Garantito IGP: The Mossio Brothers and the Great Dolcetti if Rodello

This time Roberto Giuliani takes the stand:

After dedicating many Guaranteed notes to more or less renowned restaurants, I feel the need to return to the world of wine. Primarily because I'm interested in two brothers, though it would be more correct to say in the entire Mossio dynasty, which has given the Dolcetto of the Langhe shine for generations, producing superb wines from a varietal that few really understand yet. I met Valerio seven years ago at Dolcetto & Dolcetto, but hadn't seen him since, nor had I had occasion to taste other vintages of either Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli or Dolcetto D'Alba Passo delli Perdoni (they also make a Barbera d'Alba and an impressive Langhe Nebbiolo). I wanted to rectify this oversight and finally managed to go visit them in Rodello, where I had the unexpected pleasure of a vertical of Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli, from 2010 to 2005, six vintages to understand the quality and potential of this historic Piemontese varietal.

The first thing one notes upon arriving at the winery is Bricco Caramelli, which is the highest land in the area, almost 500 meters, always well ventilated, and offers a breathtaking view all the way to Alba. The rows are evenly laid out, with wooden support steaks, while the vines are trained to the guyot system, and grow on a soil consisting of silt, sand, and clay; I visited in the second week of May and the shoots were working their way up to the support wires. There's nice ground cover, which requires the Mossio brothers to manage the vineyard in an eco-compatible way, and the area they have under vine is 10 hectares (28 giornate piemontesi), which yield 50,000 bottles per year.

One need only chat for a while while walking among the rows to realize that they are driven by passion and a degree of recklessness, given that Valerio, despite his youth, has suffered a severe heart attack and continues to perform backbreaking labor in vineyard and cellar. For the more curious, Caramelli is the family name of the Marchesi di Clavesana, who were willed land in Rodello by Contessa Clemenza in 1676, including this farm, which has now been restored.

As I said, the visit also offered me the opportunity to evaluate the aging capacity of Bricco Caramelli thanks overtones a nice vertical from 2010 to 2005 (which could have gone further, but they had finished the older vintages). My general impression is that it is a wine easily capable of embarking on a long path, and though there are variations attributable to the vintages, it is an excellent Cru, one of the finest Dolcetti of all, and a wine that sets the standard. Nor should one underestimate Piano delle Perdoni, which, depending upon the vintage, can pluck a rabbit from the hat, displaying quality that easily matches Caramelli. Looking in detail...

Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2010
This ferments for 10 days in steel, macerating on the skins, and there's no wood, nor filtration, nor stabilization to take away from the Dolcetto aromas that emerge from the glass. The most recent, this vintage is impenetrable violet ruby and has an extremely fresh bouquet with intense violets, prunes, black cherries, blackberries, balsamic accents, and developing spice. The palate gives the same freshness, a rich, flavorful wine one could call chewable, and one can foresee a happy marriage of structure and elegance.

Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2009
Dusky, almost impenetrable ruby; the nos is already more complex; there are violets, and a fruity surge of currants, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and again balsamic notes with a hint of tobacco. Though the opening of the nose is less immediate than that of the 2010 the palate churns with energy and finesse, power and elegance, savory notes, and perfect symmetry with the nose, and remarkable persistence.

Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2008
A slightly different vintage; the color is still perfect concentrated ruby, while the nose opens with vegetal accents that yield to violets, iris, cherries, blueberries, blackberries, interesting gingery accents, cinnamon, and pleasant menthol. The palate is more than convincing; there is a slight tannic bite, excellent fruit, and a delicately bitter almond laced finish.

Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2007
A hot vintage, but at this altitude, and with vines that are decades old this is not a problem: the nose opens with impressive sweetness and intensity, also because the alcohol has blended perfectly with the fruit, which once again moves towards prunes, cherries, and hints of raspberries, while there are also resiny balsamic notes, hints of pepper, and dried flowers. The palate is harmonious, once again balsamic, and still fresh and savory, and long.

Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2006
In this vintage one is really struck by the violet visible in the rich dark ruby of the wine; 6 years have passed since the harvest and it hasn't faded at all. The fruit is impressively fresh, with echoes of peach that then give way to the more classic cherries, prunes, and ripe raspberries, while there are also balsamic accents, with mature aromas of graphite and dark tobacco. The palate reveals full structure and perfect balance, with tannins that are silky and clearly show that the wine is far from reaching the end of its aging. Terrific persistence.
.
Dolcetto D'Alba Bricco Caramelli 2005
Perhaps the most symbolic year, in a positive sense, one that reveals the greatness of the vineyard; despite seven years of age there are terrific floral accents blaanced by properly sweet ripe fruit that's not the least bit jammy. The vintage emerges on the palate too, with a more nervous, lighter texture that I don't dislike at all: I've already enjoyed it in many Baroli and Barbareschi from this vintage.

La Bruciata: Moscato & More

A couple of years ago Oscar Bosio, who is best known for his Moscato, contacted me via Facebook and asked me to stop at his stand at Vinitaly. I did, for what I thought would be a quick stop, only to discover he makes all sorts of wines, all worth thinking about. This year I didn't make it to his stand, and he kindly sent samples to me.

La Bruciata Langhe Arneis DOC 2011
Lot AR04.12
Pale slightly greenish brassy yellow with brilliant brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is intense, with pleasant citrus, a mixture of citron and tangerine, mingled with some minerality and underlying slightly mentholated heather, all supported by sea salt. On the palate it's bright, with lively mineral laced brambly citrus that reveals heathery vegetal accents as it flows into the finish, which is long. It's quite refreshing, with considerable backbone, and will work very well with summer foods, including fried fish or meats, and also has the wherewithal to age nicely for at least 2-3 years; while its freshness now is nice if I had a case I'd set a couple of bottles aside, because they could provide a pleasant surprise.
90-91

La Bruciata Langhe Chardonnay DOC 2011
Lot CH 04.12
Pale brassy green with brilliant greenish reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fresh, and rather lemony, with some underlying sea salt and slight crisp green apple, and an underpinning of heather from a cut field in summer. On the palate it's softer than the Arneis, with rather languid lemony pineapple laced fruit supported by bright acidity and slight minerality that flows into a fairly long tart finish that gradually releases fairly acidic Delicious apple notes. It's a wine that will work nicely as an aperitif or with more delicate dishes -- I wouldn't serve it with fried meats or fish -- and I would drink it now to enjoy its freshness.
2 stars

La Bruciata Aivè Vino Bianco
Lot 2.10
An aivé is the opposite of a Sorì, in other words a north-facing slope, and this is a Moscato from north-facing slopes, bottled still. Because it's still -- the rules governing the appellations don't foresee a still dry Moscato -- it's a table wine, and therefore doesn't have a vintage, but from the lot number we can deduce that it's a 2010. Pale brassy yellow with brilliant brassy reflections and slight greenish highlights; white rim. The bouquet is elegant, with rich sugary Moscato notes mingled with menthol and heather, and rather voluptuous yellow peach, while there's also a slight counterpoint of sweaty blonde that adds complexity and depth. Particular. On the palate it's  crisp and bright, with considerable minerality supported by mineral acidity that has slight heather notes as well, and flows into a long mineral finish. It's quite tight, and much brasher than the Chardonnay, and to my way of thinking better defined, but you have to like tarter defter wines to enjoy it. If you do you will, and it is quite distinct from the more common International varietal wines..
88-90

La Bruciata Moscato D'Asti DOCG 2011
Lot MO 10 11
Pale greenish brassy yellow with fine abundant perlage, quite a bit for a Moscato. The bouquet is rich, but not overly sweet, with some honeydew melon  and slight heather supported by the sweetness that honeydew melon  can have. Quick to write but harmonious. On the palate it's full and sweet, with elegant honeydew melon  fruit that has enough acidity to keep from being cloying, and creamy fullness from the sparkle, which is quite soft, and it all flows into a fairly long honeydew melon  laced finish. Quite pleasant, and will be perfect at poolside on a hot day, or with frieds outside as the sky darkens and the stars come out. A good Moscato can be a great delight, and this one is.
90-91

La Bruciata Dolcetto D'Alba DOC 2011
Lot DO 04.12
Lively slightly purple cherry ruby with brilliant ruby reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is classic Dolcetto, with a mixture of red berry fruit and bitter almonds supported by some greenish brambly accents. Zesty. On the palate it's light-medium bodied, with lively bitter berry fruit supported by bitter almonds and quite a bit of sea salt, while the tannins are dusky and bitter, and have a nice bite to them. In a word, scrappy, and if you like the style it will work very well with simple grilled meats, for example burgers or ribs or chicken (the latter seasoned with herbs, not sweet sauces). It's one of those wines that will go very fast in the proper setting, and you will need a second bottle.
2 stars

La Bruciata Barbera D'Alba DOC 2010
Lot BA 04.11
Lively almandine ruby with black reflections and some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is warm, and fairly rich, with red berry fruit supported by brambly strawberry acidity and by some mineral notes that have a touch of struck granite to them, and that gain in intensity as the wine opens. On the palate it's medium bodied, with decidedly brambly fruit supported by considerable sea salt and some balsamic savory accents, coupled with fairly bright mineral acidity and tannins that have a slight burr to them. It's rather old style, especially in the balsamic cast, and if you are looking for ripe red fruit, and smooth softness, it's not going to work for you. If you instead like scrappier wines with a bit of bite to them, it will work very well with simple grilled meats or light stews, and go quickly.

