acclivi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, in a sweetish cast, with menthol and rosa canina mingled with fairly bright mineral acidity, leaf tobacco, and spice. On the palate it's ample and soft, with ripe slightly sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and menthol-laced tannins that flow into a long warm finish with spicy mentholated notes. It's rather languid and quite approachable, not to say surprisingly mature for a young Barolo. If you prefer tighter more acidic wines it won't work as well for you, but if you like ample riper wines you will enjoy it. Very much a child of the vintage.
2 stars

Castello di Verduno Massara Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is rich, with ripe berry fruit supported by greenish vegetal accents and some greenish yellow peaches with slight leaf tobacco as well. On the palate it's ample, with bright cherry fruit supported by sour cherry acidity and tannins that have a youthful splintery burr, and flow into a fresh sour berry fruit finish. Quick to write but harmonious in a fairly direct cheeky key that brings a smiling tomboy to mind, and will drink well with foods, red meats in particular, and also age nicely for a number of years.

Wines from Barolo
Donna Bianca Barolo DOCG 2007 Azienda Agricola La Querciola
Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is is fairly intense, with smoky peppery accents mingled with a fair amount of menthol and some alcohol, supported by rosa canina and leaf tobacco, and slight sweetness. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that have a splintery burr; it's not as full as I might have liked, and as the fruit fades the tannins stand around wondering what to do.
1 star

Bric Cenciurio Barolo DOCG 2007
Almandine with black reflections and brownish orange rim. The bouquet is mature, with balsamic accents mingled with some warmth and spice, and a fair amount of alcohol. Not much fruit. On the palate it's brighter than the nose suggests, with fairly rich slightly sweet sour cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and by tannins that have a greenish splintery burr, and flow into a rather dry tannic finish. It needs a year for the nose to develop, and perhaps two for the tannins to smooth, at which point it will be middle of the road in key. I found myself wishing for a little more richness to the fruit.
1 star

Poderi Einaudi Costa Grimaldi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with minerality and leaf tobacco; the combination is quick to write but harmonious. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit that has some ripe berry fruit accents, supported by berry fruit acidity and by fairly rich tannins that have a mentholated burr and flow into a fairly long sour cherry finish. Pleasant, with verve and vigor, and will work very well with grilled meats or roasts now, while it also has the capacity to age well for a number of years, becoming lacy with time.
2 stars

G. D. Vajra Alba Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and pale pinkish-orange rim. It's a bit redder than some. The bouquet is fresh, with rich jammy berry fruit supported by some mentholated notes and some leaf tobacco. On the palate it's bright, with rich sour cherry fruit supported by fairly savory minerality and bright berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that have a youthful peppery burr and flow into a bright peppery sour berry fruit finish with lasting warmth. It's quite lively, and very approachable; one could drink it with a steak already, though it will reward those with the patience to give it a couple of years to develop. Big, fresh, and forward.

2 stars

A wine from Barolo & La Morra

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is penetrating, with acidity and minerality laced with leaf tobacco and some cedar, and a fair amount of spice, with some hints of sweetness too. Rich, and fairly mature. On the palate it's full and rather languid, with cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense acidity and by tannins that are quite blocky and lay a splintery burr over the tongue and flow into a fairly long warm peppery finish. It's fairly ripe, and despite the languidity of the fruit quite young from a tannic standpoint, needing at least a couple of years for them to fold in. An interesting combination of ripeness and tannic brashness; it's particular and if you like the style you will enjoy it -- in a few years -- but you have to like the style.

Back to Barolo

Germano Angelo Vigna Rué Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is full, rich, and slightly overripe with cherry plum fruit supported by leaf tobacco and some peppery spice, also slight cedar. Very young but nice depth. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by slight balsamic bitter acidity and by tannins that are smooth, and rather mineral, and flow into a fairly long warm finish. Quite young, but shows promise in a fairly traditional key, and though one could drink it now -- it does have a slightly more mature than usual feel to it -- it will reward those who have some patience;
2 stars

Cascina Adelaide Preda Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with shellac and cedar mingled with petroleum at first swish, and more of the same with the second. Lots of oak. On the palate it's ripe, and quite smooth, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by deft slightly dusky berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet savory tannins that have a clean cedar overlay and flow into a long warm cherry plum fruit finish with savory tannic underpinning. Quite graceful, in a rich international key, and though the fruit is ripe it's not overripe and has acidity for direction; if you like the international style you will enjoy it very much, and even crusty traditionalists will find things to think about.

Famiglia Anselma Del Comune di Barolo Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling overtones orange. The bouquet is intense and fresh, with violets and peppery spice supported by some balsamic notes and a fair amount of alcohol; it's going in several directions at once and with the second sniff seems somewhat disjointed. On the palate it's full, with fairly bright berry fruit that is however quite short, giving way to dry tannins that sit there by themselves, wondering what to do next. It may come together in a couple of years, but I'd have liked more harmony today -- there isn't much.

Bric Cenciurio Coste di Rosa Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, and greenish, with alcohol and cedar and some menthol, but not much in the way of fruit. On the palate it's ample with fairly ripe berry fruit supported by sweetish plum accents and tannins that are very dry and splintery, and flow into a dry splintery finish. It's like someone wandering around in boxer shorts -- not ready for polite society, and won't be for at least a couple of years; the tannins are very aggressive now and shut out the fruit.

Barale Fratelli Castellero Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense and greenish, with spicy savory notes and wood smoke, but not much fruit. Pungency, and greenishness, but not fruit. On the palate it's splintery, with sour berry fruit that is overwhelmed by tannins before it has time to do much more than raise a hand, and the finish continues at length. In college we talked about angry young men, and this is an angry young wine.

Grimaldi Giacomo Le Coste Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly rich, in a funky key, with balsamic accents and some sea salt mingled with wet stable straw and some plum cherry fruit. On the palate it's ample, and softer than I expected, with moderately intense cherry plum fruit supported by slight balsam-laced acidity and by tannins that are ample and smooth, and flow into a rather soft balsamic finish. It feels as if the ripening got away from them, and though the tannins are sweet and ripe the fruit is overripe and acidity has fallen off.

Marchesi di Barolo Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections; it's one of the darkest wines poured so far. The bouquet is dusky, with savory notes and spice supporting some berry fruit; there's also some rosa canina, and a certain sweetness to it. On the palate it's bright, with rich red berry fruit supported by lively sour berry fruit acidity and tannins that have a youthful splinteriness to them, and flow into a fairly bright sour berry fruit finish. It's quite young in a rather muscular key, but approachable, and will drink well with red meats in the short term, while aging nicely over longer periods. If you like the style, which revolves more around power than finesse -- it's more a wine for red meats than meditation -- you will enjoy it, and it will age nicely for at least a decade.

Michele Chiarlo Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly intense, with spice and savory accents mingled with leaf tobacco and warmth but not much fruit. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth with cherry plum fruit supported more by dusky bitterness than acidity, and by tannins that are ample, soft and smooth, and flow into a fairly long plum finish with peppery accents. Pleasant if you like the style, but you have to like bigger softer very ripe wines. If you prefer tighter wines with more acidity and verve it won't work as well for you.

Brezza Giacomo e Figli Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with spice and some greenish accents shot through with warmth and some greenish vegetal accents that emerge with swishing. On the palate it's brighter than I expected from the nose, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and dusky leaf tobacco bitterness, while the tannins are ample and rather blocky, but display some hints of velvet. It's very young, with the palate a little further along than the nose but neither really presentable. I would give it a couple of years to come together, and expect it to age nicely in a traditional key.

Rinaldi Francesco e Figli Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine in the rim. The bouquet is oddly metallic, with some sweetness and plum cherry fruit, but what really comes through it peppery hot iron. On the palate it's ripe, with cherry plum fruit supported by savory warmth and tannins that are ample and fairly smooth, though they do have some splinters to them. I'd have liked more brightness and richness to the fruit, which is a little too ripe and doesn't really stand up to the tannins.
1 star

Damilano Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections. The bouquet is powerful, and fairly balsamic, with warmth and some alcohol, and some spice, with slight greenish vegetal accents that add depth, and some underlying cedar. On the palate it's fairly bright, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by some acidity, and by tannins that have a cedary burr and flow into a peppery tannic finish with warm sour berry fruit underpinning. It needs another year for the tannins to fold in, and is fairly direct; I'd have liked more richness to the fruit and less cedar in the tannins, which are angrier than the fruit warrants.