Tasted at Vinitaly: Commendator Burlotto

As I have noted before, I usually finish Vinitaly with a visit to Commndator Burlotto, and I did so once again this year, finding Fabio and Marina still talking, though they were thinking about beginning to pack up -- this year the final day of Vinitaly finished at 6, and things were still hopping at 5:30.

So I began to taste and chat, and by the time we were finished the announcers had stopped telling everyone that the Fair was over, and to come back again next year :-/

Commendator Burlotto Elatis Vino Rosato 2011
E112
Pale rose petal pink with brilliant pinkish reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fresh with fairly bright forest berry fruit supported by raspberry acidity and some greenish vegetal accents with a fair amount of heather. Refreshing; a fellow taster also finds sweetish ginger root. On the palate it's bright, fresh, and fairly sweet, with delicate flinty tannins that flow into a fairly rich slightly greenish finish. Pleasant in a more voluptuous key than usual, and will be a pleasant summer wine.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Viridis langhe Sauvignon 2011
Lot VLS112
Lively brassy gold with brassy reflections and greenish highlights. The bouquet is quite varietal, with rich gooseberry fruit supported by greenish accents and spice with some chalk dust as well. Quite fresh and still coming together. On the palate it's rich, with bright gooseberry fruit supported by warm sour gooseberry/tart loquat acidity and a slight peppery tang that flow into a warm greenish finish. Quite pleasant, and will drink well with grilled or roasted fish, and be pleasant with fried fish or meats too.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Dives Langhe Sauvignon 2010
Lot LDLS111
Brassy white with brassy reflections and greenish highlights. The bouquet is fairly rich, with greenish notes and some spice mingled with gooseberry and sweaty blonde, which is a consistent marker for this wine. Pleasant, though it does bring to mind a certain Springsteen song (though he was talking about redheads). On the palate it's ample and rich, with fairly powerful loquat fruit supported by loquat acidity laced with slight lemon, and supported by the burr that loquats can have, flowing into a long tart finish. Pleasant to drink and will work well with fish or white meats, including fried fish.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Verduno Pelaverga 2010
Lot VP 211
Pale ruby with black reflections and brilliant ruby highlights. The bouquet is intense and spicy with wild flowers mingled with sandalwood and red berry fruit, and savory accents and slight cedar, with mace and nutmeg as well. An explosion in a spice shop! And absolutely typical of the varietal. On the palate it's mg, with lively spicy berry fruit supported by warm sour cherry raspberry acidity and by tannins that have a smooth spicy burr and flow into a warm savory berry fruit finish. Quite pleasant and will be very nice in the summer months, and also into fall.
88-90

Commendator Burlotto Dolcetto D'Alba 2010
Lot DA111
Deep ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is intense, with red berry fruit supported by almond blossoms and warm peppery notes, and by hints of underbrush and underlying spice. On the palate it's bright, with fresh moderately intense berry fruit supported by warm berry fruit acidity and tannins that are a little darker and more splintery than they have been in some years; it's a bit more brooding. It will work quite well with grilled meats or light roasts.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Barbera D'Alba 2010
Lot BA 111
Deep lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly bright, with tart berry fruit supported by raspberry acidity and some bitter accents. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour strawberry raspberry fruit supported by strawberry acidity and slightly flinty notes, while the tannins are smooth and it flows into a fairly long tart strawberry finish. It's a little firmer than other vintages have been, but is quite pleasant and will work very well with rich foods. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Aves barbera D'Alba 2010
Lot LBAA 111
Lively cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit supported by spicy notes and some cedar, and by some greenish vegetal accents. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by bright berry fruit acidity and some flinty minerality, and by tannins that are warm and have a slight dusky cedary overlay, and flow into a long warm berry fruit finish. Powerful, and a nice expression of a harder vintage; it's not as bright as some but will work quite well with grilled meats or roasts.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Mores Langhe DOC 2009
Lot ML111
This is a 50-50 blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera that ferment together. It's lively cherry ruby with brilliant ruby reflections. and pink rim. The bouquet is intense, with red berry fruit supported by some cedar and slight rosa canina, and by a greenish underpinning; it's quite fresh and displays considerable verve. And is also young. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by bright berry fruit acidity, and by tannins that are ample and tightly woven, flowing into a bright fairly tannic finish. A nice balance between the varietals, and though it does need a year to meld, it will be quite nice with red meats. Something to set aside (briefly) and enjoy.
90

Commendator Burlotto Freisa Langhe DOC 2010
Lot FL 111
Lively cherry ruby with some almandine in the rim. The bouquet is bright, with fairly rich berry fruit laced with rosa canina and some cumin seed spice, and also slight peppery accents, and some gunflint with a fair amount of alcohol as well. More charged and firm than some vintages. On the palate it's fresh, with bright sour cherry fruit supported by lively sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that have a warm spicy slightly greenish burr with licorice root accents, and flow into a fairly long licorice and berry fruit finish. Quite pleasant, in a powerful zesty key, and will drink well with grilled meats or light stews. Welcoming on the palate!
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo 2010
Lot LN 111
Lively almandine ruby with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is deft, with rosa canina supported by red berry fruit and some cherry strawberry acidity, and by clean spice. Pleasant to sniff, in a slightly less expansive key than in some vintages. On the palate it's bright and fresh, with lively cherry fruit supported by dusky sour berry fruit accents and acidity that has some orange to it, and flows into a clean bright tannic finish that has some youthful splinteriness to it. Pleasant in a light zesty key and will be very nice with roasts and grilled meats, and if you wanted to be extravagant a burger with good beef and a great cheese would be perfect. Worth seeking out.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Barolo 2008
Lot L.BR111
Almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is deft, with elegant rosa canina and floral accents mingled with spice and berry fruit; it's classic young Barolo, and very pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's rich, with powerful elegant cherry fruit supported by rosa canina and delicate strawberry orange acidity that flows into a long clean bright spicy finish with a deft tannic underpinning. Quite pleasant, though very young, and needs another 2-3 years to come together. One could drink it now but it will reward those with patience.
90

Commendator Burlotto Acclivi Barolo 2008
Lot BRA 111
Lively almandine with brownish reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is intense, with powerful slightly peppery fruit supported by considerable spice and pleasant underlying rosa canina. Quite young, but promises very well. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with bright fresh cherry fruit supported by moderate strawberry acidity and by tannins that have a warm slightly peppery burr. Pleasant, and though it is quite young one could drink it, one would be forcing things to do so. I'd give it 3-5 years and then enjoy it with a hearty stew.
2 stars

Commendator Burlotto Vigneto Monvigliero Barolo 2008
Lot BRM 111
Almandine with brilliant almandine reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is deft, with rich rosa canina laced with nutmeg and spice, and moderate berry fruit that is still working through what it wants to be when it grows up. Quite elegant, and welcoming, but also quite clearly in mid stride,. On the palate it's full and very smooth with ripe rich fruit supported by spicy tannins that have that nutmeg imprint, and by sour berry fruit acidity that has some hints of orange to it and flows into a long spicy berry fruit finish. Beautiful but a toddler; it's a wine that needs 3-5 years and will be worth waiting for.
90-91

Commendator Burlotto Vigneto Cannubi Barolo 2008

Lot BRC 111
Lively almandine with brilliant almandine ruby reflections and bright almandine rim. The bouquet is powerful, with fairly rich cherry fruit supported by nutmeg laced spice and some peppery accents, and by slight vegetal notes. Pleasant, and rich, but doesn't have the grace of the Monvigliero at present, and may be somewhat broader shouldered in the future. It is now. On the palate it's bright and fresh, with brilliant berry fruit supported by tannins that have some nutmeg and mace spice, and hints of rosa canina to them, and by bright rather mineral acidity that flow into a clean mineral tannc finish. It's very young, younger even than the Monvigliero, and to say which will do what in the future is a bit of a crapshoot; the Cannubi is more muscular, whereas the Monvigliero is more graceful, and we will see what happens in the future. Because both wines need time.

Tasted at Dogliani: Cantina Clavesana

One of the high points (for me) of the IGP trip to Piemonte was our tour the Cantina Clavesana took us on of the Clavesana area between Dogliani and the Barolo appellation, and Luciano has written eloquently of the beauty and authenticity of the land and the wines.