Gianni Gagliardo Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with jammy berry fruit supported by mentholated accents and spice with some underlying leaf tobacco as well. Nice balance in a fairly forward key. On the palate it's quite ripe and rather soft, with smooth sweetish cherry plum fruit supported by moderately intense mineral berry fruit acidity, and by ample sweet smooth tannins that flow into a fairly long fruit laced finish with some savory accents, and deft underlying tannins that have some balsamic accents. It's soft, but not overripe, and if you like the style you will enjoy it, though it is soft for a Barolo. It may do interesting things over the next 5-8 years, though I doubt it will be really long lived.

Burlotto Comm. G. B. Vigneto Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to white. The bouquet is fairly intense, with balsamic plum fruit supported by slight stable straw and summer sun low in the sky -- that's what the aroma brings to mind -- with greenish peppery accents as well and some nose tingling acidity that verges on the pungent. On the palate it's ample and ripe, with rich soft plum cherry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins that have a slight glancing youthful quality to them, and by moderate berry fruit acidity that flows into a fairly long bright berry fruit finish with underlying sour berry fruit acidity. It's ripe and fairly soft, but not overripe, and comes across as being from a hot vintage though the acidity is maintained; if you like the style -- a big soft not too ripe wine -- you will enjoy it because it does display a certain grace, but you have to like the style. If you prefer wines that are tighter and more vigorous, it won't work as well for you.

Borgogno F.lli Serio & Battista Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with ripe berry fruit supported by spice and greenish accents, and by some leaf tobacco and slight balsamic notes, with alcohol providing support from underneath. On the palate it's ample and quite ripe, with cherry plum fruit supported by warm savory minerality and tannins that have a spicy burr and flow into a long warm tannic finish. It's pleasant, and fairly zesty in a big ripe but not overripe key, and if you like the style will drink nicely in the short term with drier meats, though I wouldn't age it for too long.

Pira di Chiara Boschis Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and ruby in the rim; it's one of the darker wines poured today. On the palate it's fairly intense, with some berry fruit supported by cedar and leaf tobacco and some mentholated spice; nice depth in a fairly international key. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and smooth sweet tannins that have a slight burr, and flow into a clean sour berry fruit finish with slight cedary accents. It's up front and direct in a fairly muscular key, and will drink quite well with succulent roasts or stews. If you're looking for more complexity I'm not sure you'll find it here, but it will work very well with foods, and that's important in a wine too.

Poderi Einaudi Nei Cannubi Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with gum Arabic and spice supported by a fair amount of alcohol and some leaf tobacco; there are also slight vegetal accents. On the palate it's ample and quite ripe, with cherry plum fruit supported by mineral acidity and by ample soft tannins that have a slight dusky burr and flow into a fairly long slightly sour finish with berry fruit and balsamic accents and a very dry tannic underpinning. It's ample and on the softer side of the spectrum; I'd have liked a little more brightness to the fruit, which the tannins eclipsed on the second sip. This will likely improve with time, but I must score what I taste.

Virna Borgogno Cannubis Boschis Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with petroleum and greenish accents mingled with quite a bit of sea salt and some barnyard tang; it comes across as aggressive. On the palate it's surprisingly languid, with leathery berry fruit supported by warm balsam-laced tannins and slight balsamic acidity that flow into a fairly long finish with berry fruit and leaf tobacco. Much older in style on the palate than the nose in its present stage would suggest, and I would give the wine a couple of years to get its bearings, because it may do interesting things in a ripe traditional key. If you prefer brighter more fruit forward wines it won't work as well for you.