This spring Nebbiolo Prima ended with an afternoon dedicated to Dolcetto; enough people signed up that there were two busses. I ended up on the one that began with Diano and then went to Dogliani, and ended up staying longer in Diano to taste everything, and then hitching a ride with another slow-tasting journalist to Dogliani. We arrived late enough that rather than taste through the wineries decided to sip and talk.

I did taste Clavesna, however, because though I did meet Anna Bracco, Clavesana's Director, at Vinitaly, I didn't have time to taste the wines then. So I grabbed the opportunity to taste them in Dogliani. I'm glad I did.

Cantina Clavesana Dolcetto di Dogliani 2010

This is the Cantina's primary wine, 1.5 million bottles and half of their total production. Violet with pale rim. The bouquet is moderately intense with berry fruit and violets supported by spice, some warmth, and underlying bitter almonds. On the palate it's bright, with lively cherry fruit supported by bitter berry fruit acidity and some greenish accents, with fairly light tannins that flow into a pleasant slightly greenish finish with a rather bitter burr. It's a classic food wine of the kind that you have to set two bottles of out, because one will simply vanish. The perfect day-to-day wine.
2 stars

Cantina Clavesana Il Clu di Clavesana Dogliani DOCG 2008
This wine is made from grapes gathered from 20 of their associates; it spent 6 months in large oak and several months thereafter in bottle. Total production is 150,000 bottles. Deep violet ruby with ruby rim. The bouquet is moderately rich, with berry fruit and spice supported by vegetal accents and some savory notes, while the palate is fairly rich, with sour berry fruit supported by deft acidity and tannins that have a warm peppery burr and flow into a warm sour berry fruit finish. It's quite approachable and more similar to a Dolcetto than to many Dogliani wines in that while there is concentration and power it doesn't go to extremes; it's quite approachable, and versatile, and will go quickly.
2 stars

Cantina Clavesana 110 Dogliani alla Giornata Dogliani DOCG 2008 This is made from a specific associate's vineyard, and a Giornata is a measure of land, what a man and a team of oxen can work in a day -- about a third of a hectare. Lively ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit laced with some greenish accents, cedar and slight leaf tobacco, and lively berry fruit acidity with some spice, and also some graphite shaving bitterness. On the palate it's fresh and fairly rich, with lively berry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins that have a warm dusky burr and are also supported by bright sour berry fruit acidity, flowing into a tart berry fruit finish. Nice depth and versatility; it's quite pleasant to drink and will work well with a variety of red meats, ranging from simple grilled meats through light stews. You will want more than a bottle, and it's the sort you may find yourself reaching for often.

Dolcetto di Diano: Many Good Wines

Dolcetto is Piemonte's traditional every day wine, and rightly so: It's light, fruity, lively, with moderate acidity, and a pleasant bitter almond tannic bite that allows it to go very well with foods. It's also as a rule quite fresh, with pleasant floral and bitter almond accents on the nose that only make it more inviting.

From a commercial standpoint, however, Dolcetto's fortunes have waned in the past 30 years, in part because of decreasing local consumption -- in the past, come fall, areas whose Dolcetto grapes were especially good were mobbed by people buying grapes to make wine at home, but those days are now gone -- and in part because Piemonte's Nebbiolo-based wines, Barolo and Barbaresco especially, have grabbed the international limelight thanks to their complexity and aging capacity.

Complexity, for Dolcetto, is not a problem, quite the contrary (incidentally, despite its name -- Dolce means sweet -- the wine Dolcetto is dry; the name probably derives from the fact that Dolcetto grapes are low in acidity and therefore taste especially sweet when chewed upon). What is, on the international stage, I think, is that it is not a wine for long aging, but is rather best enjoyed within 2-3 years of the harvest, after which time the delightful floral aromas and freshness begin to give way to more tertiary aromas of leaves and underbrush, while the fruit, which doesn't have that much acidity to support it, begins to settle. People find a bottle from Piemonte, whose wines have a reputation for long aging, buy it without noting the vintage, find something past its prime, and decide once burned twice shy.

Therefore, for consumers outside of Piemonte Dolcetto is a potential diamond in the rough, a delightful day-to-day wine awaiting discovery. They simply have to remember to look for the current vintages, which at present would be the 2010 and the 2009; I might also buy a 2008 but would be more cautious with a 2007 and ask to taste a bottle before I bought several.

And Dolcetto di Diano?

The Dolcetto varietal grows well in a broad swath of southern Piemonte, from the hills around Ovada and Acqui, though the Astigiano, and on past Alba to Diano and Dogliani; with respect to Nebbiolo it is more tolerant to altitude, and some of the best Dolcetto comes from vineyards that are higher than those where Nebbiolo is grown.

Diano is one of the two areas near Alba that is especially suited to Dolcetto (the other is Dogliani); it's located south of Alba and west of the Barolo production area, and the town proper sits upon a high ridge formed by a thick sequence of pale interbedded clays and more compact calcareous layers; if you drive up to the town on a sunny day the bedrock, where it crops out, is almost blindingly white. The soils the vines grow on are clayey and calcareous, and the Disciplinare governing production states that the vineyards must be on sunny hillsides; flat ground, damp areas, northern exposures, and altitudes greater than 550 meters above sea level are forbidden. Minimum planting density is 3,500 vines per hectare (about 2.5 acres), and the maximum allowable yield of grapes is 8 metric tons per hectare (this translates into about 5,600 liters of wine); this is, by modern standards, generous, and many winemakers will reduce production to increase complexity and concentration.

In addition to the Vino Base released the spring after the harvest, winemakers can also make Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore, which must age for at least 10 months prior to release.

There is one element of confusion to Diano: Since it has long been known for Dolcetto, and the name "Dolcetto di Diano" doesn't stand out that much from the various other Docetti made in the area, at some point some of the winemakers in Diano began simply labeling their bottles "Diano D'Alba." The custom is by now well established, and therefore depending upon the winemaker, you will find either Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba or simply Diano D'Alba.

Enough talk. I tasted the wines this spring, in a tasting organized by the folks at Albeisa for journalists attending the Nebbiolo Prima presentation of Barolo, Barbaresco, and Roero. They made for a very different, and very enjoyable change of pace.

Veglio Giovanni Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Lively ruby with white rim. The bouquet is fresh, with violets and berry fruit supported by clean spice and some peppery accents; Fresh. On the palate it's bright and rich, with lively bitter berry fruit supported by violets and some bitter almond accents coupled with clean bright acidity; the tannins are lively and substantial as Dolcetto's are wont to be. A classic Dolcetto that will go quickly.
2 stars

Savigliano Fratelli Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet ruby with violet rim. The bouquet is fairly bright, with violets and some vegetal accents supported by berry fruit and slight acidity. On the palate it's powerful with intense violet-laced plum cherry fruit -- it's a bit riper than some -- supported by dusky tannins that have powerful bitter accents and flow into a decidedly bitter finish mitigated by some berry fruit. Pleasant but more charged, a wine that I would find excessive for daily use, though it will work well with roasts or stews.
2 stars

Veglio Michelino Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Barrel Sample
Ruby with purple highlights. Nice bouquet, with berry fruit that has some sour notes and bitter almonds. Quite fresh. The palate is bright, with rich fruit supported by tannins that have a bitter bite and nice acidity. Promising.

Veglio Michelino Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2009

Pale ruby with violet reflections and pink rim. The bouquet is bright and fresh, with violets and raspberry cherry fruit supported by deft acidity. Quite graceful. On the palate it's bright, with lively berry fruit supported by bright berry fruit acidity and sweet tannins that have a slight burr and flow into a bright slightly mineral berry fruit finish. Graceful, and will go very fast.
88-90

Cantina Salvano Fosco Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Distinctive bottle with string tie and red sealing wax to top the string. Inky violet. The bouquet is powerful and a bit dusky, with berry fruit supported by violets and greenish vegetal accents, some hardwood ash, spice, and slight lactic acid. Gives an impression of extraction. On the palate it's ample and quite smooth, with rich cherry plum fruit supported by slight berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are very smooth and flow into a clean bitter finish. It's an extreme wine with respect to the others, rounder and smoother, and is not what I'd call a day-to-day wine; drink it with drier meats, and you will enjoy it if you like the charged style.
2 stars

Abrigo Fratelli Vigna Pietrin Diano D'Alba Superiore DOCG 2009

Lively violet ruby with violet rim. The bouquet is rich, with violets and red berry fruit supported by some menthol and slight peppery spice. Quite fresh. On the palate it's full and quite round, with fairly powerful cherry fruit that gains direction from greenish almond bitterness and flows into a fairly long warm cherry finish with bitter underpinning. Pleasant, and as one would expect from its being a Superiore, it's not a day-to-day wine, but one that will work nicely with more substantial meat dishes.
2 stars

Alario Claudio Costa Figre Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2009

Deep violet with violet rim. The bouquet is fairly intense in a duskier key, with violets and wet leather mingled with berry fruit and some wood smoke; it's not quite as fresh as some. On the palate it's ample, with moderate fruit supported by tannins that are fairly smooth, and by moderate acidity. I found it somewhat settled.
1 star

Abrigo Giovanni Sorì dei Crava Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

The wine had just been bottled, and was somewhat shocked, with a muted nose that was not together. On the palate it's full, with moderate fruit supported by savory balsamic accents and spice coupled with warm berry fruit acidity, flowing into a long warm rather balsamic finish. It promises well in a fairly graceful, not explosive key.

Abrigo Giovanni Garabei Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2009

Lively violet with white rim and black reflections. The bouquet is fresh and floral, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by some lactic acidity -- scalded milk -- and by fresh spice; it's graceful but not explosive. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich berry fruit supported by minerality and delicate spice that flow into a clean slightly spicy finish, while the tannins are very smooth and flow into a slightly bitter finish. A modern delicate, slightly more restrained rendition of Dolcetto.

Rigo Secondo Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2009

A note: I had tasted this at Vinitaly, and because of the time allotted at Diano simply swished it, sniffed, and tasted, and wrote very good after jotting a score of 88-90. The note below is from Vinitaly, where, as you will note, the score was the same.

Lively cherry with violet accents. The bouquet is classic, with rich violets mingled with berry fruit and bitter almonds, and hints of underbrush as well, and some deft spice that keeps things moving right along. On the palate it's quite nice, with rich prune laced fruit shot with violets and graphite bitterness and warmth, and supported by mineral acidity and tannins that have a graphite shaving bitter burr and flow into a clean fresh finish. A classic Dolcetto that will drink very well with simple grilled meats, or light stews, and that will also be a nice cookout wine, working well with both hot and cold foods.
88-90

Azienda Agricola Produttori Dianesi Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Lively ruby with some orange in the rim. The bouquet is fresh, with violets and berry fruit supported by some vegetal accents and bright greenish acidity. On the palate it's full and rich, with lively cherry and berry fruit supported by sweet tannins and some almond bitterness. Very approachable, though somewhat lighter than some, and will drink quickly with simple foods, including drier meats. You'll likely want a second bottle.
2 stars

Prandi Giovanni Sörì Colombè Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Lively violet with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with some berry fruit and some scalded milk -- it was bottle shocked, and the palate provides a better indication; it's bright, fairly light, and more acidic than many, with sour cherry raspberry fruit supported by tannins that have a greenish peppery burr and flow into a bright sour cherry and raspberry finish with pleasant bitter almond underpinning. It's a wine to set out and drink, and will go fast, with simple grilled meats, or fired meats and vegetables too.
2 stars

Poderi Sinaglio Sorì Bric Maiolica Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet with violet rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with violets and berry fruit supported by some greenish spice and deft greenish acidity, as well as hints of sweetness. On the palate it's bright, with moderately intense cherry and red berry fruit with some raspberry accents supported by moderate acidity and some sweetness, with underlying tannins whose burr provides definition. It's a little lighter than some, and very easy to drink. Expect it to vanish.
2 stars

Briccomaiolica Sorì Bricco Maiolica Diano D'Alba Superiore DOCG 2009

Deep violet ruby with violet reflections and pale rim. The bouquet is reduced at first sniff, but as it oxygenates reveals red berry fruit and some spice. On the palate it's full, with moderately intense sour berry fruit supported by warmth and slightly balsamic tannins that flow into a warm berry fruit finish. It's more heavy set than some of the others, and lacks that light deftness that distinguishes some of the other Diani.
1 star

Boffa F.lli Sorì Paradiso Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Violet with violet rim. The bouquet is bright, with violets and berry fruit supported by greenish accents, and still coming together but promising. On the palate it's bright and fresh, with lively cherry fruit supported by red berry fruit sweetness and tannins that have a dusky burr, and by sour berry fruit accents that flow into a warm tart blackberry finish with clean tannic underpinning. It will go quite fast and be quite versatile.
2 stars

Camparo Sorì Bric Camparo Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet with cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with some lactic accents and berry fruit; it's still coming together. On the palate it's rich and rather sweet, with violets and red berry fruit supported by tannins more than acidity and flows into a warm tannic finish. It's more extracted and sweeter than most, and also more particular, though some berry fruit acidity does emerge in the finish to confer warmth.
1 star

Casavecchia Sorì Bruni Diano D'Alba 2010

Deep violet ruby with cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with violets and some bitter accents mingled with some herbal accents and bitter greenish almond notes. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderately intense berry fruit supported by warmth and tannins that are fairly smooth, and flow into a clean bright berry fruit finish with some dusky bitter notes. Pleasant and will drink quickly; though there is some vegetal acidity it's not quite as bright as some of the others.
2 stars

Renzo Castella Enotecnico Rivolta Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet ruby with lively cherry ruby rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with violet laced sour berry fruit supported by dusky bitter almonds, clean spice, and some vegetal accents with slight underlying sweetness. The palate is bright, with lively cherry and blackberry fruit supported by moderate mineral acidity and by tannins that are smooth, with a slight spicy burr, and flow into a clean, fresh, cherry and forest berry fruit finish. Quite pleasant, and will go very fast with everything from fried foods to quickly grilled meats to the fixings of a cookout.
88-90

Angelo Colla Sorì du Rabin Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet ruby with white rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with violets and berry fruit laced with bitter almonds and some elegant greenish accents. Very pleasant to sniff, and as it opens slight candied fruit accents also emerge. On the palate it's full, with rich fairly sweet cherry blackberry fruit supported by mineral acidity and tannins that flow into a fairly bright mineral tannic finish with berry fruit underpinning. It's a bit sweeter than some (though not a sweet wine), and this will make it that much more approachable for those who prefer wines that are not aggressive, while it does have complexities for the "serious" wine drinker too. In short, versatile and for a broad audience.
2 stars

Il Palazzotto Vigna Santa Lucia Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet with black reflections and violet rim. The bouquet is muted, though swishing brings up some berry fruit and slight underbrush; it's still coming together. On the palate it's full and fairly sweet, with berry fruit supported by some berry fruit acidity, and by warmth and tannins that have a slight burr, and flow into a fairly long warm finish. A little less bright than some, and a little more languid.
2 stars

Gerlotto Sorì Vigna Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2010

Deep violet with violet rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with violets and berry fruit laced with blackberry sweetness and some underbrush. On the palate it's full, and bright, with lively sour berry fruit supported by clean bright berry fruit acidity that has some bitter accents, and flows into a clean fresh tannic finish. Quite pleasant, and will be extremely versatile at table.
2 stars

Cascina Sorba G.e.m.m.a. Cascina Sorba Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba DOCG 2009

Violet ruby with cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with berry fruit and some spice mingled with vegetal accents. On the palate it's ample and fairly soft, with fairly bright fruit supported by deft acidity and smooth tannins; by comparison with some of the others the bitter almond accents typical of Dolcetto are less pronounced.
2 stars

Le Cecche Diano D'Alba DOCG

Impenetrable deep violet ink with violet rim. The bouquet is bright, with cherry fruit supported by violets and by some bitter almonds, with greenish vegetal accents as well. On the palate it's fresh, with bright berry fruit supported by moderately intense tannins and dusky bitterness with pleasing savory notes too. Pleasant and quite approachable thanks also to richness of fruit; it will work very well with foods and go quite fast.

Garantito IGP: Clavesana 2009 Dolcetto di Dogliani DOCG

An intraweekly post from Luciano Pignataro, who was very much impressed by the Clavesana area when we went to the Langhe to taste wines.

If you are are simple tourists, this week you can skip over this column. If you instead prefer to travel rather than just hurry though, take this Dolcetto and use it as a compass to discover a Low Cost Langa that is certainly older and more intriguing than what people generally think of at the mention of Langa.

Yes, because the wine routes can lead directly from the Barolo Boys who made amazing waves in the 1990s to a 5-Euro bottle produced by the cooperative winery in Clavesana, whose 350 members turn their attention to Dolcetto in the Langa hills.

The difference is quite simple: Around Alba nothing but vineyards, like the fields of grain between Lucania and the Murge, and here, at a 30-minute drive, oak forests, chestnuts, vegetable patches, quiet little towns just like ours in the South. The rural spirit of a land not yet overrun by junk TV.

Here one understands how important cooperative wineries are for guaranteeing income from agriculture, and the ties of the land with a grape varietal, Dolcetto, which 30 years ago was much more in demand than Nebbiolo. Then things changed, thanks to the increase in the importance of exports, coupled with a decrease in local consumption.

Dolcetto is not an Important Wine, rather it's fresh and floral, with nice structure, and perfect for the traditional dishes of the region, starting with the wonderful bell peppers of Carmagnola in anchovy sauce. Fermented only in steel, steel as bright as the steely determination of Anna Bracco, the Cantina's managing director, who gave us a tour one evening, winding beautifully up and down the misty hills as dusk came on. We prefer Dolcetto like this, it has no need of wood to make it enjoyable, just good food.