Boroli Cerequio Barolo DOCG 2007 Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with mineral laced berry fruit supported by some balsamic accents and pleasant spice, with some sour berry fruit acidity as well. On the palate it's ample and full, with fairly bright sour cherry fruit supported by berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are warm and full, and fairly smooth, and flow into a clean savory finish with bright berry fruit and tannins that are rather blocky. It's still very young, but approachable, and if you like the style, which is more towards berry fruit (as opposed to plum) but not really tight, you will enjoy it; it will work well with stews or roasts.

Azienda Agricola Giuseppe Rinaldi Cannubi-San Lorenzo Ravera Barolo DOCG 2007

Pale almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with rosa canina and leaf tobacco supporting some red berry fruit and slight smoky spice. Nice depth and harmony, though still quite young. On the palate it's full, with elegant cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth and sweet, with slight leaf tobacco accents, and flow into a long warm fairly bright cherry finish. Graceful, and though one could drink it now with a steak or roast, it will also age quite nicely for many years. If you are more traditionally minded you will enjoy it considerably, and modernists will find things to think about too.

Marchesi di Barolo Sarmassa Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly bright, with lively sour berry fruit supported by peppery spice and some balsamic accents, with some leaf tobacco and sea salt as well, and slight hints of rosa canina. Coming together, but nice depth. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich leathery sour berry fruit supported by moderately intense prune and mineral acidity and by tannins that are smooth and ample; it's fairly graceful, though a little more delicate than I might have expected -- a touch more verve would have been nice. The finish is savory and fairly long.

Virna Borgogno Prada Sarmassa Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is greenish, with oak and leaf tobacco and some spice supported by peppery accents and alcohol with underlying rosa canina. On the palate it's bright, and richer than I expected, with lively slightly greenish sour cherry and forest berry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins that have some cedary overtones and fairly bright berry fruit acidity that flow into a clean sour cherry finish with tannic underpinning. It surprised me; from the nose I expected oak to be more apparent on the palate, and though it is present in the tannins it does as it should and steps back to let the fruit carry the show, which it does, nicely. I would give the wine another year for the nose to develop, and expect it to age well for a decade at least. It grew upon me

Brezza Giacomo & Figli Bricco Sarmassa Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black almandine reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with savory notes and some greenish yellow peach with underlying shellac, and slight berry fruit. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderately intense rather generic fruit supported by minerality more than acidity, and tannins that are smooth and rather glancing. I'd have liked more richness and brightness to the fruit, which gives way to the tannins, which don't do the same job when it comes to leading a wine.

Giuseppe Rinaldi Brunate - La Costa Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with leaf tobacco and spice mingled with rosa canina and slight sweetness; it's quite young but displays nice depth. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with fairly rich sour cherry fruit supported by some sour berry fruit acidity and by ample smooth tannins that have a slight burr, and flow into a clean fresh berry fruit finish. The tannins are bit lax and it's not really tight, and this is an effect of the vintage; if you like ample soft not overripe wines you will like it, and even if you prefer more verve you will find things to ponder, especially in the nose. A delicate expression of the vintage in a soft but fairly traditional key, and it could become quite interesting with time.

Marcarini Brunate Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with lively sour cherry fruit laced with floral accents and greenish vegetal spice, and also some leaf tobacco and slight green leather. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by bright berry fruit acidity and tannins that are fairly smooth, though they do display a fairly bright burr, and flow into a long warm tannic finish with sour berry fruit underpinning. Pleasant in a rather bracing key, and needs a year at least to come together; the tannins are fairly aggressive and will likely remain so, but it will work very well with foods when it has its bearings.

Wines from Castiglione Falletto Fontana Livia Barolo DOCG 2007

Pale almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with some petroleum and spice mingled with greenish vegetal accents that bring to mind unripe yellow peach, and a fair amount of spice; there's also some cedar. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour berry fruit supported by tannins that are peppery and flow into a warm peppery tannic finish with some alcohol and sour berry fruit with some of the same peaches present in the nose, that settles into tannic dryness. It needs a year for the tannins to fold in, at which point it will be middle of the road in key.

Azienda Agricola Cavalier Bartolomeo Solanotto Altenasso Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with a fair amount of cedar and some greenish brambly notes supported by alcohol; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by mineral more than fruit driven acidity, and by tannins that are rather peppery and flow into a warm rather bitter finish with considerable dry tannic overlay. It needs at least a year for the tannins to fold in, and two will likely be better; at present it's really not ready for polite society.