Drink it during chestnut season, and with pasta e fagioli, and with white meats: it will captivate you, and invite you to discover this corner of Italy, a solid hard-working corner far from the limelight and the travel guides.

If you're travelers and not tourists, of course.

A picture for the day, and Tasted at Vinitaly: Aurelio Settimo

To begin, the picture: Not from Vinitaly, but rather from (if I remember right) Alba Wines. In any case, Pin, a wonderful guy and an excellent sommellier, pouring a covered bottle for us to taste.

Returning to Aurelio Settimo, I look forward to seeing Tiziana at Vinitaly every year -- despite the hubub that surrounds her stand, the wines invite concentration and reflection, and strange as it may seem give me an opportunity to (briefly) get away from it all.

This year they also offered an opportunity for reflection, because she was pouring not just the most recent (2007) Barolo, but th 2006 as well, and also a couple of older vintages. Long term readers know that I had my doubts about the 2006 vintage when it was released, and though I am not as drastic now, I continue to think that it's a difficult vintage that will require considerable time to emerge. When it does it will be very nice, and therefore unless you absolutely must drink it now, set it aside and (if you like young Barolo) enjoy the 2007 vintage, which is readier.

Aurelio Settimo Dolcetto D'Alba 2009
Lot A 11
Lively cherry ruby with cherry rim. The bouquet is quite fresh, with considerable sour berry fruit acidity and clean spice with pleasant bitter almonds as well, and some alcohol too. Quite elegant and very fresh. On the palate it's bright, and rather tannic, with rich sour cherry fruit laced with violets nd supported by tannins that have a dusky burr and flow into a clean rather bitter finish. A classic food wine that will work very well with grilled meats or light roasts, and go quite quickly, supporting what it's served with.
2 stars

Aurelio Settimo Langhe Nebbiolo 2006
Lot F10
Elegant almandine with brilliant reflections and garnet rim. The bouquet is elegant, though grudging -- it doesn't want to reveal itself -- with rosa canina and sour berry fruit supported by alcohol and some spice with slight hints of leather and leaf tobacco, and a savory underpinning. On the palate it's elegant, with deft sour cherry fruit supported by hints of roses and savory notes, and by tannins that have an angry peppery burr and flow into a fairly long tannic finish. It's graceful, but still hampered by the tannins, which continue to be rather angry and need more time; this said one could drink it now, and enjoy it considerably, but one would need a succulent cut of meat with some fat to balance the tannins, say leg of lamb or even lamb chops -- including fried lamb chops. I would expect it to age well for close to a decade more.
2 stars

Aurelio Settimo Barolo 2005
Lot A09
Pale almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to an orange nail. The bouquet is quite pleasant, with some rosa canina and pleasant spice, with leather and leaf tobacco and underlying berry fruit that's not too intense; it gives the impression of being from a cooler vintage but is quite graceful. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are warm and smooth with some greenish vegetal accents that are again indicative of a cooler vintage, and it flows into a clean bright tannic finish with lasting warmth. Graceful in a lesser vintage key, and very much alive; it will drink well now with grilled meats or hearty roasts, but also has considerable aging potential, nd will become pleasantly ethereal with time.
88-90

Aurelio Settimo Barolo 2006
Lot B10
Pale almandine with brilliant reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, with delicate rosa canina supported by tart berry fruit and some greenish accents with quite a bit of alcohol and some leaf tobacco. It's still quite young, and needs time, but is developing nicely. On the palate it's full, with rich cherry fruit on the outset that is still interrupted by a rush of angry peppery tannins that flow into a warm tannic finish. The tannins are green and rather strident, and the wine needs time to work its way through them, at present it's like a person in a tizzy who REALLY WANTS TO BE LEFT ALONE. If you must drink a bottle now, I would serve it with a succulent, fairly well done leg of lamb or a crown roast, cooked medium rare and sliced thick. But given the choice I would let it sit for at least 5 years, because it has nice potential that has yet to emerge.
2 stars

Aurelio Settimo Barolo 2007
Lot B11
Elegant almandine with brilliant black reflections and almandine in the rim. The bouquet is elegant, with red berry fruit supported by savory notes and fairly rich berry fruit acidity, while there is also alcohol and there are hints of rosa canina. Very young, but promising. On the palate it's a distinct step up from the 2006, with rich cherry fruit supported by sour berry fruit acidity and by sweet smooth tannins that have a slight vegetal underpinning but are already fairly smooth, and flow into a long clean bright finish with deft tannic underpinning. Very nice, and though woefully young is already drinkable; if you must it would be nice with a steak, but it will richly reward you if you have the patience to give it time.
91-2

Aurelio Settimo Rocche Dell'Annunziata Barolo 2005
Lot G08
Lively almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with leaf tobacco and some spice supported by acidity and some berry fruit; there's also some leather and a degree of minerality, while there isn't too much fruit. Cooler vintage. On the palate it's elegant, with moderately intense sour cherry fruit supported by deft sour cherry acidity and smooth sweet tannins that flow into a fairly long clean sour cherry finish with a brambly warm tannic underpinning. It's more graceful than the base, but again clearly from a cooler vintage, and in this context quite graceful and has a great deal to say.
90-91

Aurelio Settimo Rocche Dell'Annunziata Barolo 2007
Lot LC11
Elegant almandine with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is delicate, with ripe berry fruit supported by peppery spice and some leaf tobacco, with hints of Risa Canina too. It's quite elegant but at the outset of a long journey. On the palate it's rich, with elegant sour cherry fruit supported by fairly bright berry fruit acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that do have a slight burr, and flow into a fairly long clean fresh berry fruit finish with savory tannic underpinning. It's quite elegant, but extremely young and needs time to get together; by comparison with the 2007 base it's a bit further behind now but will I think surpass it handily with time. A wine to set aside.
90

Aurelio Settimo Riserva Rocche Barolo 2004
Elegant almandine with almandine rim. The bouquet is eye opening, along the lines of a religious experience, with leaf tobacco and spice supporting rosa canina and some smoky noes, with berry fruit as well. It's very young but already beautiful and clearly still coming together. On the palate it's beautiful with rich leathery fruit supported by savory berry fruit acidity and sweet tannins that have slightest hazelnut bitterness and flow into a long warm berry fruit finish; it's quite quick to write, but extraordinarily elegant, and will do beautiful things with time. Most impressive.
93-4

Aurelio Settimo Rocche Barolo 2000
Tiziana finds the 2007 to have many similarities with the 2000 when it was young, and therefore brought a bottle of it that I found some of in my glass. It's elegant almandine with black reflections and almandine rim, and has a rich bouquet with rosa canina and leaf tobacco supported by berry fruit and brandied cherries, and deft spice; there's rare harmony and rather than pick aromas as they emerge it's a wine that's fun to simply contemplate. On the palate it's rich and elegant, with powerful cherry fruit supported by deft sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth and supple, and flow into a clean savory berry fruit finish; it's again quick to write but extremely harmonious, and one of those wines that captures the attention. Most impressive, and if you're lucky enough to have 2 bottles, keep one for a looooong time.

Bruna Grimaldi: Nebbiolo and More from Grinzane Cavour

The last day of Nebbiolo Prima, I paid a visit to Bruna Grimaldi, who has a small winery in Grinzane Cavour, with vineyards in Serralunga, Diano D'Alba and Cornegliano as well. It was a very nice way to finish up an extremely busy week.

Bruna Grimaldi Valscura Langhe Chardonnay 2009
This is fermented in steel and then spends a brief time in steel, with battonage. Pale brassy green with brassy reflections and white rim. The bouquet is fresh, with lively citric fruit supported by greenish accents and a fair amount of berry fruit acidity. Quite fresh, and as it opens savory notes also emerge. On the palate it's rich, with powerful honeydew melon and loquat fruit supported by some sweetness and fairly brisk acidity that flow into a clean bright loquat and honeydew melon finish with honeydew melon sweetness that is fairly long. Pleasant, and will drink quite nicely as an aperitif, or with cheeses and with cheese based dishes, including spicier herbal cheeses along the lines of gorgonzola, perhaps more in a dish (penne al gorgonzola) than by itself.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi San Martino Dolcetto D'Alba 2008
This is bottled in July, after several months in a mixture of steel and cement. With the 2009 the malolactic fermentation took off immediately. The 2008 wasn't quite as quick, but was early, and spontaneous. The wine is lively cherry ruby with brilliant reflections and cherry rim paling to white. The bouquet is fresh, with rich cherry fruit laced with floral accents and deft almond blossoms mingled with bitter almond acidity. Quite fresh, and very pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's medium bodied, with rich berry fruit supported by moderately intense acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fresh prune finish that's fairly sweet with almond accents. Quite pleasant, a lark of a wine that will drink very well with cold cuts or simple grilled meats, and also be nice with simple meat based pasta dishes, or even with pizza. It's a bit softer than some -- less biting tannins -- and as a result comes across as a bit sweeter; this is something to keep in mind if you prefer a more tannic Dolcetto, but it is quite pleasant and the sweetness is frankly seductive.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Scassa Barbera D'Alba Superiore 2007
This spent 14 months in a mixture of large botti and older tonneaux. Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry ruby rim. The bouquet is closed at the outset, though swishing brings up lively cherry and forest berry fruit supported by brisk dusky acidity and clean greenish accents; it's quite pleasant, and though Bruna told me that it was oaked it's not as oaky as many oaked Barbere are. In other words, next to a wine in steel one will note a difference, but oak supports rather than take center stage. On the palate it's ample and smooth with rich cherry fruit supported by clean smooth tannins and by clean bright acidity; the oak is more apparent on the palate, in the sense of a softness and a polish that one doesn't find in unoaked Barbera, but is quite pleasant. It will drink very well with grilled meats or light stews, and also has the capacity to age nicely for 4-5 years.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Briccola Nebbiolo d'Alba 2008
Recently bottled; the vineyards are in Diano D'alba, and it spent 14 months in tonneaux (not new) followed by a couple of months in tank. It's elegant almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is elegant, with rich floral accents mingled with rosa canina and bright cherry acidity supported by cherry fruit and some greenish accents and some brambles. It's quite young, but pleasant to sniff. On the palate it's bright, with lively sour cherry fruit supported by greenish accents and bright acidity, and by sweet tannins that have a slight burr and flow into a clean bright cherry finish with slight underlying sweetness (the wine is dry). Very pleasant, and will drink quite well with simple grilled meats or light stews, and also with roasts; because of the sweetness in the finish it will also work well with more highly spiced dishes that might choke at a wine without the sweetness. A goulash, for example, or ribs in bbq sauce. Expect it to go quickly.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Barolo Camilla DOCG 2006
This is from Grinzane Cavour, and is from a vineyard that's 8 years old. The wine is named indirectly after Camilla, one of Cavour's sisters -- he had several poderi and named each after a sister. It was bottled in November, and is deep almandine with black reflections and almandine rim paling to orange. The bouquet is fresh, and quite young, with greenish accents and cedar mingled with rosa canina and some berry fruit. It's deft, but -- having been told -- does reveal a certain youth of the vineyard, which will have more to offer in the future. On the palate it's ample, with rich cherry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins and by deft berry fruit acidity that flow into a clean slightly sour, slightly greenish berry fruit finish. Pleasant, and though quite young displays considerable depth; it will drink well now with grilled meats or light stews, and will also age nicely for a number of years, though I don't think it will be tremendously long-lived -- the vineyard contributes what maturity it can but can only go so far. But I did enjoy it.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina Barolo DOCG 2006
Bottled in August. It's deeper black almandine ruby with black reflections and more charged rim than the Camilla; it's from an older vineyard at the end of the Serralunga area whose elevation ranges from 370 to 420 m ASL. The bouquet is intense, with dusky berry fruit supported by a fair amount of spice and some greenish accents laced with cedar, and also some graphite shaving bitterness. Very young, and needs time. On the palate it's ample, with rich berry fruit supported by smooth sweet tannins and by fairly bright berry fruit acidity, while the tannins flow onto a clean berry fruit finish with some sacalded milk bitterness that is due to the youth of the wine. It's quite pleasant but needs at least a couple of years to get its bearings and will age nicely for a decade or more. Expect it to do interesting things with time.
2 stars

Bruna Grimaldi Badarina Barolo DOCG 2004
Deep almandine with black reflections and almandine nail; by comparison with the 2006 it's similar, but the nail is more pronounced. The bouquet is powerful, and still very young, with berry fruit laced with leaf tobacco and some hints of white truffle, and also savory spice. It gives an impression of austere distance coupled with power. On the palate it's ample, with rich cherry fruit supported by sweet berry fruit acidity and by mentholated tannins that are ample and smooth, and flow into a clean savory berry fruit finish that has some pleasant greenish notes, and reveals hints of plums as the acidity fades. Pleasant and still in mid stride; one could open it now but doing so is close to committing an infanticide; it give much more of itself in the future if you have the patience to wait. 10 or even 15 years.

Dolcetto and Dolcetto 2007

Winemakers tend to be a sociable lot, and if you visit a winery at (roughly) lunchtime, you may well find yourself invited to stick around for a bite, especially if it's a family-run operation. The wine will of course be from the cellar, but you shouldn't expect the flagship wine. Rather, what people dink every day, and if you're in Piemonte's Langhe (home to Barolo and Barbaresco, among others), chances are you'll be drinking Dolcetto.

Despite the name, which translates as little sweet one, Dolcetto is a dry red wine, with characteristic bitter almond and berry fruit aromas on the nose, and rich lively fruit on the palate; by comparison with many other Italian red wines, especially Barbera, it is low in acidity, and were it not for its lively tannic bitterness it would be rather flat.

But there is that bitterness, and the end result can be quite graceful in a medium bodied sort of way -- the perfect wine to complement all sorts of foods, from carne cruda all'albese, the chopped raw beef that's Piemonte's answer to steak tartare, to pasta with the drippings of a roast or a red sauce (or even agnolotti, the classic Piemontese stuffed pasta with a meat filling) through simple grilled meats or light stews. Small wonder then that Dolcetto is Piemonte's preferred vino a tutto pasto, or mealtime wine.

The Dolcetto grape is now primarily grown in a broad swath of southern Piemonte, from Dogliani, which is west of and reaches higher elevations than the Barolo production zone, through Diano and Alba, and on east though Asti, Langhe Monregalesi, Acqui, and finally Ovada, in the Alessandrino. According to Nicolas Belfrage, the grape, which he calls "characterful," originated in the Acqui-Ovada area sometime before 1800 -- it's mentioned in a permit dating to 1799 -- and spread west with time. It's also grown western Liguria, where it's called Ormeasco, and is rare.

From an administrative standpoint, Piemonte's Dolcetto can be divided into seven major appellations: Dolcetto di Dogliani, Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba, Dolcetto D'Alba, Dolcetto D'Asti, Dolcetto Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto D'Acqui, and Dolcetto di Ovada. There is also a new entity, Dogliani DOCG, which takes the place of the old Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore.

Though one might expect the appellations in which Dolcetto is a the primary red wine produced in the area (all except Asti and Alba) to produce the best wines because the winemakers don't have other reds to distract them, this isn't the case: Some of the finest Dolcetti are from around Alba. What one does note is a tendency to aim for greater power in some of the other appellations, especially Dogliani, which has gone so far as to rename its Dolcetto Superiore di Dogliani DOC Dogliani DOCG. I have mixed feelings about this, in part because people unfamiliar with Dolcetto appellations -- the majority, I would venture to say -- will probably not make the Dogliani-Dolcetto connection when they see wines simply labeled Dogliani, and therefore not know what they are (I have the same reservations about the Dolcetto di Diano D'Alba Appellation, which doesn't require its producers to include the word Dolcetto on their labels).

The other thing that bothers me about Dogliani is this aim for power and desire to bulk up the wines; when I visited the area a few years ago a number of producers told me that their wines had more dry extract than Barolo, that they were therefore Important Wines worthy of aging. While it's true that dry extract gives a quick-and-dirty estimate of concentration and structure, a concentrated Dolcetto is still a Dolcetto, whose hallmark (for me) is lively freshness of bouquet and sassy freshness on the palate. A Dolcetto that spends several years in bottle will loose that freshness, and, to be brutal, bring to mind a 40-year old who was beautiful in pictures taken 20 years ago, but has since sagged noticeably.

Bottom line: Dolcetto is a wine to enjoy when it's young and fresh. It will hold 3-4 years, but I would be leery of one that's much older.

And this brings us to production: Dolcetto the wine is a monovitigno, or single-vine wine made just from Dolcetto grapes; yields range some from Appellation to appellation, with Acqui setting a maximum yield of 9.5 metric tons per hectare for the base wine, to Dogliani setting a maximum of 7 tons/hectare. These are maximums, and many producers will be harvesting significantly less to increase concentration. Fermentation is generally in steel, with minimum alcohol level ranging from about 11% for base wines, and up to 13 for Superiore and Dogliani. Dolcetto base can be released in the spring/summer following the harvest, while Dolcetto Superiore and Dogliani must be held longer, until November for Dogliani and until the January following the harvest, e.g. January 2006 for a 2005 vintage wine, for many of the Superiori.

Winding down, a couple of words about the vintages presented and some quick general impressions. The vino d'annata, or vintage wine, is 2006, which was a very nice vintage, with rich bouquets and lively zesty flavors. Many of the Superiori are 2005s, which are a bit more problematic. 2005 saw quite a bit of rain, and cooler temperatures, so the grapes didn't ripen quite as well, and consequently some of the wines display less fruit, falling back upon tannic bitterness for structure.