Azienda Vitivinicola Filippo Domenico di Elio Filippino Castiglione falletto Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine in the rim. The bouquet is powerful, with quite a bit of cedar and some cold coffee, with greenish accents and spice as well. On the palate it's fairly rich, with moderate berry fruit supported by cedar laced tannins and some mineral acidity that flow into a fairly long cedary finish. A great deal of oak, too much for me.

Fratelli Giacosa Vigna Mandorlo Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with berry fruit supported by some cedar and peppery spice, and also by a fair amount of alcohol. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and tannins that have some graphite shaving bitterness, and flow into a clean peppery tannic finish. The fruit of the palate is further along than the nose, which is in mid stride, though the tannins need a year at least to smooth over, and it would benefit from at least a couple of years. It will age well for many years thereafter.

Sobrero Francesco Ciabot Tanasio Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is rustic, with balsamic accents and wet stable straw mingled with some greenish notes. On the palate it's bright, however, with lively sour cherry fruit whose acidity gives it a sunny cast supported by tannins that are smooth and sweet, and flow into a fairly long berry fruit finish with balsamic overtones and hints of barnyard tang with underlying mentholated spice. If you like the style you will enjoy it, because it has a fresh and invigorating brightness, and also considerable aging capacity, and will become gracefully lacy with time.

A wine from Castiglione Falletto And La Morra

Oddero Poderi e Cantine Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit supported by greenish accents and leathery spice, and by a fair amount of alcohol. Quite young and still coming together. On the palate it's fairly rich, and rather languid, with ample soft berry fruit supported by mineral acidity and by tannins that are very dry and cast a veneer over the tongue; they're quite aggressive and overshadow the fruit completely. Too aggressive for me, and while it's true that they will fold in with time they'd have to fold in quite a bit.

Cascina Adelaide Pernanno Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is spicy, with quite a bit of cedar and some greenish spice, and some leaf tobacco, though what really comes out now is the cedar. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich plum cherry fruit supported by brown sugar sweetness and slight acidity, and by tannins that are ample and quite smooth, and flow into a fairly long finish that has some sour berry fruit acidity for direction and lasting warmth. It's quite ripe, in a rather languid key, but not really soft -- the fruit has prunes, but the acidity and tannins are there to keep it from settling, and the finish is bright. It's not what I really think of in terms of a Barolo -- the fruit is quite ripe and I prefer tighter tannins -- but it works well, and will drink nicely with drier meats and also with meat dishes that have some sweetness to them, say roast rabbit with prunes.

Franco Conterno Azienda Agricola Cascina Sciulun1 Vigna Pugnane Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich with greenish plum fruit accents and some spice supported by spice and some dusky cedar. Quite ripe, and bright in this context. On the palate it's ample and quite ripe, with cherry plum fruit supported by fairly sweet berry fruit acidity and by ample tannins that have a slight splintery burr and flow into a clean dusky finish with some leaf tobacco accents mingled into mineral acidity and slight tannic notes that emerge as the fruit fades. It's ample and ripe, but not overripe, and if you like bigger softer wines you will enjoy it. If you instead prefer tighter wines that are better defined it will work less well for you.
2 stars

Tenuta Montanello Montanello Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim with some orange. Darker than most of the wines poured today. The bouquet is intense with penetrating, quite nose-tingling cedar-laced acidity and greenish spice; the combination is powerful and covers whatever other nuances there may be. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry plum fruit supported by moderate mineral acidity and some bitterness, and by tannins that are ample and fairly dry, and flow into a peppery finish with leaf tobacco-laced berry fruit. It's very young, and the nose gives an impression of being in a funk at the moment; I have a feeling that it will gain in complexity over the next couple of years, and the wine will be worth waiting for. This said, stylistically it is ample and soft, and will only really work for you if you like this kind of wine. If you prefer tighter more closely bound Barolo, it will work less well for you.

Azienda Agricola Roccheviberti Rocche di Castiglione Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with leaf tobacco and sweetish spice mingled with rosa canina and some berry fruit, and underlying cedar with hints of hardwood ash; it's quite fresh and quite young, and though clearly in mid stride inviting. On the palate it's full and bright, with fairly intense cherry fruit supported by dusky bitter graphite shaving laced acidity and tannins that have a savory peppery burr and flow into a fairly long savory tannic finish. Pleasant in youth, and though the acidity isn't really bright it does have a certain peppery verve to it.

Massolino Panussi Barolo DOCG 2007

Dusky almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with strong vegetal notes supported by some cedary notes and quite a bit of alcohol; there's also some leaf tobacco and green spice. Not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by moderate acidity and tannins that are ample and soft, and flow into a rather peppery finish. It's quite well along, and very approachable in a fairly large soft but not overripe key.

Boroli Villero Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to Moroccan leather orange. The bouquet is powerful, with berry fruit mingled with scalded milk and hints of almond milk, which is a wood-fruit interaction, and quite a bit of milky cedar. Lots of oak. On the palate it's full, with fairly rich plum prune fruit that surrenders to a wave of peppery cedar laced spice that continues into a long cedar laced finish. Hugely oaky, and the oak overshadows the fruit completely; while oak does fold in with time I doubt it will successfully here.

Azienda Agricola Giacomo Fenocchio Villero Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, in a greenish vegetal key with spice and some peppery accents, with quite a bit of cedar too. On the palate it's rather languid, with moderately rich sour cherry fruit supported by slight minerality and to a greater degree by tannins that have a peppery burr and flow into a warm tannic finish. It's in flux, with the components going in several directions, and needs a year or perhaps two to come together and get its bearings.

Fontana Livia Villero Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, and rather rustic, with greenish balsamic accents and supported by considerable sea salt and some greenish peach fruit, and a fair amount of alcohol as well. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by minerality more than acidity and by tannins that are fairly smooth, and flow into a peppery berry fruit finish with tannic underpinning. It's ample and soft, and lacking in brightness; there's more minerality than acidity, and this makes it seem settled, and while the peppery burr does provide life it really cannot substitute for acidity.

Cordero di Montezemolo - Monfalletto Enrico VI Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is smoky, with mineral bitterness and a fair amount of cedar supported by hardwood ash and nose tingling acidity; there's not much fruit. On the palate it's ample, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and tannins that have a smoky cedar overlay and flow into a fairly long bright berry fruit finish with cedary underpinning. The nose is still unsettled, and though the palate is further along it too still has a ways to go; I would give it a year, and expect it to clean up nicely in an approachable international key. If you are more traditionally minded it won't work as well for you.

Oddero Poderi e Cantine Villero Barolo DOCG 2007

Almandine with brownish black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly bright, with cedar and some spice mingled with peppery accents and a fair amount of alcohol. Not much fruit. On the palate it's ample and more mineral than fruit driven, with leaf tobacco and some rosa canina supported by dusky bitterness and tannins that have a powerful tongue curling splintery burr and flow into a long tannic finish. It's woefully young in an ample fairly international key, and needs at least a year to get its bearings and come together. It's a wine you should only consider if you like the style; if you prefer brighter fruit and acidity it won't work for you.

Cavallotto Tenuta Bricco Boschis Bricco Boschis Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some berry fruit and slight spice. Not quite nobody home, but in that direction. On the palate it's full, with bright peppery fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by peppery tannins that flow into a fairly long peppery finish. I'd have liked more brightness from the fruit and less aggressiveness from the tannins, though in their defense one can say that they're woefully young and unhappy. A score now will likely penalize the wine.

Azienda Agricola Brovia Rocche Barolo DOCG 2007

Deep black almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is is fresh, with bright floral accents and deft berry fruit laced with hints of strawberries, and as it opens some greenish accents and hints of leaf tobacco, with some cedar and alcohol as well. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich cherry strawberry fruit supported by deft berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are ample and smooth, and flow into a clean rather peppery berry fruit finish. Pleasant, in a ripe but not overripe key, and though it will benefit from another year's bottle aging it is already approachable now, and will work well with drier meats, or sweeter meat dishes along the lines of roast rabbit with prunes.