Also, a couple of thoughts on Dogliani DOCG as opposed to Dolcetto di Dogliani and the other Dolcetti. I found the Dogliani DOCG wines taken as a group to quite alcoholic, and very dependent upon the characteristics of the vintage. Those from 2005 were concentrated but lacking in fruit and freshness, and a fellow taster said the more he swished the less he found because the alcohol covered everything up. The 2006 Dogliani DOCG was a distinct step up, with much brighter fruit coupled with more body and more acidity; I felt the wines had considerably more character than the 2005s, and also than the 2006 Dolcetto di Dogliani. However, I found in some of them a conscious effort to smooth the tannins that left the wines overbuffed, and to be frank cut them off at the knees. The bottom line is that Dogliani DOCG has yet to determine what it really is. Some is quite nice, displaying greater richness in the traditional mold of Dolcetto, while some is attempting, with considerably less success, to be Important. I obviously prefer the former.

This said, the wines, tasted the week of September 3 2007. They're divided (roughly) by appellation.

Cavallero Lorenzo Vigneto Cardin Dolcetto D'Asti DOC 2006
Lot 7-080
Impenetrable pigeon blood ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is bright, with lively red berry fruit supported by bitter almonds and moderate underbrush with a leafy tannic underpinning. With more swishing the pungency increases, and gains sulfurous overtones. On the palate it's full, and fruit driven, with slightly jammy cherry fruit that has a sweet undercurrent to it supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have a warm bitter bite to them and flow into a clean slightly greenish bitter tannic finish. It's direct, in an up-front sort of way, and will drink well with quickly grilled meats or light stews. A pity about the sulfurous pungency, because otherwise it would have been a good option if you like wines that have a slightly sweeter cast to them.

Cavallero Lorenzo Dolcetto D'Asti DOC 2006
Lot 7-027
Deep pigeon blood ruby with cherry rim and black reflections. The bouquet is rich, and quite young, with floral accents, a mixture of violets and almond blossoms, mingled with jammy plum blackberry fruit. On the palate it's bright, with lively red currant and cherry fruit with some plum accents supported by clean acidity and by tannins that have a slight greenish burr and flow into a clean bright finish that gains depth from tannic bitterness. Pleasant in a cheeky sort of way, and will drink very well with hearty meat based pasta dishes, grilled meats, or light stews, and will go quickly. Perfect for a cookout, too. Worth seeking out.

Deep cherry ruby with black reflections. The bouquet is fresh, in an oddly light sort of way, with a mixture of dust and floral aromas that seem somehow contrived. On the palate it's light with tart fruit supported by tannins that have a distinctly greenish feel to them, and flow into a fairly long bitter finish. It's direct, and simple, and will drink well with simple red meats.

They also make a Rosato from Dolcetto, which is labeled vino da tavola, by racking the must off the skins. It's pale salmon with pink reflections, and has a bright bouquet with lively raspberry fruit; it's quite fresh and one wouldn't necessarily guess it to be Dolcetto. On the palate it's full, smooth, and soft, with pleasant cherry laced raspberry fruit with clean red currant acidity that flows into a fairly long finish. A refreshing wine for cold cuts, hearty soups, lighter grilled meats (or fish), and picnics.

Ghera Dolcetto D'Ovada DOC 2006
Impenetrable pyrope ruby with purple cherry rim. Poured ink. The bouquet is moderately intense, with floral accents mingled with gum Arabic and some berry fruit. On the palate it's medium bodied, with moderate fruit supported by considerable bitter tannins that flow into a clean bitter finish that lays a wash over the tongue. It's tannic and not as fruit driven as I'd have liked, and though there isn't sulfur per se it is a bit pungent. Drink it with simple meats or light stews.

Ghera Albareto Dolcetto D'Ovada Superiore DOC 2005
Deep cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly bright, with red berry fruit and alcohol mingled with some greenish spicy accents and some underbrush that's not quite pungent but definitely damp leaves. On the palate it's full, with ample fairly bitter fruit supported by moderate acidity and tannins that have an oaky bitterness to them that brings (again) wet leaves to mind. If you like this rather rustic style it shows polish, but you have to like this style, in which fruit is giving way to tertiary aromas and flavors. It will drink well with red meats.

On the palate it's fairly bright, with sour berry fruit supported by bitter accents and tannins that have a greenish burr and flow into a clean bitter finish. It's pleasant enough though a tad aged; the nose isn't as fresh as I'd have wanted, and the palate will, I fear, follow fairly soon. On the palate it's bright, with fairly rich decidedly sour fruit that one wouldn't have expected from the nose, supported by fairly smooth tannins that flow into a clean sour finish. Castello di Tagliolo Dolcetto di Ovada DOC 2001
Deep ruby. The bouquet is penetrating, with underbrush and a fair amount of alcohol and some cedar; it's nicely balanced in a clearly mature way. On the palate it's quite rich, with pleasant fruit supported by lively acidity and a considerable volume of greenish tannins that flow into a clean slightly bitter finish. It's clearly much older than one would expect a Dolcetto to be, but has held up very well and it is nice, though something of an enological curiosity; if you like a rather earthy mature style it is quite nice, and eye-opening proof of Dolcetto's ability to age when from a good vintage and properly stored. But you do have to like the style.

On the palate it's ample and smooth with moderate berry fruit supported by smooth bitter tannins, while there is a little acidity to provide direction, but not much. It's direct, and unassuming, and though I'd have liked a little more fruit it will drink well with simple grilled meats or light stews, and will also be nice with hearty pasta dishes or legume based soups.

They also make a Vino Spumante Brut Rosato, which is a Brachetto fermented to dryness, and is labeled as a Vino da Tavola. It's pale salmon in color and has an intriguing bouquet with bright raspberry fruit supported by raspberry acidity and an impression of sweetness. Pleasant. On the palate it's dry, but not too dry, with bright raspberry fruit that gains direction from acidity and greenish notes, while fullness comes from the sparkle too. Pleasant, and will be quite nice as an aperitif or with creamy dishes. Curious about the wine? It's a return to the past of sorts: They used to make a Brachetto Rosé, and decided to add bubbles to it. The result is quite drinkable.

Cherry ruby with cherry rim and black reflections. The bouquet is eye opening, because it smells very much like Aleatico, a sweet red dessert wine from the Tuscan coast -- candied slightly brandied cherries with some Regina Claudia plum overtones. Unexpected for a Dolcetto. On the palate it's dry, with tannic slightly sour berry fruit that gains direction from slight sour cherry acidity, and is supported by tannins that have bitter oak leaf overtones. Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and ruby rim. The bouquet is a bit tarter than I might have expected, with hints of spice mingled with red berry fruit and some greenish accents. On the palate it's bright, with clean red berry fruit supported by tart slightly greenish acidity and by tannins that have clean greenish accents. It's quite direct, and will drink well with simple meats, including, because of its tartness, fried foods. It will also work well at a cookout, and in the proper setting will go quite quickly.

Impenetrable pigeon blood ruby with cherry rim; it looks like poured ink. The bouquet is fairly rich, with berry fruit supported by some sweetness (selected yeasts can give this) and slight mentholated accents, while there is also some bitter almond. On the palate it's ample, with fairly bright slightly sour cherry blackberry fruit supported by moderate acidity and clean slightly splintery oak leaf tannins that flow into a clean tannic finish with savory accents. It's pleasant, and will drink quite well with succulent grilled meats or light stews, and also has the wherewithal to stand up to lighter roasts, though I might hesitate before game.

On the palate it's ample and fairly sweet, with moderately intense dusky plum fruit that gains direction from some acidity, and is supported by clean bitter tannins with greenish accents that flow into a bitter finish. On the palate it's ample and soft, with moderately intense red berry fruit that gains direction from sour cherry acidity and is supported by clean sweet tannins that have a slight greenish burr and flow into a clean bitter finish. Impenetrable pyrope with cherry ruby rim. The bouquet is muted; swishing brings up plum fruit mingled with some underbrush, hints of hot iron, and slight greenish spice that rises up to tingle the nose. On the palate it's ample, with brighter cherry plum fruit than I might have expected, supported by plum acidity and moderately intense slightly greenish tannins that flow into a clean sour plum finish. Oddly enough, the tannic structure is almost too smooth for a Dolcetto. The fruit is also fairly overripe, and this makes it smoother and softer than one might expect a Dolcetto to be. This said, if you like the style it will drink well with drier meats.

Nice balance, and invigorating. On the palate it's medium bodied, with a bit less fruit than I might have expected; the body is mostly mineral, with oak leaf bitterness as well that continues into a fairly quick finish. Impenetrable pyrope ink. One would expect a heady bouquet given the color, but it is instead oddly muted, with hints of white glue that gradually open to reveal rather feeble red berry fruit with bitter overtones that gain in intensity with time. The palate is a bit richer, with moderately intense cherry fruit supported by some mineral acidity, and by ample tannins that have a distinctly greenish bitter burr to them and flow into a greenish tannic finish. It plods in an angry way, rather than step gracefully, and because of the tannins will drink best with fattier foods or rich stews that profit from a wine that clears the palate between bites. Pretty label. The wine is impenetrable pyrope ruby with cherry ruby rim. The bouquet is eye-opening; it's quite intense and also quite medicinal, with a mixture of berry fruit and quinine that brings a Barolo chinato (an old-style cordial made by flavoring Barolo with sugar, quinine, and spices; it can be very good, but is an after dinner drink) to mind. It's unusual for a Dolcetto both because of its size and because of the aromas; if you like this sort of exotic registry, you may find it interesting but it is atypical. On the palate it's ample and very soft, with dull sweetish plum fruit that gains direction from moderate plum acidity, and is supported by ample tannins that are as well polished as a banister people slide down. The effect is a bit disconcerting considering that one of Dolcetto's hallmarks is tannins that have a bite to them, but if you like big soft smooth overripe wines you will enjoy it. Drink it with drier meats that will benefit from its richness.

Impenetrable pigeon blood ruby with dusky cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, but lacking in fruit; there's quite a bit of alcohol, and some cedar, with underbrush as well. On the palate it's full, with bright cherry plum fruit one wouldn't have expected from the nose, supported by moderate plum acidity and tannins that are quite smooth, and flow into a clean slightly greenish finish. It's quite polished, but I'd have liked more continuity between nose and palate and greater freshness; the alcohol overshadows everything else.

On the palate it's full, with rich red berry fruit supported by clean sour cherry acidity, and by tannins that are tightly woven, and have greenish bitter accents that flow into a clean tannic savory finish. On the palate it's ample, smooth, and soft, with ample cherry plum fruit that gains direction from some acidity, and is supported by smooth soft tannins that do have a peppery tang, especially in the finish. It's a big wine, and to be frank I'd have liked it a bit tighter; it is instead opulent but in a loose sort of way. If you like big soft wines, however, you will enjoy it, because it does have a certain verve and the spiciness of the tannins does keep it on its toes; it will drink well with drier roasts along the lines of roast beef cooked medium, or white meats.

It's bigger and softer than I would expect a Dolcetto to be, and because of its softness will drink best with drier meats, be they well done or white. It feels like it's trying too hard to be a Wine, rather than a wine.

The bouquet is fairly intense, with plum cherry fruit supported by underbrush and some balsamic accents that gain depth from mentholated overtones and greenish spice; as it oxygenates the fruit becomes fresher, shifting some towards berry fruit from plum. On the palate it's full and soft, with ample cherry plum fruit supported by clean smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean tannic finish. It's overripe after the fashion of most of the 2005 Doglianis, but has greater control and depth than most, and is also a little less overripe; the fruit, though plum, has some berry fruit accents, and feels fresher. Because of its smooth softness it will work well with drier meats, and will be a good choice if you like this ample soft fruit driven style. As was the case with Aldo Marenco's wine, however, the 1997 Bricco Botti I tasted a few years ago was harvested much less ripe than this, and therefore the fruit register was more towards berry fruit than plum, and when I tasted it I remember finding it much more interesting than I am finding this now.

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC 2006
Lot 7A144
Deep pigeon blood ruby with cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly alcoholic, with berry fruit and some spice mingled with hints of underbrush, but not much in the way of floral accents. It feels tired. On the palate it's ample and smooth, with moderately intense cherry plum fruit supported by alcohol, slight acidity, and tannins that are surprisingly smooth for a Dolcetto, though Dogliani seems to have quite a bit of this. I found it overmuch and over soft; because of its softness it will drink well with drier meats, but I found myself wishing for more backbone and verve.

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Vigna Tecc Dogliani DOCG 2005
Impenetrable pyrope ink. The bouquet is moderately intense, with plum fruit supported by alcohol that confers a degree of sweetness, and by smooth spicy accents; there's not much floral here. On the palate it's big, smooth and soft, with ample plum fruit supported by moderate plum acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean plum laced finish that is kept from settling by the acidity, which also takes on some dry greenish tannic accents as well. It's big, and soft, and if you like this rather overripe style it will go well with drier roasts or pot roasts, but you have to like the style.

Poderi Luigi Einaudi I Filari Dogliani DOCG 2005
Impenetrable poured pyrope ink. The bouquet is closed, though with swishing some India ink bitterness mingled with slight plum fruit emerges, with underlying spice. On the palate it's ample and soft with moderately intense plum fruit that gains slight direction from moderate plum acidity -- there was more in some Dogliani -- supported by tannins that have fairly pronounced bitter accents that expand in the finish, which is decidedly bitter. Because of these tannic accents it will work better to balance the sauces one might serve with drier meats, though it is still a wine you should only consider if you like soft overripe wines. If you prefer more verve, it won't work for you.

Romana Carlo Rumanot Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC 2006
Lot 07/185
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is muted, with some alcohol and plum fruit supported by slight greenish spice. On the palate it's ample, with brighter cherry fruit than I might have expected from the nose, which gains direction from moderate acidity and is supported by decidedly astringent tannins that flow into a dry tannic finish with some peppery overtones. I'd have liked more depth, and greater richness of fruit to match the tannic structure, which finds itself doing more than it should and therefore comes across as a bit strident.

Romana Carlo Surì Vinsant Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC 2006
Lot 07/103
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is a bit overripe, with jammy plum cherry fruit supported by some metallic notes and considerable alcohol with slight greenish accents as well, mingled with spice as it opens, while the overall impression is also fairly sweet at the outset; as it oxygenates tart berry fruit acidity also emerges. On the palate it's ample, with brighter cherry fruit than I expected from the nose, supported by clean sour berry fruit acidity, and by ample smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean sour berry fruit finish. It's more interesting on the palate than the nose, and because of the brightness of the fruit will work well with grilled meats or light stews, and I found it growing on me.

Romana Carlo Brich Dij Nor Dogliani DOCG 2005
Lot 06/304
Deep pigeon blood ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly intense, in a rather medicinal key with balsamic notes at the outset; as it oxygenates cherry plum fruit emerges, gaining definition from moderate berry fruit acidity and some underbrush. On the palate it's brighter than I might have expected from the initial nose, with fairly lively cherry fruit supported by lively cherry acidity and by tannins that have a slight greenish burr and flow into a clean rather sour finish with tannic underpinning. It's pleasant enough, displaying greater freshness than most of the Dogliani wines, and is one of the few I might think to serve with succulent grilled or roasted red meats. It's not something to set aside, but will be nice now.

San Fereolo Valdibà Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC 2006
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is moderately intense, with cherry plum fruit supported by some greenish accents and some gum Arabic. Fairly direct. On the palate it's full, and fairly soft, with ample plum cherry fruit supported by clean plum acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean plum fruit finish. It's big, fruit driven, and a bit overripe for my taste, but if you like this style it will drink well with drier meats, along the lines of roast beef cooked medium, or roasted white meats.

San Fereolo San Fereolo Dolcetto di Dogliani Superiore DOC 2004
Impenetrable black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is fairly rich, with warm balsamic notes mingled with acidity and a fair amount of alcohol, with underlying cherry and plum fruit. On the palate it's fairly bright, with cherry plum fruit supported by fairly intense cherry plum acidity and by decidedly bitter tannins that lay a graphite shaving trail over the tongue and flow into a distinctly bitter finish. As it oxygenates the balsamic notes fade, while berry fruit with slight greenish almond accents comes more to the fore. In other words, it will benefit from decanting, and in terms of accompaniments will drink nicely with succulent red meats off the grill or light stews, and you may find yourself wanting a second bottle.

San Fereolo San Fereolo Dogliani DOCG 2005
Poured pyrope ink one could use to fill an ink well with. The bouquet is fairly intense, with cherry plum fruit supported by underbrush and some wood smoke, and some greenish accents as well. On the palate it's full and quite soft, with ample plum fruit that gains direction from delicate sour plum acidity, and is supported by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a dusky, unexpectedly tongue-drying tannic finish; though harvesting overripe grapes to obtain the desired polyphenolic ripeness has cut the acidity back substantially, Dolcetto's tannins still do emerge, more than in many of the other Dogliani wines, and I can't help but think of this as positive, though I'd have liked greater freshness overall. In terms of accompaniments, drier meats served with sauces or gravies.

Sicca Giovanni Vigneto San Giorgio Dolcetto di Dogliani DOC 2006
Lot 7130
Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and almandine rim. The bouquet is a bit on the wild side, with warm balsamic acidity and sea salt mingled with some underlying berry fruit and alcohol. On the palate it's fairly rich, with bright sour cherry fruit supported by clean sour berry fruit acidity and by tannins that are smooth, though they do have some astringent accents, and it all flows into a clean fairly bitter tannic finish. With more oxygenation, the wine opens, displaying elegant tart cherry fruit laced with some greenish accents and pleasant underlying spice. In other words, it's a wine that will benefit from decanting, and will drink well with succulent grilled meats or light stews.
